- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+84And piss on ATI for not providing drivers worth a ***** to be able to run it properly.
I'm going to buy an Nvidia card for this reason alone. You out there listening ATI?!!?? - MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -6/+66XGl is the coolest Open Source thing I've ever seen. Credit to David Reveman who worked on it initially, and all the guys that got involved when the source code was opened up!
- TeraByteTyrant, on 10/12/2007, -19/+63Windows is like an italian whore...
pretty, but unreliable and costs too much - hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35Yep, sounds about right. NVidia has been making great efforts to support OpenGL too. Anyways, my decision to run XGL alone was a big factor in deciding which notebook to buy. Got a NVidia 7900.
- DoctorWhohaa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29There are encrypted file systems for linux.

- silenceHR, on 10/12/2007, -11/+32hmmmm.... untill first "zero day exploit" for Vista i guess
- ASUmusicMAN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Personal preference I guess, but my pretty Linux with xgl/compiz runs great on my dell laptop with integrated graphics. I shudder at the thought of aero performance with an integrated graphics card.
- Vektuz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Whats really lovely about XGL/Compiz is that not only do you get all the effects you need... (YOu even get a mac-like expose feature, and can even bind it to the corners of the screen), the package also comes with the ability to change any setting about it.
You can change what effects are present
You can change parameters of all the effects (how wobbly? How quickly the alpha changes? The bounciness. The sensitivity)
You can change the keys / mouse buttons bound to do the various things.
On top of all of that, a lot of the ones they bundle it with is not just eye candy, its damn useful.
For example, the zoom. Hold down windows key and right mouse button and it smoohtly zooms in. Roll the mouse wheel and it zooms more. Easy to read text / comics / whatever from far away, when on a high rez laptop screen or in poor lighting conditions
You can still pin windows to float on top, or on top of every desktop
you Can use corners of the screen or hotkeys to initiate the mac-osx-like espose feature.
You can rebind the keys any way you want, change delays, sensitivities...
All in a nice gui, too. Theres a gui that lets you tweak all of them. and it takes effect as you drag the sliders/check the boxes, no restart required - hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -14/+28What is this Vista you speak of. Last I heard was a SP3 coming out for XP with shiny buttons. Oh, prettier....shiny buttons....I get it.
- thelastknowngod, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18everyone has to be a noob sometimes. its honestly not as bad as you think.
- rushfan, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23@frontline, dude, linux is better than Windows but XGL has nothing to do with it. I hate it myself. Linux is stable and secure. No crashes or reformats? Thats productivity. You can also install it on old hardware without having to pay to upgrade.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17They said it's hard to install, but it really isn't.

Just do that. - skidzilla, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16You could try EncFS:
http://arg0.net/wiki/encfs - oshu, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19That video was making me insane. Just so everyone understands. Suse is a German company. It is pronounced "zoo-zah" or "soo-sah" but certainly not "soos," "sue's," or "suzi!" If you disagree, frankly you are wrong. I have spoken to the original developers about this.
- MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16'The fact that xgl does this could easily lead towards xgl becoming an impediment towards being used commonly in any workplace.'
You can still get the benefits of XGL (accelerated 3D, zoom, transparency, 3D desktop cube) without the wavy lines. Every effect can be turned on and off. Presumably each distro will have its own idea of what features should be enabled by default depending on their intended market, but you can always modify the settings to suit your taste. - balls187, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13And support from Hardware Manufacturers.
There are a number of devices that have linux support, but virtually *all* hardware supports windows.
I like linux, I like windows. I love women. - ericcc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I have an Mobility Radeon 9600 I got for 49$ at newegg. Runs XGL like a champ.
- playerx, on 10/12/2007, -12/+23Runs fine on ati, the latest drivers are even better than the ones by nvidia. Not biased, I have both and i can tell.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14"Bitlocker" is a joke compared to PROPER encryption available in EVERY Linux distribution since about 1999.
