- LemonHerb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16In other news new every PC in the world is capable of running Linux, Bill gates was unavailable for comment, reportedly swimming in his money bin.
- ek3s, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Why wouldn't it run Linux?
- Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Cut your processor in half then prove it runs linux.
I dare ya. - Cander, on 10/12/2007, -11/+24I bet he doesnt care.
- RobLoach, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I don't see the different between the Origami Project and a Tablett PC. It seems like they're just repackaging something that's already out and then putting it on the market. Of course Linux would work with it....
- hexix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I bet it makes him happy. Some idiot buys a UMPC which would include the licensing costs of windows only to put linux on it. Now not only does Microsoft not have to worry about spending money supporting this user's operating system, but they've already got the money from them.
Really a win for Microsoft. - dfekke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You can run Linux on anything. A golf cart I used last year was running Linux.
- MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11XBox 360 doesn't run Linux (yet).

http://www.generation-nt.com/images/biblio/art_optimisation-windows-xp/000000017015.jpg - mhadk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The image of the black Samsung device running Linux is a fake. It is the exact same image as this one, but with a Linux screenshot pasted on top and sharpened a little: http://www.generation-nt.com/images/biblio/art_optimisation-windows-xp/000000017015.jpg
If the link dies, just do a search for samsung umpc at images.google.com. - SilentBobSC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Christ quit posting to your blogs people, Wordpress won't handle the traffic, just post a coralized link or... and I know this is asking too much, but how about posting to the ORIGINAL article?
SB - Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Hmmm... perhaps this is a challenge for the NetBSD team!
- n8han, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6And for people who want to run Linux at the same screen resolution on hardware that's smaller, lighter, cheaper, and already available, there's always the 770.
http://www.nokia.com/770 - ryduh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I bet your mom can't run linux
- zephyrxero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There's alot of comments on here asking what the big deal is, and that's the fact that the Origami was hyped/marketed as a Microsoft product for so long. Of course, now it turns out that the Origami was just a overgrown pocket PC/tablet PC type device. No big deal? Agreed. But, since it's been drove into people's heads for months that it was a Microsoft product, and now it's running Linux....it is a little ironic/funny/interesting with the circumstances.
PS. Doesn't the Origami look a hell of a lot like the Linux handheld Nokia released quite a few months back? ;) - sosuke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ToddFFW
The xbox360 isnt a regular PC at all, the xbox was a regular PC
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox360 for some basic info
yes i know linux can run on powerpc, but its still no where near a "regular PC" like the xbox was - caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I don't see why it wouldn't. This thing is like a laptop with the screen fused to it.
- Ozmotear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Find something that can't run linux.
- furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6WOW!!!
Imaging a world where Linux runs on a computer...the future is almost here!
get over it. every time some bored nerd puts linux on _A COMPUTER_ it is not front page worthy news. - TheD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3someday websites will be able to handle more that 10 people going to a site at once...someday.
- claco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In reverse, surprising things do run linux...
This plasma TV [media receiver] runs Linux...and OpenSSL...

There's a copy of the GPL in the manual. - xt0ph3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes. Fine squatting you're doing there.
- jonashwing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4sites down. lame WordPress error again
- jmacdonagh, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7This is nothing special. It's a regular PC. You can put any OS you want on it.
- Klowner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Way to go, ass. Squatting domain names that open source projects may be interested in isn't going to get you money or coolness points.
- Firethorne, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The latest Ubuntu LiveCD thought I was clicking every time I moved the cursor with my touchpad on my laptop. I would imagine the touchscreen would also need some tweaking to behave correctly.
- mutant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2People need to post coralized links for little blog sites.
- bluehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't see why he would care. More than likely you won't be able to buy one of these without XP installed on it already so he's already made his money off of it. What you do with it after you buy it is your business. Just to clarify... I am a hardcode windows fan and I think this is pretty cool
- Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The big deal is that UMPC are just that. Having had a Palm Tungsten C and several Pocket PC's over the past few years the major shortcoming of the PDA was it's inability to run the actual software you use on your desktop.
The "Big Deal" about UMPC in general is that it run x86 based code. That means you don't need to hunt for weird crippled half assed overpriced software to get close to the fuctionality of your deasktop PC.
The "Big Deal" about it running linux is that we may get the crucial touchscreen drivers for Linux when this thing ships instead of when it's 99% obsolete. That means we may be able to knock $150 off the price tag and if some company has the vision to offer a Linux based, or NO-OS model.
I'm really suprised that one of the ultra low power X86 competitors like AMD or VIA with nano bga2 form foactor haven't made a pentium 1 or 2 class processor that is suitable for a PDA application.
It would be a great way to get some life out of those old chip designs as well. - kuito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2as long as it's sold with windows vista.. I doubt MS cares about anything else.
- apollo13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2is it so great that linux "runs' on a computer? give me a break so called "nerds". linux runs even on your toilet flush tank if it contains a computer.
and where the hell UMPCs are available in market now? - ToeCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My Sony XBR960 34" Tube TV runs Linux! The GPL is on the manual! LOL!
- bysin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Speak for yourself. Anything involving linux is news worthy.
- jcraveiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.umpcorigami.com/news/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=4
But... am I the only one to whom that image just doesn't seem right? - JinkyHinge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here is a copy of the image (def photochopped) as displayed in the article
http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/6983/linuxgami4hr.jpg - Loannes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Are these origami devices simply glorified small tablets with no flip functionality or what? I don't see the necessity here.
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not so much ... I've come across a lot of wordpress blog diggs that are all down due to the effect ... it just kills 'em
- infectedRoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can the Digg programmers make a link checker to make sure that if the linked story is on wordpress that it will be automatically deleted?
- veritech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow an x86 pc runs linux! i wonder what cool thing's they will come up with next
- frontpage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thanks for this
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1agreed, save the $700usd and get a 770 from Nokia.
- ToeCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because they were partially successful at locking down the MSN Companion. I got stuck with a version that wasn't hackable.
- gobabushka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's great!!!! But one problem: The site is down. Probably has something to do with all the traffic from digg.
- ware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.oqo.com is better :X
- nexus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Reported as Lame. This is a normal computer folks. Of course it can run linux. In fact it runs it more easily than xp runs on a intel mac.
- evildorko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1New story: My toaster runs linux! Tune in later for choppy video proof that I'll upload to YouTube!!
- apache2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4agreed, I'll bet he could care less
- Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4First, who cares? I mean, really... every bloody computer can run Linux.
Second, Bill Gates runs one of the most successful companies on Earth. He doesn't give a fig if a few "l33t haxors" install Linux on UMPCs.
Third, why the hell is this on the front page? Is anyone surprised? A far bigger story would be if Linux COULDN'T run on a UMPC. - cypherz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm thinking its been photoshopped err gimped.
