- nukem996, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9They should go with 2.6.23. By the time its out it will be stable and the new scheduler will increase performance. I always use the latest stable kernel and never have a problem. By the time 7.10 comes out 2.6.23 will be stable, they should just use that.
- Gagle, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11You can configure your mouse buttons to fit your needs in the xorg.conf file. I know, it's not user-friendly but there's a price for freedom.
- kurtkraut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Ubuntu is released twice a year. It is expected that the changes between versions is not so intense. Doesn't make sense to me the statement 'Gutsy looks like Feisty'. It is just a Feisty upgrade. If you compare versions separeted by one year you will notice more intense improvements.
- akkibaba, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8So what exactly made you come to a Linux story and comment on how you love Windows?
- benanzo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Anyone can build the most godawfully unstable system on the planet by taking the latest bleeding edge svn shots of every piece of core OS code and rolling it into an ISO for download. The trick is to actually make the system usable after doing that.
- vh1`, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6the KDE games are getting a massive overhaul for KDE4
and also reported in the latest KDE4 commit digest (I think) was the ability to change cursor themes without restarting KDE
as for the cursors changing when you mouseover another application, that I have no explanation for. if you were running konqueror as root they would change, but the chances of that are slim - demozthenz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I like it a lot, Ubuntu = love
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5They might end up having to ship with 2.6.23, there's a really huge performance regression in the kernel that causes I/O to be painfully slow (and with Tracker, the desktop is basically unusable).
10 hopes they get the kernel I/O business fixed before Tribe 5. - Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5There have been updated kernels post release. It wouldn't be the first time.
- Darkhacker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I haven't used any of the Tribes, but you're not alone. There is a thread about this on the forums and some users have provided a few tips. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=521917
- TheRealToma, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Rumor? Certainly wont be the default browser, but hey, at least it leaves room for running FF2 & 3 on the same machine without any hassles.

"This is a build of a random development version (aka granparadiso). It is ment for preview and not for production use." - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6maybe its just me but application startup is kinda slow.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Just stop. You are making yourself look worse.
- Aninhumer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Actually, if they come through with all this, I think this will be the first time the improvements could be considered a new major version.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4On one hand you slate Novell at every given opportunity. On the other, you come across as a Suse fanboi. I'm getting mixed messages.
- steveoa3d, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I just installed Gutsy last night and tried to login via VNC just now when I saw your comment. I can login but all I get is a black screen with a pointer. So I guess no it's not fixed....
- ha1f, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7kind of like arch? or gentoo? wait, but those always work even when they arent in testing...
i mean, its like theyre better than ubuntu at something! is that allowed?
ubuntu fanboys are worse than mac fanboys. officially. - nayr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3how is kde4 'optional' if it ships with kubuntu gutsy?
- Makurosu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It looks like they do know about it. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/77442
- sparrowkc, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5How happy for you. I have a nice computer and can download ubuntu. I don't want Windows, search youtube for Compiz Fusion. I dugg you down. Like you care,
- zenlunatic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Same with me on XP
- Makurosu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Anybody know if they have fixed the problem of remote desktop not working while Compiz Fusion is active?
- tripzero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2considering anything a "major" version is very subjective. The kernel is a great example of this. Small, frequent incremental evolution of the software. They don't consider making a 2.8 version of the kernel because of the way the natural evolution is taking place. Every kernel release has X new features that could itself warrent a major version change. But its all relevant to the pace of the evolution and the frequency of the enhancements.
While this release seems to have a lot more than feisty had over edgy, I would still maintain that ubuntu is just doing what makes sense. Compiz-fusion just makes sense. Not including KDE4 by default makes sense. But one release isn't going to look too different than the pervious one based on looks alone.
In contrast if you compare win98 to xp to vista, you will see a major difference. But take into consideration the time span in between releases (4-7 years). - eznet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Im diggin tribe 4 so far. Running the 64bit on my notebook with no real problems. nVidia chipset wasn't 'seen' by the restricted manager, but I don't use it anyways (just configure my system the ol' fashion way). There do seem to be a bit in the way of bugs, but they are rapidly being worked out. Initially on install I could not use FF as a result of some glib incomparability but it was easily solved via the ubuntuforums. As of now, the only real problems I am having is Emerald is being a bit buggy from time to time (usually fixed with killall gdm and reload) and Keyring Manager can't remember *****... other than that, all is good.
- Makurosu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2@steveoa3d: That's sort of how it behaves in Feisty too, when I have Compiz Fusion running. I can log in, see the screen, and move the cursor around and do things, but the screen doesn't get updated with anything I do. Thanks for testing that.
@eznet: Maybe the problem only happens in the 32 bit version.
I suppose we ought to be having this conversation over on the Ubuntu bugs website. I wonder if they know about it. - JohnnyXmas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It better work better than Tribes 4 would.
::ducks:: - eznet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Um... Working for me. I am using 7.10 (Tribe 4) 64 bit and can use remote connection over vnc protocol with no problem. There is no streaming video (who needs it), but I can fully control my desktop via the VNC server on it - all with compiz fully active... The only 'major' bug that I have been unable to resolve is the keyring manager develops amnesia every session which is quite irritating though I have read of an 'easy' fix... just been to busy to try it... maybe today... maybe not.
