Hunger"
You do realize what we're giving them is more than just a laptop, it's a means to start an industry and to educate themselves. Industry means people getting paid, people doing work, people bringing home the bacon for themselves instead of having to take everyone's handouts. I'd say a "Linux Laptop", along with complete instructions on how to build them, both software and hardware, is a damned good early step towards solving at least these two problems. - bherenotthere, on 10/11/2007, -20/+57Yes, a linux laptop will free the world from:
Poverty
Hunger
Abuse
Homelessness
Genocide
...etc - schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -5/+31And some said it would never happen. More photos here:

http://news.com.com/2300-1041_3-6175025-1.html?part=rss&tag=6175025&subj=news - Narrator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25FYI, Uruguay is not a poor country at all and they don't have problems feeding people.
For all those people who complain about laptops not feeding people. Here are some of the things you can learn from a computer:
- Food preservation techniques
- Advanced Farming Techniques
- How to fix farm equipment when it breaks
- Ordering Seeds / Farm Equipment online
- Getting up-to-date food market prices.
- Buying insurance
- Getting loans to buy seeds
- Registering the ownership of your farm land
etc,etc, etc.
It seems sometimes that the tech crowd thinks food just shows up on supermarket shelves from some magic food machine somewhere. People have to grow it and farming well is pretty complicated. Education can help people farm better and grow more food and feed themselves. - noseeme, on 10/11/2007, -4/+29What does this have to do with Mark Shuttleworth? That's kind of like how people who are not very computer literate blame Bill Gates for their Windows PC getting a virus, or how Mac users blame Steve Jobs for the semen on their face.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+23In other news, 160 + children are now on myspace, and downloading porn on the OLPC.
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22"Can you imagine the amount of e-waste that is going to be generated by the millions of those laptops when they die?"
The OLPC is completely RoHS compliant, and pretty damn recyclable when you start looking at what they're actually made of. They had the foresight to think of this being a problem when the project began. - Steve95613, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21If you give a third world child bread, he will eat for a day.
But if you teach a third world child how to phish.... - Urusai, on 10/11/2007, -7/+26LOL U-R-GAY
- dnthomps, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19@Backlash - I know you are j/k, but really, Linux would be VERY easy to use if you have never been exposed to Windows or even Mac.
- noseeme, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Yeah, me too. I have them so much.
- noseeme, on 10/11/2007, -13/+30Now, instead of getting food for their hungry bellies, they can use ad-hoc WiFi networks to see videos of people putting food in their various orifices (AKA: The internet)!
Congratulations Uruguay! You have laptops now! You're frreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
Actually, I think the OLPC project is pretty cool. ***** food, anyway. - dnthomps, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15"Can you imagine the amount of e-waste that is going to be generated by the millions of those laptops when they die?"
It will not even come close to our usage... http://www.enviroblog.org/cell%20phones%20CJ.jpg

