- lickmyback, on 08/09/2008, -1/+26Whatever your opinion on the Freerunner, do NOT listen to Dave Fayram. The guy is a tool who seems to think that reviewing an open-source development platform in the context of a consumer device with millions of dollars worth of financial backing is a valid comparison. He needs to take a seat and go back to fawning over his iPhone with it's strict developer NDAs and restrictive APIs (not to mention provider lock-in), handicapped by a manufacturer deadset on thwarting any attempt by hackers to open their phone in any way, shape or form.
Openmoko is about freeing mobile technology and putting it back in the hands of people who actually use it, not being a consumer-ready fashion statement. The 2008.8 release is no different. - york2600, on 08/09/2008, -2/+19I like how there's a spot on the map in the screenshots labeled Girlfriend. Really...No need to lie. You bought an open source phone. You have no girlfriend.
- lickmyback, on 08/09/2008, -1/+13Can't play anything but OGG? Get your facts straight, it plays MP3s straight out of the box. I own one.
- Ellipsys, on 08/09/2008, -2/+13I have to admit that while the software platform looks promising, the hardware just does not. I can't spend $400 on what amounts to a developer curiosity that I can't use as a day to day phone. Make it quad band, 3G, multitouch, and shrink the formfactor considerably, and I'll ditch my iPhone for it.
- Maybelline, on 08/09/2008, -1/+10I personally prefer the FSO. It's got some of the flash of the ASU (2008.8), but with a completely rock-solid backend. The only drawback (so far) is that there's no contacts/phonebook app yet. But, it reads from & writes to your SIM card phonebook, so it's not that big a deal. I created a couple of scripts to connect to my WAP2 wifi at home, and added the Midori browser & a terminal, and I'm set.
As a FreeRunner owner, I couldn't be happier to not have an iPhone. - drikle, on 08/09/2008, -1/+8The software version the guy is reviewing is the Om 2007.2. And yes it has a usable keyboard, it has 3 different keyboards. I own a freerunner and have just installed the om 2008.8 milestone 1, and I love where this is going.
- chokeaduck, on 08/09/2008, -0/+72007 called, they wanted their memes back.
- arj03, on 08/09/2008, -2/+9Seems still quite beta :(
- spydon, on 08/09/2008, -0/+7Hmm so we have FSO, ASU, 2007.2, SHR and 2008.8 or is 2008.8 a mix of some of the others? :P
And btw the freerunner rocks, I have never had so much fun with a cellphone before. :) - cdawzrd, on 08/09/2008, -0/+6So... to summarize... no word on when they will be available. How was I inaccurate?
- voidptr, on 08/09/2008, -3/+9As long as the OpenMoko and FSF communities keep trying to position the platform as a valid competitor to the iPhone, it's a valid comparison to argue.
http://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/5-reasons-to-av ...
"There are better alternatives on the horizon [...] like the FreeRunner." - trogdoor, on 08/09/2008, -7/+12Does it have a usable keyboard?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3ntUy2eqlk - cdawzrd, on 08/09/2008, -1/+6Argh, all this waiting for a usable iPhone alternative! No updates or real news about Android in over a month; no word on when more OpenMoko handsets will be available, wait wait wait! Want now!!
- lickmyback, on 08/09/2008, -0/+5Better alternatives "on the horizon" means not yet, at least in terms of functionality. The same page also states:
"The FreeRunner doesn't yet do as much as the iPhone and it's certainly not as pretty. But in terms of potential... [the Freerunner is] light-years ahead."
The FSF page advocates avoiding the iPhone for the reasons given and asserts that the Freerunner has more future potential, but does not suggest that it is a valid competitor in the consumer market. The only people making that assumption are the Apple fanboys afraid that Openmoko might step on their precious little iToes - they needn't worry, it's not quite there. Yet. - zlintux, on 08/09/2008, -0/+4Actually the space there isn't wasted. The button curve is actually the GSM antenna, and the top one is the GPS.
