- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -1/+42It can create wiki pages? NICE!
- flair1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+33for those of you that complain about OpenOffice being slow, all you need to do is change the settings. Now OpenOffice is fast.
http://fullfilth.blogspot.com/2007/08/how-to-make-openoffice-load-faster.html
Start Open Office and click on Tools > Options. This should open the configuration. Click on Memory in the left menu and change the following settings:
* Number of Steps: 30
* Use for Open Office: 128
* Memory per Object: 20
* Number of Objects: 20
Click on Java in the left menu afterwards and uncheck "Use a Java Runtime Environment". Click OK and restart Open Office to see how fast it is now. - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -2/+29OpenOffice does everything I need it to do for free. If you need more, than shell out some money for MS Office. You can request features, but you really can't go so far as to complain about the features a piece of free, open-source software is lacking.
- Carburetor, on 10/10/2007, -5/+20I really hope they made some tweaks to this resource hog, i mean, that's open source and all, and people donate from their own time, and that's blessed, but, open office should take advantage on office 2007, and I'm not sure it can at this time (except the price of course).
For example, i cannot use it on my old 600x thinkpad (p3 533), there are lags between the keyboard stroking and the typing on the screen, and it take ages to load, while office 2007 loads at no time.
That's the main reason i came back to the damn windows after 4 years of linux usage (archlinux and debian most of the time). i never found the right office alternative (that, and a normal traffic shaper, but that's an other story, and yes, i tried them all).
I guess i'll wait one or two years and try again this great system. - google01103, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17hmmm - FireFox invented tabs and Ubuntu invented Linux - who knew?
- tsupersonic, on 10/10/2007, -7/+20I love it for being free, but I just wish it was faster.
- weeble, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13There is a native OSX version in the works... keep up with it here... http://blogs.sun.com/GullFOSS/tags/mac
- darkNiGHTS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Goto the Options and then click the Java category and disable Java. It starts up much faster then.
- PicklePower, on 10/10/2007, -34/+46So when will they begin to copy the Office 2007 user interface? Up to this point they've pretty much copied the Office 2000/2003 UI, and not very well. In my opinion, they should have tried developing a better interface and a solid program while MS was sleeping between Office 2003 and 07 instead of copying every single useless feature and detail of MS Office. Now they're stuck at a dead end where they can't really copy MS Office anymore; they've got to make UI decisions on their own. That is, unless we start seeing attempts to replicate a ribbon outside of Office 2007 (like a few days ago). If it's such a great thing, then why not get the real Office software that uses it correctly? Oh, that's right. You're running Linux.
I'm just not impressed with OpenOffice. I used their PowerPoint copycat a few months ago and it ran like complete crap. Have they even implemented multiple monitor support yet? I can't be bothered to download it again to see. - arizonagroove, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13You are aware that .doc is closed format because Microsoft doesn't want non Microsoft software to be to fully implement the .doc format aren't you? That any compatibility with that format that exists in Open Office only because people have backwards engineered it?
By contrast, Open Office's native file format is an open spec. Any who wants to write software that is 100% compatible with the format is free to do so, even Microsoft in the highly unlikely even that they chose to do so. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Good news, but I'm not going to switch from Abiword or Gnumeric until OO.o is a lot faster (yes, I have done the tweaks. I have a slow computer.) And in fact Gnumeric seems to do a lot of stuff better and more easily than the OO.o one even though it uses far less resources.
- justinjstark, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11How old are you?
- crazybrit, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I've written too many big school assignments to count on OO.o. So it works fine for me.
- ludwik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Haven't you seen his nick? He's 5.
- justinjstark, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Josecc's links look good to me.
- tuxracer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8They felt it was extremely important that OpenOffice.org have a relatively small learning curve.
- Malakin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I have it running on a bunch of systems that are Celeron 400's, and it runs fine. Make sure you have the latest version of Java installed, as version 6 is noticeably faster than previous versions. I'm not sure what else to suggest other than obvious things such as defragmenting the hard drive.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Very little of OOo is Java based.
