- OneManArmy, on 10/11/2007, -13/+31"that will make your _Co-Workers_ Drool"
Unfortunately, like 90% of the corporate population, I am stuck with using Windows at work :(. - theonlyvlad, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20Mmm, my dock is bigger than yours.
- dentarthurdent1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16yeah, neither method of installation works on feisty
- EvilDr.X, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13I need something to make my co-workers stop drooling. Anything for that?
- rebopper, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16@onemanarmy
On windows you can try "Aqua Dock". It will make your co-workers drool. Or they will think you are a nerd, like my job did.
google it. - RunOut, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Rocket Dock for windows acts more like the OS X Dock then Aqua Dock
- workingnonstop, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Buried as lame - simply for using the phrase "pimp review" in your description.
- sabrebutt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11This is a guide back from breezy.
- defectDS, on 10/11/2007, -10/+20This is what I don't get about Linux. When something takes up a 3-4 paged tutorial on how to instal it, how could you recommend linux to your mom or a family member as a viable replacement for Windows? I just don't understand is all.
- krazykit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Keep in mind this is wildly out of date. e no longer uses .eap among other changes.
- Aliarse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8@krazykit (#6747153)
So in other words, this is useless?
Buried. - jdong, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8On Linux, there is also the Avant Window Navigator ( http://code.google.com/p/avant-window-navigator/ ) which is the dock that I like the most. There are distro-specific packages at http://awn.wetpaint.com/page/Download for Fedora, Ubuntu, Suse, and others.
- sid0, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Most people? Which planet are you living on?
- xpliclt777, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10for windows users, ObjectDock http://www.stardock.com is pretty much the same thing. It's free too
- jrbrewin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6"Most companies with large-scale Microsoft deployments are virtualising them on linux/unix subsystems for reliability."
you've done a survey of all companies before pulling that little nugget out of your ass, i assume? desktop virtualisation or even widescale terminal services type deployments with dumb terminals are still in the minority in business. - yugiohdan6, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Y'z Dock looks and acts EXACTLY like the Mac OS X dock (they were even sued by apple)
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Yz-Dock.shtml - wrestlingnrj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I've been using objectdock for over a year now and haven't had any issues with it.
- ArnoldTPants, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7@danielharker
You know there are several programs that do the same thing for Windows, right?
Obviously not. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7
- matt0507, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I am running Avant Vindow Navigator on Ubuntu and it works great, so give it a try if you want more choices :)
- xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5gah, this beyond old.... :
- evilra666it, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4 - zmigliozzi
maybe you need a refresher course as well. "An" is use in front of words the begin with vowel sounds not just if the first letter is a vowel. "M" being pronounced "em", in English, it should be pretty easy for a 5th grader to figure out. Hope you pass your next spelling test and try not to open your cum dumpster before correcting people's posts.
xoxo - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4kiba dock is nice (when it doesnt crash)
- ryanknapper, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Why are they reviewing pimps?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Darkcity, stop it! You are making us normal Mac users look bad!
- SPECOPS, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8Spam your gay porn elsewhere.
- sid0, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5darkciti = troll. The sun has risen. darkciti has turned into stone.
- svenjick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Boated & ugly copy. (Why do they have to add a white halo around every icon? what's the point?)
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+10Seeing as more than 90% of work desktops use Windows instead of Linux and that all my co-workers use Windows, no it will not make them drool.
- quietcynic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5As a Mac user and an M3 owner, I formally request you stop being such a giant tool.
- abwesth, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Who needs a dock? Join the revolution and start using Quicksilver (mac) or launchy (win) - I'm sure there must be something similar for Linux.
- zmigliozzi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3daniel... Do you even use linux? Who posts a guide to a non-supported distro...
- Nanite, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5"OS X Style Dock that will make your Co-Workers Drool"
Unless of course your coworkers have a macbook. :) - zmigliozzi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2So uh, Breezy is no longer supported, thus making this guide useless if you are tying to do this on feisty.
- scot524, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Couldn't agree more. Using avant-window-navigator on my laptop and desktop for about three weeks and seems quite stable. I've tried kiba-dock before that and found it unstable and difficult to configure. Looks great but I don't actually think I've seen anyone drool.
- rouslan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Even though I do like the OSX dock effects, I find it very space-consuming since I prefer to have the top and bottom panel as thin as possible to increase screen space, unlike the large bottom bar in Windows. I put essential apps such as terminal, text editor, etc. at the top between the menu and system monitor (some parameters are not covered in gkrellm) and mostly just use the applications menu; it doesn't take much time to find the app and it can hold way more programs than an oversized dock. I might install it if it's possible to decrease its size.
