- coderpunk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24I see nothing on that site that would indicate it is shutting down. What gives?
- TeqnoHaxor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Yeah me neither, I think it was a practical joke or something.
- socokoolaid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10You bunch of ungratefully bastards. Criticize people for allowing donations, well I criticize you for using free software Rather than purchasing softwares.
- tyme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8gharding: same reason the edubuntu, kubuntu, and xubuntu are distributions. So that users can get a main grouping of the programs they need/want for a specific task or a preferred DM right from the start, without having to go through and find all the packages they want and install them or remove stuff they don't need/want after installation. Basically, it gives them (more of) what they want from the get-go.
That being said, it appears that the Nubuntu site is still up...and there doesn't seem to be any "we're closing" message. Marketing ploy? - troon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9You mean "its". Bring on the anti-grammar-nazi flames!
- buffawhat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I don't see any hint of a shutdown... this is kinda lame
- trashlikeyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6When this story was first posted there WAS actually just a white screen with the "I quit etc etc..." message on it. Why it was removed I have no idea.
- kubudubudubuntu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7you just awnsered your own question..
".....and add packages related to security testing, and remove unneeded packages, such as Gnome, Openoffice.org, and Evolution"
see "distribution" ( it's just a collection of software, and some customization ) - joelito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7>Probably to save bandwidth, all I can hope is that someone in the community
>will bring it back from the dead with permission from the guy that made it.
Unless he added any propietary software of his own, I don't think there's any problem with distributing and maintaining nUBbuntu ISOs. Maybe removing trademarks or custom(copyrighted) artwork. - mindcrash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Maybe it's me... but i don't see any "hey... i'm quitting... so long and thanks for the fish" kinda message on nUbuntu's homepage?

- msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's a friggen donate button. No different than getting tips for doing good work. Yeah, they put it on their site in hopes to make some money from it, but they aren't explicitly charging you for software.
I like to think of donate buttons as ways for users to say "Please continue working on this project". However, at the end of it all...who would you donate to? The nUbuntu guys really aren't contributing much to the community. Anyone can make their own distro by tossing together some packages, and from what I can tell, nUbuntu doesn't offer anything but a few moments time saved from not having to download the packages yourself. But then there's people who actually write code or signigicantly improve something. Personally, I would rather give money to someone giving away their code than people repackaging someone else's gift. - mikechml, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://www.duggmirror.com/linux_unix/Nubuntu_Closes_it_s_doors/
It was meant to be closing down at the time of being dugg. - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yeah, I'm not seeing what's so special about this. Net install Ubuntu and add in these packages. Why is (was) this a distro?
- TheSeeker11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Don't worry troon, I was about to point out the very same error.
"It's" is only used as a contraction people! - johnathon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Aye, it looks like it isn't shutting down :S
- diggapleaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just to note: they pulled some very similar ***** a couple months ago as an april fool's joke saying that Canonical had shut them down for infringement. This may/may not be done in seriousness.
- socokoolaid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3same
- jacks0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it's temporarily...
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@tyme
the potential here is an unlimited amount of ubuntu distros. this is rediculous.
in the end it is just linux.
if ubuntu users/developers/admins/etc want to really customized their experience they need to setup a front end which allows users to simply select which GUI they want for their desktop then build it upon installation. but then you get into the idea of installing things, which is what is trying to be avoided? it is just some weird loop. or just include all windows managers and let the user pick on login. - diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3what is the big deal? it is linux with fluxbox.
- socokoolaid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Especialy cause their site has no mention of it. Not a plablicity stunt, just a bogus digg. Anyone can speculate why.
- bndocksnt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2^^ please teach this guy not to be such a candy ass.
candy ass = one who's ass is constructed primarily or entirely of candy
(proper noun) calande - tyme, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1diecastbeatdown: Yeah, you could get into an endless loop if you didn't have clear focus. But then, aren't linux distributions in general already in an endless loop? Don't get me wrong, I'm a linux user, but it's all about choice, and we do give people a lot of choice. I think Ubuntu off-springs (if I can call them that...) aren't doing anything that wasn't done before Ubuntu existed, they're just making it more obvious by their naming schemes.
In the end, it's about choice, and about making it easier for the user to get a standard set of useful packages for their purposes. Sure, you could get into the weird loop, but at the same time there is an advantage to having these options available. Especially when they have LiveCD's. - lwatcdr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Great way to get publicity. I would have never heard of it if not for this dig story.
- compotatoj, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2The rest of the site is still there for now.
http://www.nubuntu.org/downloads.php - n0xie, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Doesn't that make it simply Debian if you remove all the extra stuff?
- Odweaver, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Probably to save bandwidth, all I can hope is that someone in the community will bring it back from the dead with permission from the guy that made it.
I do have an ISO of it I downloaded on wednesday so I'm pretty up to date on it, so a torrent might be a possibility, but I don't know how the school servers would react to it. - Odweaver, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3I feel bad that the Nubuntu project has been closed, it was an awsome distrobution with a great UI.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Please teach this guy correct English and the difference between "its" and "it's".
Its, It's
its = possessive adjective (possesive form of the pronoun it): The crab had an unusual growth on its shell.
it's = contraction for it is or it has (in a verb phrase): It's still raining; it's been raining for three days. (Pronouns have apostrophes only when two words are being shortened into one.)
http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/g_spelhomo.html - urho, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0I think they're just trying to get more users... Lame.
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1I don't get what nUbuntu is...
"The main goal of nUbuntu is to create a distribution which is derived from the Ubuntu distribution, and add packages related to security testing, and remove unneeded packages, such as Gnome, Openoffice.org, and Evolution. nUbuntu is the result of an idea two people had to create a new distribution for the learning experience. Many people ask, "What makes it better than X?", or "Why should I use this over Y". Our answer to this question is, we do not think about whether people are using it or not. We are more concerned about the learning process. If you want to try something with a clean interface, fast, and an excellent range of programs please don't hesitate to download nUbuntu." - dc2447, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3sad news
- fak3r, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1I completely agree, when I see a new project I'm always turned off when it's website features a 'donate' button; it tells me that the project has come to fruition w/o the right reasons, and then you'll have people reporting bugs and the devs will get into this, it's not free to code, I need help paying my bills. Mezzo/SymphonyOS, I'm looking at you, and to a lesser extent, Daniel Robbins, the Gentoo guy; the distro rocked and got lots of attention, then he complained he wasn't making any money. Very strange, people have to live and make a living, but don't count on some open source project to put you into the Googlesphere.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2So why does he deface the site? Why can't he allow people to still download it....how stupid.
- CharlesDarwin, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1My time is too important to leave a comment.
- Archer1980, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2See, this is the funny part I've always expected from a lot of open source software companies. They get donations and such, but what happens when the donations stop? these people need to have real jobs so that they can generate real income. Open Source software just doesn't supply this is a consistent, beneficial fashion.
- Archer1980, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1exactly, so the way i see it, a lot of open source software is created by people with no lives, or little momma's boys that still live at home with there parents, or some are created by rich people a-la uBuntu, or some are created on the ad based program, a-la google.
But some do actually make it. Take FF for instance, it's free to download, but they make a LOT of money in the background that no one see's. I wonder where it all comes from?

What is Digg?
