Shocking! - SpamDog, on 10/24/2009, -20/+117Not really that much of a decision:
if you need to run intensive windows apps like Autocad go Windows
if you need a cheap slick secure operating system that runs fast on not the best hardware go Ubuntu
if you want a slick secure operating system on pretty overpriced hardware go apple. - axm9505, on 10/24/2009, -5/+62Ubuntu 11.10 Fapping Frog
- abbathdoom, on 10/24/2009, -6/+61I love OMG Ubuntu as it fills an important void in Ubuntu news online. But man, the site loads soo slow with all the junk on it.

- tacojohn48, on 10/25/2009, -3/+25I think every year for the foreseeable future will be the year of Linux. It is used in so many devices. Also with google working on the chrome OS maybe Linux will get its' year of the desktop too.
- erkokite, on 10/25/2009, -4/+26From Gateway:
Core i5-750 Processor
8GB DDR3 Dual-Channel 1066MHz Memory
1TB 7200RPM SATA hard drive3
GeForce GTX 260 Graphics with 1792MB RAM
$1179
Then toss in a Hanns·G 28" monitor from Newegg for $300.
There you go, for under $1500 you have a computer with a better video card, monitor, and more ram. If you build from scratch, you can get even more performance for cheaper than that I'm sure. - jeremymccurdy, on 10/25/2009, -2/+22Every release is getting closer and closer to the "Idiot friendly Linux" distro, I can't wait to see how fine tuned Ubuntu will become in about five years time(if it's still around). The year of the Linux desktop is a constant joke, but Ubuntu is gradually working it's way toward being a genuine competitor.
- MeccaYdna, on 10/24/2009, -1/+20^ That's why he mentioned "intensive apps". But anyway, I agree with the OP. I'd use Ubuntu quite a bit more, if it weren't for engineering applications (some of which dont' work on anything other than windows). Some day...some day....

Hey look, I can post random computer specs too. Oh, what's that, this one's cheaper? I guess that's why you didn't mention it. - tidu, on 10/25/2009, -5/+22Overall though, Apple products cost more than competitors. Coming from a 2-year Macbook Pro user.
- SpamDog, on 10/24/2009, -2/+18I had never used linux in any fasion less than 6 months ago, and now I am running Mythbuntu as my primary media center and 3 of my 4 computers run Ubuntu. With the past couple of releases the learning curve for Ubuntu has rapidly decreased.
As far as compatibility issues, use Wine, and for major apps, like I said run windows. - tacojohn48, on 10/25/2009, -4/+19Anybody got a time machine so we can go back and make that call?
- eanbowman, on 10/24/2009, -0/+158.10? Um, Skype works in any version AFAIK.

(With the acceptance that I clearly have a surfeit of disposable time on my hands)
(maybe I should consider cleaning that off)
Ubuntu 10.10 - Manic Monkey
(will inexplicably work twice as fast on Mondays)
Ubuntu 11.04 - Neurotic Newt
(only works after gently stroking the mouse)
Ubuntu 11.10 - Officious Ocelot
(mimics windows in every conceivable way)
Ubuntu 12.04 - Pugnacious Parrot
(a slightly buggier maintenance release)
Ubuntu 12.10 - Quixotic Quahog
(will remove all passwords and forms of protection because they shouldn't be necessary)
Ubuntu 13.04 - Rambunctious Rottweiler
(will refuse to save homework files just prior to the due date)
Ubuntu 13.10 - Standard Seagull
(will consist of a theme upgrade only)
Ubuntu 14.04 - Terrifying Titmouse
(the default sound theme will be changed to something inconceivably annoying and a bug will keep the volume control permanently set at 100% while simultaneously preventing settings to be saved)
Ubuntu 14.10 - Undulating Urchin
(will revive and set as standard the wobbly windows function with the friction level set too high)
Ubuntu 15.04 - Vapid Vulture
(will set the default theme to look like amiga dos 3.1)
Ubuntu 15.10 - Wharrgarbl !!!
(Wharrgarbl)
Ubuntu 16.04 - Xenophobic Xenopus
(no longer boots at all)
Ubuntu 16.10 - Yodeling Yorkie
(I honestly just can't think of anything funnier than yodeling on it's own)
(perhaps that's because I lack imagination)
(kneel before)Ubuntu 17.04 - Zod
(All webpages lead to Hooston) - Nirac, on 10/25/2009, -0/+14You're one off.

If you want something like the iMac, that is one thing, but why? It is like getting a combo TV/DVD player, if once thing breaks the whole thing is *****. You can easily match the stats with normal PCs, and you are just going after a gimmick feature.
Now if you want to compare STANDARD (not specialty) like items, which is a reasonable comparison. Then compare the above with: http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MB871LL/A?mco= ...
Modify the parts how you wish.
---
For laptops:
Mac - http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MC118LL/A?mco= ...
newegg - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ...
Dell - http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/notebooks/laptop-st ...
---
In the future don't use bias comparing methods to justify your fanboyism. I personally prefer being able to build my own computer and switch out the parts easily. I have friends that actually need Macs for video and audio work, and other friends that need PCs for gaming, game/software development, and 3D rendering. Macs can't handle hard rendering, especially iMacs, they catch on fire. PCs don't have the amazing software that Macs do for video and audio production. The advantages Macs have are few for the normal user, especially given the price. - amoeba, on 10/25/2009, -0/+10welcome to digg