>OS X Style Dock that will make your Co-Workers Drool
I find beryl+emerald+gdesklets+gkrellm much cooler than a dock; I cannot believe how many people are missing out on these effects. - toliman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1its a pain, since the enlightenment "team" haven even bothered to put up a "given up, gone home for the day, here's what ive got so far" release for DR17 of enlightenment in over a year, neither have they sent it off to a few people to build a stable or even remotely complete version other than DR16 to the repositories to create .deb/ .ebuild / .rpm files for the common distro's.
given that linux is entirely fed by word of mouth in some ways due to the lacsadistic qualities of non-conformity, it definitely requires a propulsive momentum to help out, slapping the word alpha on the end and sending it out to the common people might just be enough to get a few excellent people to contribute code and not give it up as a lost cause. - TurtleBird, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This guys writes like a 8th grader. Seriously, bad writing...
- shakin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3"This is what I don't get about Linux. When something takes up a 3-4 paged tutorial on how to instal it, how could you recommend linux to your mom or a family member as a viable replacement for Windows? I just don't understand is all."
The tutorial was very verbose and included downloading and compiling the newest source code from its CVS repository. In that case the instructions are even more complicated on Windows and about the same on OS X. The first bit of instructions just said "add this software repository and install engage", but the writer stretched it out and used the command line instead of the GUI.
BTW, my mom does use Ubuntu. It's the first computer she's ever owned. I didn't install Windows for her because I didn't want to get phone calls every week asking why something doesn't work or why it's so slow. So far so good, and it's been 2 years. - searayman, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1actually the dock was on linux before mac...
- FriscoTony, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6Yo, check out the installation instructions...
They had me at "sudo apt-get"
-----------------------------------------------------------------
HOWTO Install:
Grab the dependencies:
“sudo apt-get install cvs autoconf automake1.7 gettext libtool libfreetype6-dev libjpeg62-dev libpng3-dev libtiff4-dev libungif4-dev libbz2-dev libltdl3-dev pkg-config libxine-dev libgtk1.2-dev build-essential flex bison byacc libxcursor-dev libcurl3-dev”
Get the Source for Engage:
“cd ~/ mkdir cvs
cd cvs
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous:@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/enlightenment login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous:@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/enlightenment co e17 misc”
Add the Enlightenment Foundation Libraries to your ld.so.conf file:
“sudo -s -H
echo “/usr/local/lib” >> /etc/ld.so.confexit”
Compile Libraries:
“cd ~/cvs/e17/libs/
./autogen.sh
make
sudo make install
sudo ldconfig”
cd ~/cvs”
Now Compile e_utils, examine, and Engage:
Unfortunately, you’ll have to compile these one by one. These files can be found under:
“/cvs/e17/apps/e_utils
/cvs/e17/apps/examine
/cvs/misc/engage”
Configuration:
Create directory for Engage:
“mkdir -p ~/.e/e/applications/all”
Make .order file:
“vi ~/.e/e/applications/engage/.order”
a Sample version can be found here - daftman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1tissue
- daftman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@defectds
Did you read about the fact that he said it was still unstable?
Same ***** happen when you install any unstable software on any platform.
I guess mom and dad users have to wait until it's hit the stable release so all they have to do is:
sudo apt-get engage
what's so hard about that?
if you don't get linux, then don't use linux. - jonvdveen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2This certainly can't be the best that Linux has to offer. This dock nowhere near approaches the refinement or beauty of the OS X dock. Frankly, the icons look horrible. They lack anti aliasing; the animation process does nothing to flatter them. Sorry, but this is not worthy to compete with the Mac dock in terms of appearances. Rocket Dock: yes. Engage dock: no.
- cope, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3i converted half of my office to linux :)
- jm9206755, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I believe the standalone version of the dock is also still under development. Once there is a stable version release it will probably be packaged and included in the repositories for major distributions. If you are a total noob to linux you probably have very little business installing unstable software to begin with.
- mash8591, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@REBOPPER
I find that Rocket Dock is much better : http://www.punksoftware.com/rocketdock - passdoubt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Not only is this kind of old, it wouldn't make anyone I know drool. It's pretty ugly actually. It's got potential though it looks like!
- Salin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2There's a reason why they call it D-E17. It's been under heavy development for at least 2 years. While engage does seem to meet the main features of the OSX dock, you could only get the feature enthusiasts/desktop environment ricers/OSX Wanna be-ers to go through the 5 layers of hell in order to get this compiled up and running decently. Wait till E17 is stabilized/finalized to start using this (though by the time that it does, other software will be out there to do the exact same thing)
