You are correcto, Linux violates a chillion Microsoft patents.
/. - ubersolid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15FAQ: win32codecs + libdvdcss2 from synaptic
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Not really surprising it overtook Ubuntu on the week of it's release. Same happened with SUSE. Good distro but Ubuntu will remain strongest in the mid term future. It's good to see that things aren't one dimensional though especially that PCLinuxOS is everything Ubuntu isn't while being everything it is (i.e. it's easy to use but it uses RPMs and KDE as default).
- thedarb, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17My favorite distro.
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14It beats all other distros in terms of DistroWatch ranks...
"The fact that PCLinuxOS is rising in popularity is likely a reflection of its quality and growing user base, not of a foul play."

- SteveMax, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9mooninite, by your logic Fedora would be "just a repackaged Red Hat", not an original distro (since you said Mandriva is "repackaged Mandrake", when we know it's just a name change after Mandrake and Conectiva merged).
- shethinkmefunny, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10PCLOS 2007 TR4 was the distro that converted me to Linux. In turn, I showed it to a few friends and converted them (at their request) to Linux.
IMHO, it's superior to *buntu - it's easier to install, easier to add hardware to, and just a more refined, more complete distro in general. - eclectro, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11There needs to be a FAQ on adding the DVD playbackr/win codecs for n00bs
- longboarder543, on 10/11/2007, -11/+18but, it can't be... bittorrent is only used for illegal file sharing
- Justathought, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6A lot of people are scared of RPM based distros because of bad experiences with some package managers that had a lot of bugs (I won't mention names, but you know which ones I'm talking about). But, one of the great qualities of PCLinuxOS is that it uses apt/Synaptic for package management. I had always heard that RPM was just as good as DEB as a package, but only until I tried PCLOS did I believe it. I have been using PCLOS for about 1 year now, and I have had no package management troubles at all. So, don't be discouraged about the RPM thing.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7update: pclinuxos is very slick. currently installing on my vmware machine, but from what i saw on the livecd it looks really nice.
- thtroyer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6You can't base everything from first experiences. My first experience with Gentoo was not very positive, but I've come to respect it as a rather nice distro once I got to learn it and continue to work with it.
I've stuck with Ubuntu as my primary OS, mostly because it works so well for me. There is no 'one size fits all' distro or OS, so find something that works _for you_ and try not to carelessly bash what works for others. - sam991, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6My distro of choice and with good reason. I've been playing around with Ubuntu today and it's just AWFUL compared to PCLOS. For me at least, PCLOS does everything out-of-the-box that Ubuntu doesn't. Like being able to connect to my Windows network shares through Samba. Like being able to set it up as a webserver in about 15 minutes flat.

- SteveMax, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5And Mandriva is a "renamed" (not "repackaged") Mandrake. If you see Mandriva as a "repackage" of Mandrake, using the same logic, Fedora would be a "repackage" of Red Hat. It's the exact same situation.
- TSSaloic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It is FLOSS software so it is legal.
- Runcis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Nice distro, I am already of PLOS 2007 final and seems its more better than Ubuntu. Textar, tanks!
- icu_, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I have jumped around to many different distros and PCLOS truly deserves some much-deserved props. A well-polished and easy to use distro on par with the *buntos imo. As far as I'm concerned the major things I look for in a distro is basic philosophy, package availability and the strength of the community. I think the community part is probably the most important to me and Ubuntu has a great community, but PCLOS's is fantastic as well (perhaps better?). Good stuff - can't wait - my laptop has been happy with TR4 so far, but it's going to be very happy when I get home.
- Justathought, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Mepis is cool. If you like it use it. It has some advantages, such as having the huge ubuntu/debian repositories. On the other hand, PCLinuxOS has more up to date packages, and mostly all the good ones.
- IamKaine, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Use Bugmenot.com It gives you a user name and password so you don't have to register.
- nadcraker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2thanks so much.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6gonna download and load it on vmware to see what's it like.
- Justathought, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You could have made a more intelligent comment by replying to the thread I started above, and by explaining why you think I'm wrong.

- SwabTheDeck, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Worst. Distro name. Ever. You'd almost be better off calling it ComputerKernelSoftware2K7. It may be a good distro, but the name needs some work.
- eclectro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I agree. It makes Bill Gates richer.
- superyounan1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4theres room for both. I probably wont be using either exclusively any time soon... although my windows partitions are collecting dust :)
- renegadeafk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Damnit I just got ubuntu installed and running and now this comes along and from what I've seen it's superior.
- nadcraker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Can anyone offer up a direct download? My ISP blocks BitTorrent traffic. And before you start in, they're the only high speed ISP I can get...trust me. :-(
- TSSaloic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Try it again, at least on LiveCD.
- Justathought, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3It doesn't have the poetry and wit of a name like Ubuntu, but it has its own charm to it. I hear in Texas a lot of dogs are named "Dog". Maybe that is why Texstar liked PCLinuxOS as the name for his distro.
- phervers, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Well that's weird i was able to set up web server in ubuntu in about 15 minutes with no problems at all, and i'm mostly windows boy so i don't think you have a valid point here
- Justathought, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Oh, and for those that won't try Linux because of Photoshop, you can now run virtually any version of Photoshop in PCLinuxOS. See here:

Great job guys. - renegadeafk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Ubuntu just got dumped on it's ass from my pc, this distro is amazing.
- priegog, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Link to the torrent.... the site is starting to be a little slow...

I don't know if it's legal, but somebody better grab it and mirror it before it's too late... - subigo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I gave it a shot, didn't like it, found Mepis, never left.
- Waterrat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1 While I do take Distrowatche's ranking system with a jumbo-sized grain of salt,it pleases me greatly to see PCLinux at number one for so long.
If you want the disk, you can get it here for $2.99. A whopping good deal for a complete OS.

- MacintoshSauce, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Under Parallels for Mac, all that comes up when booting the Live CD is "boot:". That's it, that's all.
I have been quite patient with these problems since the TR2 release, but I can no longer tolerate this release's problems with virtual environments. Why TR1 worked and then TR2 > do not, is beyond me. - Justathought, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@macintoshsauce
This mac user seems to disagree with you:
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-345007.html - phervers, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Virtually any version ??? How about CS3 ?? Wine can't handle it ... yet (hopefully)
- aesir_loki, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I got to agree with stevemax on this, mooninite your an idiot.

- theralfinator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah, PClos does all those things. For added codecs, I'm sure you can just use the search button in Synaptic to find codecs, but I haven't had to yet and I've had no problems playing things. I should also add that installing the drivers for a nVidia geforce FX 5200 was as easy as installing the nVidia package via synaptic. It is an awesome distro!
- Justathought, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It works well in VMware on a PC. Maybe the fault for your problems lies somewhere other than with PCLOS?
- theralfinator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@sk545
I've been able to solve countless Linux problems just by googling and searching forums. (without actually posting). Sometimes though, even then I'll post what I did to solve my problem to make it that much easier for the next guy. - AhronZombi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2ubuntu debian and this distro are bad ideas, the package systems are hell. as a ex debian / ubuntu user i have to say id advise arch its far more stable and far faster
