- DrScott, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39Free Beer isn't free as in free beer, Free Beer is free as in free speech. Ironic.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31It's free as in "Free speech" (e.g. free to modify). Freedom is something money can't buy. ;-)
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23"In an attempt to dominate the market, Microsoft came out with their own beer.
....Analysts say it tastes like ***** and is riddled with bugs.
Microsoft isn't releasing the recipe." - dtd00d, on 10/12/2007, -18/+37...For everything else there's Mastercard.
- Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Free as in beer, slurred as in speech.
- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13This is obviously in response to the open source cola, but it's one of the most well known open source products and has been dugg a few times since years ago.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Thats kinda why they started the project. They did it for the lulz.
- Dominatus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Recipes can't be copyright, therefore they can't be GPL'd....
I'm pretty sure once they release the recipe to the wild, people can do anything they want with it, because it can't be copyright. Therefore they can't place the requirement that modifications get released back to the wild. Companies protect their recipes by just keeping them a secret, not with copyright. - TheWestExit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Rules and processes can not be copyrighted, that is one of the debate over software copyrights.
- erkokite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Apparently this was previously Vores Øl, for those who have heard of it. I believe it is also caffeinated with Gurana beens.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5How so?
- goodbeershow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There are tons of in-depth beer recipes for homebrewers on the web. I'll pass on this, thank you.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Actually, the other times this has been dugg, I think the beer it linked to was Vores Ol (or some slight variation in spelling, I can't quite remember). This seems to be a completely new piece of FLOSS^HB.
- etjrowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3But as anyone who homebrews knows, the value of REAL beer far outweighs the monetary difference. This really is nothing new though. Hombrewers have always shared recipes and practice free and open brewing. All they have done is relate it to the free and open source software movement.
But hey, anything that turns people on to REAL beer is ok in my book. Especially if those people are fellow geeks. - dragazis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For those Mac users interested in this I personally recommend Beer Alchemy ( http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/20161 ) or there is also Homebrew Formulator ( http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/20249 )
- debtman7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What I find funny about this is that beer, at least quality microbrews, usually has only 4 ingredients. Barley, Water, Hops, Yeast. Many microbrews also post complete specs on their website as well, with information on bitterness, gravity, alchol content, hops used, grains used, etc. I've cloned many of my favorite commercial microbrews by just using those specs to get the correct proportions of ingredients. You really don't need a detailed recipe...
Even more so, you can't really duplicate a large scale commercial process as a homebrewer, so having the recipe may get you close, but it will never be the exact same beer. There are just too many variables... - djtripp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This "open source" beer is really getting to me. As a homebrewer for a few years, you come to find a lot homebrew recipes amongst your local homebrew club, website, etc. I know of no one actually selling recipies, and if there is a brew made my a major craft brewery, someone has experimented and tried to clone it.
I really don't want to go check out some lame ass beer someone is making, and rather design my own, or brew a friends recipe that kicks ass. And more importantly, improve on something that already exits. And by improve, I mean make it better to MY taste. Since that is what ultimately matters. If you are interested in homebrewing, find a local club, try a recipe, and enjoy it. I've been told my beers are pretty good, but there are so many recipies out there that are fantastic. If you want try my beers, check out my profile for my site. It contains free recipes to some of my favorite recipes I've created. Ask me a question, I'll see what I can do. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Lots of caffeine + lots of alcohol= low-grade speedball
- doctechnical, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Alas, the "open recipe" they provide is, from a homebrewer's point of view, incomplete. They don't mention what yeast they use, and as yeast can have a profound effect on the end product, this is incomplete. As their website says, "If this were source code, it would not compile".
- doctechnical, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Whoops - my bad. The recipe at freebeer.org does indeed get into specifics. I was looking at an older version ;)
"Nevermind" - signal15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Mmm, replace the NB hops with about .5 oz of Magnum, toss some Centennial in around 30 min, replace the Williamette with Simcoe, and use some Rogue Pacman for the yeast. I would omit the guarana. The grain bill definitely looks interesting though.