- eanbowman, on 10/24/2009, -1/+9How long has it been since you've tried? I mean an Ubuntu ISO is free to download. I'd at least try it on your machine to see if it works. You don't need to install anything to try. Just boot the ISO and mess around in a temporary environment.
I haven't seen issues at all with mobile Intel GMA 950s - as I have one in a laptop here right now and it seems fine.
Also, Dell sells laptops with Intel mobile adaptors with Ubuntu pre-installed. I'd assume those work fairly flawlessly. Those and the netbooks, which were originally Linux only but only started selling with Windows when MS started to want into the market.
So really, I think you probably haven't tried any flavour of Linux for a very long time. - silentdragoon, on 10/24/2009, -4/+12If you're installing the Netbook Remix on a Samsung NC10, or another Samsung netbook, there are instructions here:
http://williamjudd.com/2009/10/23/how-to-install-k ... - roebeet, on 10/25/2009, -1/+8To respond to a few of your remarks:
- Wireless. Works much better, now (my EEE netbook works out of the box, vs having to add drivers for the default XP OS). Granted, Windows 7 also works out of the box. I know that there's been alot of issues in the past, with wireless - very hit and miss.
- PDF's. Huh? That support has been around for a long time. And no need for the bloated Adobe Reader, either.
- Flash. Easy to install, via Medibuntu I believe. Still has issues crashing on occasion, I'll admit.
- Building your own PC. I started buying DELL's a few years ago, as I didn't want to be bothered building my own anymore. In retrospect, that was a mistake. DELL and HP's are cheap for a reason, and that reason is their hardware is generally crap.
Imo, Ubuntu really is as good as some people make it sound. Many reasons, but the main one for me is FREEDOM. Freedom to alter the distro as I see fit, and the freedom to use it as I see fit as well. With Windows / MacOS, there's a permeating feeling that you are being restricted to doing certain things - this is what you get with closed-source OS's.
But yes, you get more commercial apps / games / drivers in Windows, or even in MacOS. So, if you need that one critical app that doesn't work in Ubuntu, then you don't have much choice. - AngelBunny, on 10/25/2009, -4/+11I generally agree but you forgot about games for windows and the fact that apple does a stair step release setup which is different than its competitors. The first month a new mac comes out it is always cheaper or equal to in price as its competitors when comparing hardware 1 to 1 aka laptop hardware to laptop hardware and server hardware to server hardware not laptop to desktop or server to desktop. the problem is apple will have that product for around 2 years and during that time will rarely to never lower the price or up the system specs. so, for that 1 month out of 2 years apple is the better buy. if you compare a 2 year old mac being sold new to a 1 month old dell being sold new then of course the mac will cost more.
- Drizzit, on 10/25/2009, -5/+12No need to view this site folks. You get 120 screen shots of the same usual BS, this is the file explorer, this is the main loading screen, etc etc etc.
I wish Linux sites would post relevant content. The magazines are so much better, they have actual content. - MAGZine, on 10/25/2009, -3/+9Why the ***** would you buy an all-in-one PC? *****' retarded. Look at a regular rig, and every company will smash Apple to pieces.
Of course an "all-in-one PC' is going to cost more from Dell - look at the wide range of products they manufacture. If they only did All-in-Ones, then they would be a lot cheaper. (and you'd wouldn't have to get a new one every 6 months) - explodingzebras, on 10/25/2009, -2/+8I can't wait, only 4 days and counting!
the only wtf i got is:
Palimpsest Disk utility? what kind of name is that? - LostOverThere, on 10/25/2009, -1/+7They're just development names. The development name for 9.10 is Karmic Koala, while the real title for the final release is Ubuntu 9.10.

The monitor resolution isn't as good, but who needs more than 1080p. I couldn't select anything less than 8GB of RAM. Anyway, you stand corrected by about 500 bucks. - JMilton, on 10/24/2009, -8/+13Linux Nazis?
That sounded so retarded and hilarious, I had to digg you up. - Hiwnes, on 10/25/2009, -1/+6I'm just waiting for the official release to reformat my hard drive and dual boot 9.10 and Windows 7. Good times.
I think the whole Software Center idea is pretty interesting but I'm not digging the lame labels. Departments? Really? - tacojohn48, on 10/25/2009, -2/+7I would have gone with 2014. Microsoft is already working on Windows 8, so give that a few years of support and then Microsoft should move to a Unix based system like Apple did. That way they will have increased compatibility with the major operating systems.
/Don't think I actually believe what I wrote. - Sabin8, on 10/25/2009, -4/+9You forgot thousands after tens. Probably more than that actually.
- Sabin8, on 10/25/2009, -2/+7I'll give you that this article is ***** given that 9.10 is still in beta. But I don't see how you can say that Ubuntu is not relevant... I'm on Ubuntu 90% of the time only booting into Windows when I want to play video games, how you can claim that a OS that does virtually everything that Windows and OSX does, and some things faster I just don't understand.
- Sabin8, on 10/25/2009, -4/+9Sorry but I don't think they will make a idiot version any time soon.
