- PiGuy, on 10/11/2007, -34/+141So 400 people join a day because they can't figure out how to make stuff work?
- rgov, on 10/11/2007, -10/+79Must I be the first to point out that 21,000 users/month and 400 users/day would make a month about 53 days long?
- ultrahombre, on 10/11/2007, -17/+55poor bastards....
I cant find the drivers either. - Roger, on 10/11/2007, -19/+47Exactly. I doubt people sign up because everything works fine. Most probably go back to Windows anyway.
- OJXs, on 10/11/2007, -17/+38"Could they be leader in taking out Microsoft?"
No. - VileTimes, on 10/11/2007, -3/+21Actually, I joined to learn and to help others do the same when I can. ;)
- DonCarcharo, on 10/11/2007, -11/+28Right now I've got two Macs, two Windows machines and one Ubuntu box. Guess which forum I've spent the most time on? The same one that gains 400 new users every day. People are signing up because they're desperate for help. It's certainly not for casual conversation, those forums are anything but a fun read. Well that is unless you enjoy five hundred threads about WiFi not working (to which my favorite response is the dependable, "why are you using wifi anyway?")
Frankly I'd be more impressed if very little people were joining the Ubuntu forums. At least that's a sign that the product is working properly. - GaryS278, on 10/11/2007, -5/+20That's because you're required to sign up to download attachments.
- wisie, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Fantastic forums too as initially when I had problems the replies were quick
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13You can buy commercial support from Canonical.
- TDTech, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16I actually signed up and didn't use it. I wanted to know before I got it if it worked with the programs I needed.
- Tweakedenigma, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12I'll I can think sitting here reading this is what happened to the Computer Community as a whole. When did this Holy war over OS's start? What is the point of all this? I mean really use whatever works best for you, I have switched a number of people to Linux some loved it and stayed others didn't and went back to Windows and Mac and thats fine. But I think we are all getting out of hand with this My OS is better then your junk. There are two Undeniable facts those being
1) MS controls most of the market /
2) Apple and Linux are making gains every day.
What does this mean some people are living Windows a large number will stay in the end competition in this are has been need for a long time. I mean look what happened to IE without a competitor. FireFox comes along and we get a better IE good for the Firefox people and the IE people. Mac and Linux Gains will help the people who stay with windows because MS will need to make a better product is this bad for any of us end users no because then it causes Linux and Mac to have to make better products. Anyone see a trend?
So how about we leave the name calling at the door if you wanna discuss on tech merits all the power too you but Digg is becoming a waste land of pathetic insults. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12ubuntuforum is probably more popular then digg.com. dont kid yourself, digg aint that bigg in the rest of the world.
- VileTimes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Wrong.
There are so many users on the Ubuntu forums because Linux isn't Windows. There's a lot to explore, especially when one comes from a background where a new software set-up wizard is supposed to take care of all your problems/driver conflicts and won't even tell you why or how something broke. Try uninstalling the same Windows application and admire all of the garbage it leaves on your computer.
Aptitude is my friend, and I hope others make it theirs as well. - evil-doer, on 10/11/2007, -21/+30do you have any idea how many people try linux, then abandon it after they find out how lackluster it is? im sure 80+% of these people that post are not posting anything more a few months down the road when theyve gone back to windows or mac. btw, im not a troll, im a realist. i try linux now and then and want it to be good, but its still not that great yet.

- quado, on 10/11/2007, -13/+22Just this week I was trying to find a lightweight distro for an old laptop I use, and I found it very hard to move away from Ubuntu and its derivatives, just because of the community at Ubuntuforums.org and the large wiki many of the members support. If you use Ubuntuforums, then you know that you will never have problems with anything in linux, or at least for not more than a few minutes. There are SO MANY experienced members there to help you, and all the members there become better linux users, who then help other new linux users.
I love Linux (favorite distro has to be Linux Mint, a derivative of Ubuntu). It is by far my favorite Operating System...If only it was the favorite operating system of game developers...At least id makes games for Linux. - GaryS278, on 10/11/2007, -6/+14well it's a pretty big ***** bug then
- chowmeined, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9and not every user signs up
- straxus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7No, you go back to Windows because you just already know how it works.
- sebzzz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9As a power user, I refuse to touch Windows with a 100 foot stick.
- Tweakedenigma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Given the fact that I get a number of requests from people that are about how do I install things, or whats a good program for this or that. More often then not I find its not a problem so much as people trying to get their legs.
- straxus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Windows has never blown my *****. That settles it, I'm switching right now.
- bytecolor, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9I'm just glad there _is_ an FREE alternative. Kudos to the people that put this stuff together. I don't see Linux putting Windows out of business any time soon, but... *nix systems have been around for going on 40 years. In my opinion, they will be around long, long after Windows is a bad memory. They just keep getting better where Windows just keeps getting... well.
- Awspire, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13Sure they do:

I mean you can look at a cup half empty and come to that conclusion or you can look at it half full and say that there are more people wanting to learn linux.