- christianjul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2djtripp: you're right, I am also a homebrewer. Beer recipes has always been freely available, and often you can even go to the breweries and by the malt and hops. The difference however is that Free Beer also has the brand and the artwork CC-licensed, and it is meant as a comment to commercialism and the way our economy works. Btw: the project is made by danish artist group Superflex. Together with students of ITU, but the idea and concept is of Superflex (I am not only homwbrewing, also danish)
dacheetah: you would be surprised! If you really like beer as in Belgian Ale, Czech Lager or Bavarian Weizen you are going to love homebrewed beer. If you prefer that industrial crap Carlsberg and the likes have made dominant, probably not. - Triene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...weird...
I'm involved with the Free Culture movement, so I'm used to hearing this as an explanatory phrase for Free Culture's definition: "Free Culture is not free as in beer culture..." and so on. - dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I think you'll find those insects are actually "features", not bugs.
It's also the most secure beer you you can buy, with a lid made from a patented titanium alloy. (But yes, the bottle is still made out of rather fragile glass) - clearzen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It wasn't so much about the recipe, it's more about the play on words/irony of it. At least that is why I dugg it.
- signal15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some of those recipes are WAY off.
- Troopy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2apt-get install qbrew
- dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What I want to see is a place with recipes for making beer that tastes as close as possible to a your (as in my) favourite commercial beer.
Although, making Pseudo-Guinness would be harder than most beers, since it's nitrogenated, which is what gives it such a smooth creamy head. (I could always try using Nitrogen oxide (Nitrous), see if I wind up with laughing-beer.) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg down for being misleading.
There is no beer recipe in that article. - pamon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1free beer... priceless
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WTF does this have to do with free beer?
- MattH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also Beer Captured
http://www.amazon.com/Beer-Captured-Tess-Szamatulski/dp/0970344252 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nah, caffeine and alcohol have no negative effects when mixed. You'll just be drunk and awake rather than having the drowsy feeling. Once the alcohol wears off you'll have a headache, but that happens no matter what if you're awake when it leaves the system.
It's not like you'll die from it or even come remotely close. - MattH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you want commercial beer style recipes look no further than the Clone Brews book.
http://www.amazon.com/Clone-Brews-Homebrew-Recipes-Commercial/dp/1580170773 - MattH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Brewtopia in Australia have had a open source business model for a few years now nothing new here
http://www.brewtopia.com.au/
But many posters are correct Home-brew is the only true open source beer . - UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1My roommate and I are considering brewing our own beer. Ah college days.
- fulldecent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Free as in cheap or free as in freedom?
- Switch625, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You'd get ***** all, then.
- crossers, on 02/25/2008, -0/+0This is an interesting commercial project. I recommend visiting http://www.emergencysoft.com and http://www.sooslic.com/?id=672
- Robotsu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"It's free as in "Free speech" (e.g. free to modify). Freedom is something money can't buy. ;-)"
No, but apparently it is something you can charge more for. - cantormath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ GawtMilk:
There are no words for this comment and It's like speech not beer. - crossers, on 07/03/2008, -0/+0never trouble until trouble troubles you!!!)))

http://www.chasr.org/ - tapupartforpres, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The Weeping Radish is the oldest brewery in North Carolina. They also sell beer online and also sell private beer labels for any occasion. There beer is the best.
http://www.weepingradish.com/ - Kaidun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Although it may be the most 'secure' beer, before Microsoft even came up with their recipe there were already millions of copies in China claiming to be the real MS Beer.
- djGentoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Still getting beer from Apt? Here at Slackware Breweries, we make great, completely free beer (we don't believe in beer with anything trademarked, even logos) that's so good, if you buy one bottle, you'll want a whole case- but each beer is sold separately! (In fact, you'll need a whole case to drink the first, for some bizarre reason.) And it tastes great- like... *glug*
Tar... - codyman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I think i'll stick to pacifico / corona / the usual suspects...
- ojk007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1give it 3-5 years, and they'll have 4 different types available and incresing prices.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2the world needs way better iq tests, then everything should be judged by iq. the smarter the person the more everything they get.
- secondmode, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Honest-to-god? Typo I'm guessing?
