- LZeppelinJ0, on 07/03/2008, -12/+4Does it even fit in a normal pocket?
- AngryPenguin47, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5it may be big but it ain't exactly a Zack Morris phone...
- pbryan, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3A specially designed bag-like receptacle has been developed to allow you to transport this device. It can be hung from a belt, or concealed beneath a large coat.
- kelvie, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5Yes, it's the same size as an iPhone width/heightwise, but is thicker. It's also rounder around the corners (as opposed to the more rectangular shape).
- stupidStan, on 07/04/2008, -0/+11it fits in open-source pockets
- TheOther1, on 07/04/2008, -0/+7Right. You can just change the parameters of the pocket source code and recompile.
- bianconeri4ever, on 07/03/2008, -2/+11Ya this will be in my pocket on the 5th of July!
- minorgods, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1where did you get the flux capacitor?
- Dracker, on 07/03/2008, -0/+40Definitely what I need - a completely open phone. No sim locks, no proprietary OSs you can't just up and write a program for, no crippled bluetooth, no jailbreak needed, no dangerous hacks required just to do what the hardware is capable of.
Also, running linux opens up the floodgates for great software like Asterisk - I've been looking for a whitelist-based call screening solution for a long time, and this fits the bill nicely. Not to mention really interesting things like wifi voip, even if your plan has no data over GSM.
Embedded linux is a great platform, and I'm glad to see a marketable phone use it. Some may be put off by lack of 3G, though.- wisam, on 07/04/2008, -0/+8Not to mention A-GPS.
- MavRevMatt, on 07/03/2008, -4/+5If I wasn't already getting a first gen iPhone for free I would definitely be buying this. -This- is how phones should be, totally open.
- superkendall, on 07/04/2008, -4/+3If you feel that way, just jailbreak the iPhone!
- zwaldowski, on 07/04/2008, -3/+1If you feel that way, just give me a first gen iPhone for free!
- CTRaider, on 07/03/2008, -2/+5
- DJNephilim, on 07/04/2008, -1/+9Or any other CDMA network for that matter.....
- aautopsy, on 07/04/2008, -3/+6Theres like two of those. What are they supposed to do if your carrier doesn't follow a global standard.
- DJNephilim, on 07/04/2008, -1/+9Or any other CDMA network for that matter.....
- GeckoSlayer, on 07/04/2008, -6/+7I'll stick with my HTC with android, thanks.
- iofthestorm, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5I'm sure someone will work out how to get the OpenMoko OS onto HTC phones eventually too.
- superkendall, on 07/04/2008, -1/+15How can you stick with something that hasn't even shipped yet?
I think Android looks really promising, but it's just a promise until we see what the other end of the equation looks like with hardware and how carriers treat the 'Droid.- zwaldowski, on 07/04/2008, -4/+2By using it and liking it and wanting to use it more. How can you ask stupid questions?
- bieber, on 07/04/2008, -0/+7As nice as Android looks, words can't even describe how much I'm looking forward to a phone that won't tie me into Java. Being able to use Python, C, and so on and so forth is just...beautiful. Plus it's available tomorrow, which is even more awesome.
- jo21, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1symbian can do all you just mentioned.
- RyeBrye, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2The FreeRunner is a completely open phone. OpenMoko is an open OS. Android is an open OS. If you want to use android, more power too you.
- Abatrour, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Thats right, Google has to release the source for Android, so eventually it will be compiled to run on the Neo Freerunner. I cant wait for it to arrive in the mail :)
- karbonfyber, on 07/04/2008, -1/+8It's actually on sale already, a day early.
Not that it matters to me...- zorpscorp, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1The GSM 900's are already sold out!!
- blumph, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2Actually they haven't been put up yet:

The online store is already open. There are about 280 left, it seems. - itsradBrad, on 07/04/2008, -2/+2Sold Out
- bmouring, on 07/04/2008, -0/+0To all those who are complaining about it being sold out: There are 2 tri-band versions (a 850/1800/1900 for the US and a 900/1800/1900 for Europe and Asia). The shipment that arrived recently in Fremont was constituted of the 850 version only.
I agree that it's a bit confusing the way they handle the sales page, but the 850 version is still in stock. Once they receive some 900MHz versions, they will magically become "in-stock".