But hey judging from your attitude I wouldn't expect you to think anything different than trolling. - Buelldozer, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12I'm digging you down, but not because of your Ubuntu bashing. I'm digging you down because you're a distro snob and you deserve it!
- cynicist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6It shows there are many people giving it a try, which is a good thing.
- Bonzodog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I think that Ubuntu makes a great Desktop usage distro -- I would agree that it isn't so great for server usage. They are more aiming at Desktops than servers.
For servers, I stick to things like Slackware, Redhat, or even BSD. BSD makes for great servers. - sebzzz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6My god, how can people hate Linux that much when I feel that exact same hate for Windows?
- 2kude, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Is that why most of the web, including Digg, your little ranting place, runs on it?
Lame story, but lamer attempt at trying to be funny from you. - malbolgias, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Saying your a power user as a reason you stick with windows is pretty lame.
- jackyyll, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5You realize the installer has a partitioner built into it, right?
- evozero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I have ubuntu installed on my ps3 and I'm impressed. for a free os, it really is full featured and includes a good deal of software already installed. however, ubuntu has strides to make in various areas. i find that anyone who doesn't understand computers to a reasonable degree will just get frustrated by it and say its garbage. it would be the perfect os for many people if they just made simple things like syncing an ipod and transferring digital photos easier and more integrated. i could use it as my only os no problem (i use mac osx fyi), but those i know with minimal computer knowledge this isn't a viable solution... yet.
- mickt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5And it seems like 1/2 of them can't search the forum for questions that have been asked & answered numerous times.
- jdhore1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I honestly believe that the ONLY 2 good things about Ubuntu are: 1. It's easy to use/install for newbs 2. The "support" is the best of any distro i've seen...
- quikboy, on 10/11/2007, -11/+16You have to really think about this. Lots of services/forums/boards get lots of users every day.
But how many actually stick to it, or stay there? I know lots of people who make dummy accounts, for many purposes, and they don't always use it.
So could these numbers be misleading? - stalefries, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8That's actually a known bug with OpenSUSE, I think. I read about it somewhere else.
- MWeather, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5You have a Broadcom chipset, don't you?
- K3ITHK, on 10/11/2007, -9/+13And not everyone that signs up is a user...
- VileTimes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4For the most part, I agree with you. A lot of people are forgetting what a computer is and should be: a tool to help you be more productive in life. The OS you choose to use should not be the equivalent of a football jersey one wears while pumping their fist in the air in support of their favourite team.
With that said, however, I do believe that the recent popularity of Ubuntu has something, if not a lot, to do with a new generation of computer users who don't mind spending the time to learn a few things about the machines they're using if it'll save them some money in the long run. Open source is free in terms of hard money, but it might cost a bit in terms of time to understand when all you've ever seen is OSX or Windows (is time really money when you're 19 years old?). In fact, I'll put some hard money on the theory that most people who bitch about Ubuntu (and Linux in general) are folks that are used to doing the same old thing the same old way, whereas proponents are younger and more open-minded as a consequence. - cfazzini, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Who leaves the XP/Vista disc in their computer after they install it?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Only envious people with low self esteem use the word "winblowz", like you did in http://digg.com/microsoft/Evolution_of_versions_Windows
- jdhore1, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10I personally don't know ANYONE who has tried Linux and gone back to Windows...Myself included...I think it's people realizing how horribly Ubuntu sucks and moving to another distro over people thinking Ubuntu/linux sucks and going back to Windows.
- stiankarlsen, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I think it's so sad when you people always talk down about stuff you don't understand. Had it been the other way around (meaning had Linux been as much used as windows, and vice versa), this headline would read: "Official Microsoft Windows Forums gain 400 members per day", and you would be talking crap about that.
edit, no matter what the situation, there's always a bunch of windows boys that _have_ to find some negative side of everything that is related to another OS... its really lame. - straxus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4All empires fall. It's more than possible. It's inevitable. Have patience, young one.
- mrsteveman1, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Or people who get tired of watching baseless advocation of things that don't deserve much attention (not specifically ubuntu, in general).
- TechCF, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Well I signed up to help develop Ubuntu and help users (signed up to Launchpad.net aswell)
- div2n, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6"im not a troll"
I think thou doth protest too much.
It depends on what's important to you. If you're a hardcore gamer of games that don't have a Linux port, Linux isn't there YET. If you are a Visual Studio .Net junkie, same thing.
Of course if all you do is surf the internet, check email, write a few papers and play solitaire (which accounts for a lot more users than some people think) then Linux is a far better option than anything Microsoft has ever dreamed. Period. - stmiller, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5"at the end of the day I can boot up a Windows OS on my other computer that is compatible with EVERYTHING. I can run games, MS office..."
spyware, viruses, trojans, kernel level OS holes through a web browser, documented unpatched exploits, EVERYTHING !
Security problems are what will/are taking down Microsoft. Not Linux or anything else. MS needs to address security vs. having grandma's favorite windows 95 app being able to run in Vista. -
