- Gryffydd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Yeah, but so does your mom, but ATI can't take its teeth out.
- jonnyeh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8The driver is open-source, there is no catch. If there was, people would find out and the internet would catch on fire.
The 'Novell == MS' link is overstated. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5What the hell standards are you talking about? Clearly you havent touched a linux box. If you had, you would find that almost everything works seamlessly together. Sure there is no standardized package manager, but whats the big deal with that? At least when i am at home on my linux box i am not bound to the confines of partially working, "standardized" proprietary software.
- Dilz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Nvidia and DAMMIT linux driver news on the same day? Eggsalad!
Perhaps all the attention paid by Dell and the like is finally producing results.
(stress 'egg' and slur 'salad' - you'll get it) - achoi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3stress 'egg' = boiled egg?
slur 'salad' = tossed salad = eating ass?
Eggsalad = the act of eating out ass like a boiled egg? I don't get it. - Rapax, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Do they have one out yet for the Mobility X series, specifically the X1400?
- syuusuke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3anybody know when the drivers for 200m come out?
- straxus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"Oh Christ, you mean Linux doesnt even have its drivers unified between flavors and there are different packages for different flavors?"
There is one driver. If one wants to, they can compile and install the driver themselves. The benefit packaging adds is hard to explain to someone who hasn't used Linux. Package Management systems track dependencies, and add version control. The entire process can be automated to the point that downloading and installing new versions is handled through daily updates. In English, imagine if Windows Update were able to keep every piece of software on your system up-to-date for you. That's only one reason why many Linux users prefer to stick with software and drivers packaged for the distribution they use.
Beyond that, there's the issue of dependences. If you install through a package manager, it will track down and offer to install the dependences you need to run the software. In the Windows world, this would be similar to offering to grap .NET, DirectX, or GTK+ automatically - rather than sending the user to the website to download and install it themselves.
It's not a cluster ***** at all. But it is a very *very* different way of doing things. - sajb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Give them a couple of months and try again..
- monikerd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Right now the opensource driver isn't too hip yet. But I'm confident in the developers. Amd still has to release the really juicy specs which will allow for an opensource 3d accelerated on a dedicated gpu driver. That's when I'll start digging this :)
Right now It isn't that more functional then the existing open source avivo driver.
Avivo works for my x1400 haven't spent time trying to get the new one running. I'm sure they can use your help though so try it and report back to their mailinglist/bugtrack/...
The code for this driver appears to be pretty :) - AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2packages just make the install easier. Go download the source if you don't want to wait for the package
- joeljkp, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Good news everyone, congrats.
- teknomunk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Excellent!
- c0ldfusi0n, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Nice to see these start popping up.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1English is good.
- Izacus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well, maybe you should try looking for it. Either download the official one from the manufacturers page or use a modder to mod the ones for desktop computers.
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, there is no "equivalence relationship". If that's an equivalence relationship then I must be Elvis by your logic.
openSUSE is _sponsored_ by Novell, and Novell made a _business_ deal on interoperability (and patent protection for _customers_). Novell and openSUSE are contributing more to the Linux _desktop_ than anyone right now, and this is just one of the examples. Relax :-) - abohling, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have tried all of those things, nothing worked at this point. I am waiting limbo because neither side, ATI or the OEM, is willing to provide a driver until the other one does. I could not get the mod program to work but at this point I'd rather just not run Vista. (This is for work, not a personal usage situation though.)
- stmiller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1no 9600 yet
- Daniel15, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Does this include the Radeon Mobility X1400?
- apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1So let me get this straight... Microsoft is selling SUSE Linux Enterprise coupons out to get people to use Windows? Right...
Also, just so that I'm understanding you correctly here: Novell is pushing for Linux on the desktop more than any other company in the world... to get people to use Windows? Ahem. So tell me, how did you figure this one out?
http://opensuse.org/FAQ:Novell-MS - achoi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1funny thing about open source: if it sucks 1) nobody will use it, and 2) someone will make it better.
what's the point of that comment anyway? Was it an underhanded comment to insult AMD? It reeks of fanboy, but no reference has been made to Nvidia, so we're forced to dismiss it. - apokryphos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1See: AMD Backs openSUSE with Huge New Infrastructure ( http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/08/10/0044231&from=rss )
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Somebody who gets it........Shocker
- Megatog615, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1No, the whole point is to get Linux users to go back to Microsoft products.
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Digg this man up. Novell != Microsoft. They only agreed to coexist and not sue each other's customers. They are also working on making Linux and Windows more interoperable. This will FACILITATE the ability to switch to Linux for some users who collaborate with mostly windows users
- abohling, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I really wish there was a Mobility X driver that worked in Vista - so far that's a no go for me.
- tian2992, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0have you noticed this? http://www.opensuse.org/, has a AMD logo down there...
- Dilz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Nothing gets by you, achoi! If you knew what the words "stress" or "slur" meant, you couldn't possibly come up with a solution other than...
Egg-salad = Excellent - DriversPlaza, on 01/07/2009, -0/+0More Drivers @ http://www.techlookz.com/driver-downloads/
- tian2992, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0why are both digged down?
Well at least AMD is doing something against Intel... - boza111, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Hey Does this work with Radeon 9600 .. Also does it support compiz fusion ??? I would really really appreciate if someone could help me out with this . As the ubuntu open source ati drivers dont seem to use my radeons capacity at all... if it doesnt work for 9600 are there any other "good" drivers
- LinuxKitty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0This is good news. The previous ATI drivers just weren't all that hot and one of Linux's weaknesses. Happy to see that things are about to change, especially as an ATI card owner. Now next we need are more commercial games. ;)
- archer75, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Linux can't agree on anything. Everyone has to do it their own way with no real standards between distros. Therein lies it's greatest weakness.
- mbradbury, on 10/10/2007, -10/+4openSUSE == SUSE == Novell == microsoft; I hope that there is no catch
- pcpimpster, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1"Packages are currently available for openSUSE, SLED, Fedora and Mandriva. Packages for Ubuntu and Debian will also be coming soon."
Oh Christ, you mean Linux doesnt even have its drivers unified between flavors and there are different packages for different flavors?
Sounds like a cluster ***** that has already happened. Keep it up boys. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -10/+0Will Envy be able to get these automatically for me?
http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -12/+0Starting from a new slate is good and all, but if AMD is involved, could that not result in it also sucking? Hopefully those developers have some brains and arent looking to the old driver for reference
- poonaka, on 10/10/2007, -16/+1ATI sucks

What is Digg?