- LinuxGalore, on 07/04/2008, -1/+11The Openmoko is a great idea but the hardware is a bit meh!
For those not in the know Nokia has just purchased Symbian (OS on 60% of mobiles) and is releasing it as open source (and free) to counter googles new mobile platform called Android (based on Linux).

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13505_3-9975902-16.html - JanusTheDoorman, on 07/04/2008, -5/+4What the hell? For months and months we hear about this thing, as it goes from looking like it would have had a launch to compete with the queen of proprietary software, the iPhone, and now they launch it after Apple's already rolled out a second generation, with an announcement hitting the proper channels less than 24 hrs before the official launch, and then sell out before the launch actually happens?
I understand that professional reliability in product release is still an area that some sectors of the open-source movement have trouble with, but this is just embarrassing. - nastronomical, on 07/04/2008, -7/+2It doesnt support 3G, so whats the sense of getting it again?
- MainframeF4, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3The timing on this phone is really good. Granted Apple will have the 3G iPhone out soon, after adding all the new pricing details and higher phone costs there will be people who will look else where for a new phone. I hate that almost almost 2 weeks after the key note Apple and At&t pulled a bait and switch by introducing all the new prices and rates for what i and im sure many people thought would be a $199/$299 phone. They got enough hype about it and slip the extra prices in probably thinking that no one will care and i personally dislike their deep pocket marketing scheme.
Its nice to see the small guys making functional devices at a decent price with many features and upgrade options. Cant wait to see what apps and ideas people come up with for the FreeRunner. - krisscofield, on 07/04/2008, -5/+6lol Moko in Spanish = booger. OpenBooger to launch July 4th.
- blumph, on 07/04/2008, -0/+7Actually it's 'moco'. What are you like 5?
- dougs55, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1not as bad as chevy nova
- bieber, on 07/04/2008, -1/+3Holy *****, they're already selling out. Does anyone know if they're planning to continue production of this model, or is it going to be a fixed run like the last one?
- Jenadae, on 07/04/2008, -3/+2Whats up with the ***** storage?
- charlie763, on 07/04/2008, -0/+6It can be expanded with a Micro SDHC card.
- RyeBrye, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5That certainly sold out fast.
- Atomic1fire, on 07/04/2008, -0/+9Gives new meaning to the phrase Independence day
- Bluerayusa, on 07/04/2008, -4/+2hehe, in spanish moko means booger!
Very impressive, another thing added to the "will drool all over for this item" list. - craterburnsu, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2I'd get one if i was on a GSM network. Sprint is the only thing i get decent coverage with in my area... so i put up with their terrible customer service.
- clockdist, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1It *is* a GSM phone. Feel free to chose your network (AT&T or T-Mobile in the US).
I'd be tempted if it was 3G, but I don't know of a Linux killer-app that would make me want this phone--and I'm not up for developing one. iPhone 3G has nothing to worry about...yet.
- clockdist, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1It *is* a GSM phone. Feel free to chose your network (AT&T or T-Mobile in the US).
- earthmansurfer, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1It is a bit odd though that Linux on the desktop has helped bring costs down and on a cell phone it's upper priced. I wish a manufacturer would put out something cheap and simple (and expandable to a point) that is under 100 Dollars or Euros.
- aautopsy, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1IDK about in Europe but in America, unless you buy a phone on a contract, its going to cost over 200$ even for the ***** low end phones.
- reaper527, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1yeah, i paid around $300 for my n-gage qd the day it came out (i love it, and still use it today, although i am considering the openmoko). once you factor in inflation between then and now, this isn't too unexpected/unreasonable.
the reason it seems expensive is that people are used to seeing subsidized phones, as you said.