- preem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1it has everything to do with bill gates wet dream.
nobody said adobe doesn't make great software, they do, but you can't say the same for microsoft. as for the OOS equivalents, there are many many great ones, doing the tasks just about the same as microsofts one. ofc, there are pro softwares, that cant be replicated, but dont u f00king say its not about gates wet dreams.
there are too many people jerking off to gates thats why ms has so big market share. oh, and because in the 90's there was nobody else to make software but them, except apple, but they didnt do so great considering their miserable 5% market share. - benanzo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It'll be tricky for them to switch to 2.6.23 after spending the last few months prepping 2.6.22 as the installed kernel. I bet they stay with 2.6.22.
- akkibaba, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It's clear to me that you don't really know what the Free Software community means when we say 'freedom'. Please stop trying to dig yourself out of this hole.
- Noctem, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I've got Kubuntu 7.10 Tribe 4 running in a VM. It seems pretty nice so far, but it's not a huge upgrade from 7.04, especially since KDE4 will be optional (And hopefully easier to install when both are fully released - I followed the directions on the Kubuntu site to get KDE4 going, and it worked, but it's definitely still buggy, and in beta, I know). The best addition I noticed so far was the Restricted Driver Manager finally has a proper Kubuntu package and gets installed automatically if necessary.
I do think, however, that they need to work on consistency throughout various applications in Kubuntu. The mouse cursor changes colors (?) when going from the desktop to Konquerer. If I want to change my mouse cursor theme, I have to restart KDE!? That has to change, IMHO. A simple change like that should not require a restart of the WM (Maybe it's a limitation of X? I don't really know). No games are installed by default (not a big deal), and the ones in the repository can be really, really ugly. These are just a few of the things I noticed after playing around for about an hour. - nayr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Also, yast sucks as a package manager. Takes my five minutes to install anything. It's very 90s.
- Noctem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the info - I definitely don't keep that close a watch on the community, so that's all good news. As far as the mouse cursors changing, I'm definitely not running Konq as root, and this is after a clean install and running apt-get update / apt-get dist-upgrade before running anything. Just now though, I changed my cursor theme to something else, and now it stays the same no matter what app I switch to. Seems like it might be an out of the box bug or something.
- benanzo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I still can't believe there are people in the world that see software as anything more than mathematics. Have you ever paid for the privilege of multiplying two numbers or calculate the circumference of a circle? You don't pay for the math, you pay for the tutor to teach you math, but you don't buy the math. Dugg down for continuing to be Bill Gates wet dream.
- zdlatham, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I'm a bit of a ubuntu or linux for that matter novice (I am a macbook user trying to get rid of a xp desktop). I spent about 4 hours one afternoon trying to get mouse back buttons to work and never got it working (at least not yet). I'm just hoping it gets added to the mouse preferences panel.
- Darkhacker, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Why do I have the feeling you've never seen a single line of kernel source code in your life? You're not "paying for math", you are paying for a software tool that does the job you need. Just because it can be expressed in binary doesn't make it any less useful. Hell, I could probably make you look stupid for paying for water when it is pretty much everywhere around you. You'd look even more foolish if you bought bottled water.
If open source is so much better, why does Microsoft have majority market share and why do even the most hardcore OSS fanatics admit Adobe applications are better than the OSS equivalents? OSS is not the end-all solution. Some people choose to buy/sell proprietary software and others don't. It has nothing to do with "Bill Gates wet dream". It's call business. Grow up and get used to it. - Noctem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It doesn't. KDE4 is still in early beta stages, and I don't think the roadmaps coincide for a simultaneous release in October. They'll just add the official KDE4 packages to a repository after the official 7.10 release and KDE4 goes final.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'd say exactly the opposite to that.
- nayr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1...
That's in feisty right now! - kris33, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Have they fixed stereo on surround sound systems? I have a 6.1 system, but all stereo is played on the speakers behind me.
- renegadeafk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And this kernal bug rapes compiz performance on some PC's. Friggin impossible to use.
- cynicist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1bury*
- Makurosu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Very cool. I'm looking forward to Gutzy. :)
- CCmachined, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1hey, very good point. STOP DIGGING HIM DOWN!
- trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You might like Arch, It is a binary distribution but like Gentoo has rolling ( packages are updated as they become stable for those who are not familiar ) releases and pacman is a great package manager along with the Arch Build System
- carbonfree314, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I want Voracious Velociraptor.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1How does it handle config updates? That is the main thing that brought me to a debian based system. I got tired of 'dispatch-conf' in Gentoo.
- EclipseAgent, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's not YaST that is slow, it is the RPM packages that need to be speeded up. Ubuntu def. has the advantaves with DEB's
- EclipseAgent, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I do to, but sometimes you have to try things "Out of the Box" .. I like trying it like that because not everyone is going to run out and compile their own Kernel..
Oh and GDM < KDM - meltingrobot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Eh, I never really cared about openSUSE. And after Novell selling themselves down the river to MS, screw that. Redhat for servers, Ubuntu on desktop. I just recently tried out Sabayon and found it to be fairly disappointing. Too much stuff just broken on what is supposed to be a stable release.