- CreepingDeath, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Actually having used both, I prefer the look of MY xgl/kde install with the exception of the rather basic window manager currently used by compiz. Once we can use the various other WM/themes in combination then all will be good ;) However keep in mind that both Xgl and Vista are in development, Xgl in alpha testing, and Vista in beta form.
Right now windows has two real big advantages over linux, legacy apps and DirectX games. Projects like wine and ... transgaming ... help that some, but until games are being published for all 3 platforms, and *nix stuff gets a little more mature windows will have an edge.. but thats it. Its been alot of years of nothing from MS in terms of operating systems, while the *nix folks have been constantly improving on their desktop environments. More hardware vendors are starting to consider linux as a viable alternative, and were starting to see software companies looking at osx, and to a lesser extent linux as targets too.
In terms of business apps this might lead to more being coded in C/C++, or built with more open frameworks like qt to make porting them across multiple platforms as easy as possible, in terms of games this is MS's nightmare because it will lead to game developers considering OpenGL over DirectX, or in conjunction with it (Ala Blizzard and WoW). I am not a game engine coder so I couldn't say which is better, but I've heard openGL is easier to code in and just as powerful as DX, but thats just nth party info. - morphie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10No, they are comparing the 3D-desktops window managers of Windows Vista and Xgl/Compiz. That's not apples and oranges, that's honest comparing. The outcome is subjective to the user, yes, but the comparison is just right. :)
- Criterion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9People who are not trained in any form of computer use would find either OS equally hard or easy. I mean, "Hello new user, this is the computer you're going to use. To get on the internet, click this icon. To write email, click this icon. To listen to music, click this icon." I mean, get real. A new user is not going to be doing an aweful lot of anything at first, and are capable of learning either system. It's when you have to UNlearn habits from other OS's that things get all snarled up in a gnarly ball.
- 0crabby0, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Subjective and long-winded video...
I don't do "pretty" for my computer...
Now if you'll excuse me - I have to change my Hello Kitty screen saver... - MartinB3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9If you're complaining that it takes too long to install Linux, I don't think you remember how long it takes to install Windows... Debian installs in under 10 minutes... Windows has to have "Estimated time remaining"....
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8My mom first used a computer a year ago. I installed Ubuntu Hoary for her and she is able to do all the things she wants. Everything I've taught her to do would have been the same on any OS: how to launch a program, use email, attach her digital camera, etc. There has yet to be anything that would have been easier for her in Windows or OS X.
Teaching a new computer user Linux is easier than getting someone to switch because people don't want to unlearn the Windows way of doing things even if that way is harder than the Linux way. - mikesol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Click the link on the side to skip right to it.
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13aero runs for ***** on my radeon 9800 pro/128 (which is given a 5.9 rating my the ms upgrade guide), fyi.
- MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10'Give me a pre-packaged double click and it's done binary please.'
There are pre-packaged XGL cds available (see my post above). Sorry though, no double click. It runs directly from the CD without any user interaction required.
In a year's time most distributions will probably come with XGL pre-installed. The reason why you don't get it now is because it is still alpha software and therefore buggy. Be patient and it will come. - MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9You don't actually need to install anything to see the effects. XGL runs fine from the Kororaa Live CD, if you just want to try it out. It's an easy way to test to see if your graphic card is capable of running it.
http://kororaa.org/static.php?page=static060318-181203
I believe there is a Suse Live DVD with XGL too, but I haven't tried it. - karamba_kid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Bitlocker? How can you actually like trusted computing?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm running openSUSE with Xgl/Compiz right now, the only problem I ha-Oooooooooh, look at the pretty waves!
- gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -10/+17Some of the old Windows Longhorn pre-alpha builds had similar transition effects (like waviness when a window is moved) but they were removed because user polls determined that they would affect usability and productivity. The fact that xgl does this could easily lead towards xgl becoming an impediment towards being used commonly in any workplace.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I've got Xgl running beautifully on Dapper Drake right now using an nVidia GeForce 5500 card. It's much more responsive than Metacity and I see no drop in system performance. I love Xgl.
