- RHamel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The story wasn't about replacing Windows applications, but about replacing Mainframe applications, namely the MVS/TPF fares system at what was formerly Galileo International. The Fare's database used to be loaded with the posted ATPCO fares then manipulated through CICS and process further with batch jobs running on MVS, and finally loaded into the TPF system 3 times a day. The new system can update fares in real time which is the chief advantage, or as we liked to joke about it, the data entry people will be able to put mistakes in a lot faster now. The only real connection this story has to Orbitz is that Cendant acquired Orbitz and put Micky Lutz in charge of it too.
- cool4u2view, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jesusphreak your points are no longer valid with recent developements ... installing a quality distro of linux is easier than windows and emulation of an application can run at full speed if done correctly and depending on what the application does.
- hypeiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i love that maddox page but i think orbitz kind of pwned him with that reply letter... he kind of bent the truth a little
- onefish2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe you see Linux up against Windows on the desktop but almost never on the server side.
Most people switch from Unix to Linux because its fairly straight forward to port applications from Unix to Linux. It is difficult to port apps to or from Windows to Unix or Linux. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Orbitz blows either way....
- nxtw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, I really screwed up that last sentence
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, but Wine is making HUGE strides these days. It really is just becoming a matter of time.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Still waiting for wine to support Windows XP apps... been waiting for what four years...
- nxtw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, but we, the Internet community, doesn't like Orbitz: http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=orbitz_blows
- LoDown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, contrary to the submitter, by and large the enterprise use of Linux is for servers (directly competing with UNIX). I would be much more impressed if the CIO had migrated all their desktops to Linux...but I guess that kinda thing is still a while off...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Linux is a Unix OS.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jesusphreak, Wine Is Not an Emulator. Wine is a Linux port of the Windows APIs. Apps running with WINE will run at native speed.
- mido321, on 04/20/2009, -1/+0wow, I really screwed up that last sentence

Don't kid yourself.
1) Emulation will ALWAYS be slower than an actual program.
2) It is still very difficult to easily install a quality distro of Linux.
Linux will never (at least not in the next 10-15 years) take over even a sizable majority of the desktop realm from Windows.
