- AngryPenguin47, on 05/23/2008, -17/+89This project has become the Duke Nukem Forever of the mobile handset world.
- Jarulf, on 05/23/2008, -5/+20I really wanted a Neo phone about a year ago, but now I'm much more psyched about Google Android. OpenMoko had it's chance with me and unfortunatley wasted it with all the delays and broken promises. Too bad because the OpenMoko project could have been awesome.
- c00l2sv, on 05/23/2008, -3/+16Just give it some time... :)
- nandasunu, on 05/23/2008, -14/+27I want to like it, but its just sooo ugly :(
- Kral, on 05/23/2008, -0/+13Sadly, Android is just another 'Java Phone', but without the Java. Your Linux phone is in another castle, Mario.
- Obsidian743, on 05/23/2008, -0/+12I love Enlightenment so good for them! Maybe they'll finally get the boost they finally need to get out of the "alpha" development they've been in for 8 years. =/
- mossblaser, on 05/23/2008, -2/+14OpenMoko is not an iPhone! It is everything the iPhone stands against!
It is open. Anyone can mod it. It runs open source software, it was made with the 3rd party developers in mind, its fully functional. - Kral, on 05/23/2008, -2/+12Their phones exist and people have them. How is this Duke Nukem Forever?
- Yoshi39, on 05/23/2008, -0/+10The beuty of open-source would come in to action, most probably the only thing that would happen would be that a fork would be created that would remain under the gpl license
- scottied, on 05/23/2008, -2/+12I'll drop my iPhone in a blender if I can get a blinged out Enlightenment shell on a Neo phone.
iPhone is cool and everything, but Enlightenment's shell + an open phone framework would be unparalleled. - inactive, on 05/23/2008, -1/+10I clicked the link - its truly horrible looking.
- yetAnotherCroc, on 05/23/2008, -0/+8I'll have to agree. I hope they eventually hire a designer that can make that phone more visualy apealing.
- Gggarth, on 05/23/2008, -4/+11It's not that ugly :

I don't know where the picture on Ars Technica comes from, though... - Pfhor, on 05/23/2008, -0/+7That is no more a risk now than it was with Trolltech.
If more than a year passes without a major free Qt release, then the KDE Free Qt Foundation is allowed to step in and release Qt under the BSD license. The foundation board also has the right to exercise that power at any other time, should they pass it with an unanimous vote.

There is no need to worry about the continued support of opensource Qt. - Kral, on 05/23/2008, -1/+8GTK works fine - if it's broken for you when compiling from source, you've somehow managed to screw up what's been working for years and years for the various GPE platforms.
What's been burning people on mobile devices is it's slow to start, and some other operations have responsiveness issues (e.g., scrolling treeviews). However, unlike QTopia, it was using X11 so wasn't preventing all apps other than QTopia apps from running on devices (which is obviously a huge benefit). QTopia kinda liked that situation with owning the framebuffer as it forced developers of non-GPL-compatible software to buy licenses from them. What the OpenMoko people have apparently done here re porting QTopia to an X11 backend is major, as now the two frameworks can live together peacefully. - buddamus, on 05/23/2008, -2/+8Yes its ugly, but I still want one, hope it kicks the iphones ass all over the place
- reaper527, on 05/23/2008, -0/+5"OpenMoko's developer-oriented Neo1973 was released last year and the consumer model, called the FreeRunner, is expected to move into the mass production stage next month."
so if it enters mass production next month, should we be expecting to see initial shipments going out some time in late summer? - geoffeg, on 05/23/2008, -1/+6The programming I've done in GTK+ has been painful and I much prefer QT.
- inactive, on 05/23/2008, -1/+6I'm a GTK advocate and even I think that is a good move, you just have to take a look at the mobile version of Ubuntu, is good but take a look at the icons, they suck, they're the same as the gnome desktop version (which sucks too). Some people will say that is a little detail and I agree, is easy for the developers to change it but in that little detail you can see the commitment of the toolkit-devs to the platform.
Gnome looks more chained to the past with every passing day. - subliminalurge, on 05/23/2008, -1/+6Clicked your link, had to double check the URL. At first I thought I was at a page for a new phone made by Fisher-Price.
- spydon, on 05/23/2008, -0/+5They have started producing it now and it will ship to Europe soon...