- stmiller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7nights is correct. Java is only used for macros. So unless you are doing some spiffy spreadsheet stuff with macros, just uncheck it.
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -1/+8The mirror does have an OS X version...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The OS X native version is in testing. You can download it if you want.
- plaxx, on 10/10/2007, -8/+14can they work on the GUI? it looks like *****.
- saleem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The point of open office is to wean people away from Microsoft independence. how can you blame these guys putting in their effort for free, for going after the 90% of the market that's on Windows. The 10% mac group, who's prolly smokin cigars over iWork, doesnt need to be the priority.
- ZPWeeks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I work in a lab where we do the MSDN Academic Alliance handouts of Vista and Office. They're included in student fees. It costs students $5/copy for Vista, and something similar for Office.
It's mostly a MS strategy to get students hooked now so their employers will pony up for the expensive software later. - burty89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6There's a few examples of prior art on the ribbon style interface (blender is one, I know there are others I just can't remember them), so if they get a patent it won't stand up in court.
- KeinEngel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Erm, have you googled "openoffice tabs" (without quotation marks) yet? http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Framework/WorkInProgress/Tabbed_Windows_Extension
- justinjstark, on 10/10/2007, -9/+14I do agree with several of your points. The OpenOffice user interface is pretty horrible. I went back to using Microsoft Office when I am on a windows machine at school just because Office 2007 is so much cleaner and easier to use.
- simd, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8I've got to agree with PicklePower - the UI manages to combine dullness and lack of usability into a single package. There must be someone out there, other than Apple, who can write a decent UI?
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Wean people away from Microsoft independence? Don't you mean dependence?
- drsox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4UK Mirror:
http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/download.openoffice.org/stable/2.3.0/OOo_2.3.0_Win32Intel_install_en-US.exe - antdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Is that a trusted mirror server?
- spyres, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Be aware that some (not a lot, but some) functionality is lost by disabling Java. Especially if one wants to use the "Base" module.
- mithrasinvictus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5it should be skinnable
- OrangeCrush, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Then use the native Linux version of Open Office. =p
- cavergeek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I like Open Office, but Office 2007 does seem to have taken back the office crown.
- Trixrox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I pay for books too, just spent $375 on books :( I also have a job, so I have my own debit card at my disposal, which I have to use for food, books, and tuition, which isn't so hard right now because I have scholarships that bring down the cost to about 400 dollars per quarter. It just so happens that software is offered with tuition.
- blablaman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I don't understand why the user has to change options (that the presumably know nothing about), in order for the program to run at a decent speed. Is there a reason this isn't done by default?
- Trixrox, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4They need to.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3Uh...I did say you can request features. And I didn't say you had to use it. If you think it's lacking features, then use another piece of software that has the features you want. That was exactly my point.
- mpineiro, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6This is complete blogspam.
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I suspect that this 'integration' will involve being able to use the Thunderbird address book for mail merging.
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Here's the link to the OS X native version: http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/aqua.html
- OrangeCrush, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's included in many distros and will ultimately trickle into the repositories once someone packages it.
- bubba9999, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4The Office 2007 interface is miserable. I hope they never copy it.
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Up to $10,000? If you wanted to us 'Mercan's of being rich bastards, just say $40,000 a year. I know private highschools for $25,000. Do moset people go to those schools? No. But you're just interested in slandering Americans, so why not use a more obscene tuition number?
- sruffelman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Why can't you? If it's lacking a feature, that is a valid reason to criticize it and not use it. Just because it's free I have to agree with it? I think I'll pass.
- Diderot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2THANK YOU, this was the only I could find about open office, now I will certainly recommend it to everyone in my family !
- MrSunshine, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I read all your comments on this news story while Open Office was loading.
- hyperair, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I hear that the ribbon isn't going to be patented, cause Microsoft wants the ribbon interface to be as widely spread as possible. Just think about it. If everybody uses the ribbon interface, then people would be more used to the Office 2007 interface right? Oh and if you're wondering where I got that bit of info from, its from some article dugg sometime back about some Mono developer bringing the ribbon interface to GTK#