There is however some "wasted space" -- but it's unavoidable. In order for the battery to fit and not be this weird rectangular block sticking out of an otherwise smooth back, they had to add some extra space... - cdawzrd, on 08/09/2008, -0/+4I just wish the OM phone didn't look stupid... all that wasted space in the upper and lower curve sections, why not just make it a rectangular phone and get half of that space back for a larger screen?
- peaceninja, on 08/09/2008, -1/+5i hate this video, ive seen it before and it's definitely spreading misinformation and i can back the other two comments above mine
- mrmorris, on 08/10/2008, -0/+3- iPhone is proprietary and requires you sell your soul to Steve Jobs (and mortgage your house).
- Android is vaporware, no point really in talking about it.
- OpenMoko suffers from neither of the above. But thanks for the very objective and argumented analysis! :p - gfer66, on 08/09/2008, -2/+5 "it's not quite there. Yet."
So you say OpenMoko will be ready the Year of Desktop Linux? - peaceninja, on 08/10/2008, -0/+2@trogdoor - the guy is only showing one keyboard out of numerous keyboards, and he's trying to peck at the tiny keys (a keyboard thats for the stylus) with his fingers
- Thomaschaaf, on 08/09/2008, -1/+3Seems to look so open source like in the inside wow on the out site OUUCH. (Looks sooo ugly but the software seems to be great)
As said somewhere Linux needs some good designers... - stix213, on 08/10/2008, -0/+2ASU == 2008.8
- spydon, on 08/10/2008, -0/+2Well maybe because it is? :P
- mannymix03, on 08/09/2008, -1/+3Agreed, I'll get buried for it but right now neither the software nor hardware is ready for primetime. With some development the software can be amazing and I can't wait, but they really need to revise their hardware (especially the screen) before anyone will use it as their day-to-day phone besides developers
- cdawzrd, on 08/09/2008, -0/+2"Girlfriend dumped me" because I got this phone
- starkruzr, on 08/09/2008, -3/+4I don't know why you got dugg down; it's not like you're wrong. MP3 support is fairly recent.
This entire project has been a disastrous failure. - earlycj5, on 08/09/2008, -3/+4OpenMoko handsets are available. There have been pictures of them in the wild posted in the last month or two.
http://www.openmoko.com/product.html
Says they are currently sold out, but expecting more on July 25. Needs an update it would seem. - Atomic1fire, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1software is not made useable at its conception
All tools need to be tested before they can be bought and used - SuperMoses, on 08/09/2008, -0/+1Wow, that guy is a tool. Thanks for showing me that video. It has shown me what's wrong with society.
- trogdoor, on 08/09/2008, -0/+1What misinformation? Is that video not showing the real interface?
- zlintux, on 08/09/2008, -0/+1The Canadian distributor has them in stock.
Word has it, another production run is being done, due out for sale in early September.
The company was afraid to over-produce and then sit with stock, so they erred on the side of caution... - aristotle0dude, on 08/09/2008, -3/+4I'm sorry but the purpose of software is to be used by users. If software is not usable, it does not matter what license it has. The same thing goes for hardware on which the software runs. Being "open" is no excuse for poor build quality and design.
- starkruzr, on 08/09/2008, -3/+3You're nuts. Enjoy having enormous difficulty with input.
- Remlapw, on 02/13/2009, -0/+0yeah linux does need good designers but it will come when it finally becomes more popular
http://www.how--to-make-money-online.blogspot.com - drikle, on 08/09/2008, -2/+0There also is the official qtopia distribution.
2008.8 is the development version of the ASU I think (correct me if I'm wrong) and ASU is a mix of 2007.2 and qtopia. (or something like that) - inactive, on 08/09/2008, -5/+1***** you! Two of my friends were KILLED for wanting their memes back,
- freqk, on 08/09/2008, -7/+2iPhone > Android > OpenMoko
- BesideYouInTime, on 08/09/2008, -10/+3No camera, No 3g/EDGE, no USB 2.0, can't play anything but Ogg....skip this and wait for GTA03
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -7/+0But will it blend?
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -15/+3can´t they give it a better name?