..great news about OLPC tho
...and i thought id been made to wear stupid-looking clothes as a kid .. - hadak, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12Rock the ***** on, Shuttleworth. I support this project.
This is how the wars should be fought. Make friends, not craters. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8It's as if a thousand voice cried out at once...a thousand noobs just entered the internets...
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8They don't have any internet access as of yet, the nation's telecom company hasn't set up a link to the school.
....but yeah, other than that I totally agree. - Gadren, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6It's great to see technology that can help change the world. But let's get all the naysayers' objections out of the way first:
"What about food/water/shelter?"
The OLPC will be going to those who already have basic physical needs taken care of, but need education to help them help themselves and rise out of poverty. Believe it or not, the world isn't divided into the rich 1st world, and 3rd world mud-dwellers.
"Why are these programmers wasting their time on this instead of X?"
Can you honestly say that all these developers would be doing some other kind of charity work? This isn't a zero-sum game; if the developers weren't doing the OLPC, in all likelihood they wouldn't be doing anything. This is a great way to mobilize programmers to make a difference. - nemoder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Microsoft offering $3 for their software is STILL more expensive than the software on the OLPC.
Not to mention you don't get to see how the software was built. - catbeller, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6All the yappers about feeding the poor: I assume you have all hopped on planes with some bags of groceries. No? Shut up.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6@noseeme: I don't think it's the case. OLPC only will go in countries who have solved their food problems and are trying to make an industry work a.k.a. developing countries, not 3rd world ones. I don't think people in Uruguay are dying from hunger or will it happen so anywhere near the future they just don't have 1 million gadgets, 10 PCs and 2 cars, like we have but in the basic necessities are just like us they have solved them, this doesn't make them hungry in a literal sense.
These people need education not food, my only complaint is that OLPC may not work in the end as this project is a gamble but apart from this its a move towards the right direction. If these people get a clue of how to make industries then everyone will gain, especially us by trading with them. If Negroponte's project work it may solve a lot more problems than any other "feed the poor" demonstrations and other such nonsense as it tries to deal with the problem in a lot more pragmatic way.... - Rhapsodys, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9I believe that the laptops are actually so cheap that if they used a copy of Windows instead of Linux the price of the thing would almost double.
- yeskia, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5When do I get mine?
- Backlash, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Excellent
- Sneakernets, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I know some kids in america that would love to have one of these....(me)
- Backlash, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Since they don't have the internet there yet the One Laptop Per Child project should have shipped them with some pr0n... I mean come on.
- fLUx1337, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Now those are the photos I've been waiting for! ;)
- eecue, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6The OLPC will change the world.
- microft, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I want one!!!
I just wanna hack it an put a proper Linux distribution on it. - eqtitan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Bravo XO. Now where can I buy a XO shirt to show my support?
- Haplo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Where have you been?
2007-04-24 - "Microsoft has just announced that it will offer an entry-level version of XP and Office, as well as Windows Live Mail and Math 3.0, for only 3 USD. Microsoft wants to make deals with governments to provide hardware with this software to students."
http://news.com.com/Microsoft+aims+to+reach+next+billion+PC+users/2100-1003_3-6177431.html?tag=nefd.top
Wouldn't be amazed if this entry-level version of XP somehow is going to work on the OLPC in the near future if the OLPC becomes a hit. And then it wouldn't be amazed if a lot of countries "upgrade" their OLPCs...
Let's hope I am wrong but living in Mexico has shown me that a lot of places run pirated versions of XP versus running Ubuntu. I ordered quite some time ago quite some free Ubuntu CDs and managed to hand out just one... - tybris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3and the comment of the day award goes to...
- dankCIA, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2i am glad to see the OLPC officially under way. despite the flaws and nay saying i'm happy to see people have the chance for a better education.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Myspace isn't that popular in South America.
Maybe they'll get addicted with Flash games, or fotologs... - specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@urusai: lol, dugg for the homer quote.
- afx1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2...school #25 is gonna be pretty pissed about this.
- themastersb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2What's with the Playstation buttons on it?
- aussieNickuss, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7I really like the idea of the OLPC and that kids in 3rd world countries will have access to computers, but I hope that the end-of-life of those lappies are treated responsibly. Can you imagine the amount of e-waste that is going to be generated by the millions of those laptops when they die?
- randal2k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2checking ebay now...... time to get a laptop.
OLPC is a joke, we offer to buy 2 to get 1, and they say no... well, let the poor kids have them,a nd then let the poor kids have my money that they can actually use. - andsegu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Been an uruguayan myself, this news brings warn feellings to my heart. I just would liked to have this expirience as a child. An for those who dont know in uruguay this is not a FOOD vs LAPTOP issue, since there is no hunger in this mostly middle class technology aware country.
GO FREE LAPTOPS
PD: I wander when there will be a college version of the OLPC - VirginMan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2He will phish entire life
- timo1023, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wait, if this thing can read eBooks, it actually might be worth buying...
- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@gr3i
"I suppose the only consolation is that if these are used in classrooms (particularly in rural areas or areas with very little & or expensive internet connections) that the wifi and networking functions of these OLPC's will probably remain largely used for their intended purpose. For the short term at least."
If they're taking them home at the end of the day (which they should because that enables them to learn far more than 1 lesson a day/week/whatever at school), then they're going to come across the narcissistic and pety reality that forms most people's lives. What would a 3rd world child's impression be of say, digg, where people ***** around all day every day arguing about which operating system, browser or vendor is better? Like it actually affects any aspect of our lives or makes a damns worth of difference to anything but ourselves. Really it's shameful, and I'm ashamed to be a part of it.
Schools in Australia, the US etc all block non-appropriate sites and OLPC should consider doing the same. Not just because the world outside of their world is so petty, vain and stupid, but also for their protection. They're literally putting 100's of thousands of unprepared, desperate for money kids on "the meat market". The first world educates their kids about internet predators and still manages to produce retards who fall for the crap pedophiles pull.
Give them wikipedia, the bbc and other news sites, other encyclopeias, government sites and educational sites, and let them adjust to the ideas that are presented, before they get to see just how ***** up the world really is.
"That said, combining this project with other projects such as the wifi motorcycle or the wifi bus could give the benefit of providing some of the better aspects of the internet that don't require high bandwidth (youtube etc)."
Yes definitely. Although it'd be pretty pointless on buses in Latin America ... the majority of roads aren't going to let you do much because of potholes and miles of unpaved, bumpy dirt.
@ catbeller - I live in a 3rd world country making 1st world wages for a billion dollar corporation I full time contract for. I tip generously, I pay my single parent maid some 5x the going rate, and when I'm travelling which is every other weekend I buy food for the crackaddicts and beggers who hound foreigners. - Rayonic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Very touching. Now, what's the over/under on how fast these things end up on eBay? Free laptops are neat, but $100-200 goes a long way in that part of the world.
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2There was/is a lot of disinformation in the media. OLPC will not run Windows any time soon, but some people spread those lies. See here:

http://blog.wired.com/monkeybites/2007/04/olpc_free_softw.html - fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Microsoft offering their software means I personally can fund an entire school worth of XP and Office software for a few hundred dollars. I wonder if they have some insane minimum-volume restriction or whether that's actually doable.
If OLPC didn't have a minimum 250,000 units then people like me, who are far from rich, could personally do something. Pick a school, buy them 20 or 30 computers. Essentially bringing philanthropy to the people who can't afford enough of it to make a difference because most charities piss it away on beaurocracy anyway. -