- maninalift, on 05/23/2008, -1/+5At least it's prettier than East 17
- inactive, on 05/23/2008, -2/+6Technically Duke Nukem Forever exist as well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWuteFLUPSY - fnordy, on 05/23/2008, -0/+4Please, rasterman, finish E17!!!!! WE WANT!!!!
It makes all the other desktops look primitive and ugly, and runs so, so much faster! - Sammi84, on 05/23/2008, -8/+12Who's digging this comment down?
I for one have been waiting a whole lot longer for this phone than I originally anticipated. - inactive, on 05/23/2008, -0/+4Compiling GTK is easy.
Granted, It's not the best Tookit out there. Qt has the edge, imho. - troye, on 05/23/2008, -0/+4Agreed, but I want Android on the OpenMoko. I don't fancy QT on mobiles. I WANT ANDROID!!!!
- Peterix, on 05/23/2008, -1/+4iPhone != usable. Maybe when you hack it. It sucks without the hacks.
- priegog, on 05/23/2008, -0/+3I disagree... I happen to think it gives the highest functionality to processing required ratio of all window managers. I do feel the project is kind of stale, but hopefully things like this will jump-start it again.
- tsk1979, on 05/23/2008, -10/+13Good.
GTK framework is so badly broken if you try compiling from source.
Even after configure finds dependencies you have silly programs breaking compile(cairo etc., break),
QT is a much more robust framework for developers and is really seamless. - inactive, on 05/23/2008, -2/+5What would happen if Nokia decided to pull the plug. i.e. QT4 being the last free platform.
- troye, on 05/23/2008, -1/+4I want Android on the OpenMoko.
ANDROID ANDROID ANDROID - Yoshi39, on 05/23/2008, -0/+3The design , or at least the color scheme, was changed for the version that will be available to consumers this is what it looks like now
http://www.pocketpicks.co.uk/latest/wp-content/upl ... - jhuebel, on 05/23/2008, -0/+3That's not even in-game footage, is it? Anybody can produce 3D Animation. That doesn't mean it has any interactivity.
- inactive, on 05/23/2008, -5/+8It's kind of fugly... It does sound cool though, appearance aside.
- troye, on 05/23/2008, -0/+3It comes with a stylus though; that will make up for any perceived ugliness.
- ilgaz, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2There is no such thing. You must be confusing Nokia with some else company. Nokia bought Qt especially for their future multi platform stuff. They were already using Qt for every tool. Qt is worthless if smallest sign of non OS neutral thing happens.
- patpi, on 05/25/2008, -0/+2Try openSUSE11, Kubuntu doesn't have enough people to work on KDE. Kubuntu's KDE is lacking a lot. http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/478/
- inactive, on 05/25/2008, -0/+2Most of the people that used Gnome or Gtk is for the simplicity (me included). Qt owns Gtk since the 3 brand. Qt4 owns it even more. I'm currently using Gnome and I like it (I hate nautilus tho and thunar doesn't fill the gap) but I'm a prospective KDE4 user, I will try it maybe in the next kubuntu release.
- Peterix, on 05/23/2008, -2/+4Eh, who cares?
- robuk24, on 05/23/2008, -5/+7agreed
- inactive, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1We thought you would shutup by now, too. Still waiting for it...
- newwatch51, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1Yeah Matchbox is awesome
- ilgaz, on 05/27/2008, -0/+1I dugg it down since there is a working product, screenshots, videos, companies involved, huge money and the freaking China govt. involved.
What does it have to do with a never shipping game? - inactive, on 08/26/2008, -2/+3Why are you a GTK advocate? I'm no expert on toolkits, but from what I hear Qt4.4 owns the current Gtk.
- MattBD, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1E17 is awesome - if they can sort it out soon it'll be the ideal desktop for subnotebooks like the Eee PC. Plenty of cool effects but screamingly fast.
- MattBD, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1I think it looks OK
- newwatch51, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1How so? It seems to look and function fine.
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -1/+1Nah, the F-P Fone (http://tinyurl.com/2g9mqh) is going to be based on KDE4.
- inactive, on 05/23/2008, -2/+2No, It's pretty damn ugly. My GP2X blows it away in case design. (the F200 anyways :P Yes, It is a handheld for gaming - but other than it's gaming features it still has a more sophisticated looking case.)
It's the way the curves are. They should just be small on the corners like every other device. Also, I'm thinking the case should be a little smaller and the screen should be moved up so it is the same distance from the sides as it is from the top. -