- Liniment, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6They didn't even do a good job showing all the cool stuff that Xgl/Compiz can do. I like to have different movies running on each side of the cube. That impresses my friends....or at least it would if I had any.
- gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -13/+18see, now THAT's a good post. Now I'll consider it...
but seeing as to how I'm a total linux noob, I'll probably screw up a few times trying to get it right :P
edit: I love how the parent post (made by me) was rated down for being honest :P - iAlex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Nice show! Both Vista and Linux are good :)
- ditoa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If you are that concerned regarding your data why are you waiting until Q4 2006 when there is other drive encryption technology already available? TrueCrypt, while not offering transparent system drive encryption, has been out for ages and is totally free. If you need whole drive encryption for the system drive (which I doubt you do as you are waiting for Vista) I would recommend PGP Whole Disk Encryption. I have been using it for the past year or so on my laptops and it is a great product, albeit a little on the expensive side (however you get what you pay for and with encryption you most likely want the best).
As others have said Linux has offered technologies similar, ir not identical, to that of BitLocker for several years. OS X also offers FIleVault, while not whole drive, it is a good option if you don't want to pay or use a third party tool.
Personally I believe all security applications should be open source (OSS not meaning free) so I would not use BitLocker for this very reason. - cgranade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Not nessesarily. It could be (from the information you've given) be a Mono-based application.
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10New people? You're kidding me right? There are people that have never used a computer before that are going to find vista or any os easy? There's a reason they don't know how to use a computer yet.....
- Kazrog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I run OpenSUSE, Vista, and Mac OS X on a daily basis. I prefer Mac OS X hands down.
- bluering, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Funny thing about the ATI versus Nvidia for Linux. I dumped my beloved AMD Laptop with the 200M Radeon because it was quirky and slow running XGL. I picked up a Sony SZ110 with the Geforce Go 7400. The difference was night and day. I was always an ATI guy, but NVIDIA (so far) is just easier to get rolling.
FWIW I also hated all the crap that came with the VAIO windows install. Under SUSE 10.1 this is a very nice piece. - illt, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11that's my beef with linux. Shouldn't take all that to install something. Give me a pre-packaged double click and it's done binary please.
- bieber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You'd really trust a proprietary application, whose source neither you nor your peers could examine for possible security problems or even deliberate backdoors, with your data? Naive much?
- ibis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I use amarok to drive my ipod, and it does everything I want it to do. I think I heard that the windows version of itunes will run under wine, but I frickin' hate itunes, so I haven't tried it.
- Vektuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Multi-monitor support in most desktop linux distributions is sadly, way behind. Some dont even have any kind of graphical tool to even configure it, and just due to the architecture of X, you need to restart your X server whenever you change your monitor setup. This is being fixed in the next few reivisions, but until then, multi-monitor is playing a big catch-up game. This will become more of an issue, as more and more people buy laptops as their primary machine (its the trend), and have an extra monitor from their pc lying around.
- glyph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There seems to be a common misconception that you _have_ to pay for Cedega. Remember that the core is based on Wine, which is under the GPL, and therefore the sources for Cedega are legally available for free from the CVS.
http://www.transgaming.com/sources.php
They seem to hide it though and try to get you paying instead, but that should get you going towards free Cedega. - paintballpc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you don't need a good video card for it to work, it works perfectly on my old machine
i was impressed when it work with this card
MSI geforce 4 440mx 64mb (old card) even video out works - RobbieCrash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is as good a place as any to ask:
Can I run iTunes, or an OSS equiv, that will update my iPod and create and modify smart playlists like iTunes in Linux?
Is the installation for Nicotine any better than it was 3 years ago? - suldar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I had this running on Ubuntu Dapper. It's pretty cool. I kind'a didn't like forcing it to be installed though and it caused some minor problems. Waiting for a nice package to be available to install it. I think my favorite features were the screen switching and being able to make windows see through.
