- reallytoughguy, on 06/29/2009, -4/+75Awesome. Now I can conceivably stave off rebooting for years at a time and still be up-to-date with everything. This will be brilliant for my server. For desktop users, I guess it's just one less thing to annoy them. Good work!
- harlowsmonkeys, on 06/29/2009, -4/+62Good luck when an extended power outage takes down your server, and then it doesn't come back up, and you have to track down which update years ago made your server non-bootable.
- Nephersir7, on 06/29/2009, -6/+58Uptime: eternity
- virtualmode, on 06/29/2009, -3/+55get the .deb installer here: http://www.ksplice.com/uptrack/
- silentpl, on 06/29/2009, -17/+66Year 2016. Microsoft implements revolutionary "no-reboot after kernel update" system :)
- theodenking, on 06/29/2009, -4/+45Aren't we the pessimist?
- benbrooks101, on 06/29/2009, -5/+45A kernel update by Microsoft usually consists of charging $(/£)200+ and a format.
- x986123, on 06/29/2009, -6/+352016?? You mean 3000. Even then it locks up.
- DiscoUnderpants, on 06/29/2009, -7/+36Buried for anti-anti-MS fanboyism
- warp99, on 06/29/2009, -0/+27Ksplice actually keeps a detailed record of all patches for situations just like you spoke about:

It's a complete management system not just a patch tool. - JDRay, on 06/29/2009, -0/+25*sigh* And I still have to reboot my Mac every time there's an update to iTunes.
I generally prefer MacOS, but some things are just ridiculous. It's a @#$%! music player, for God's sake. - rakeshishere, on 06/29/2009, -3/+28And here in the Windows world, even a ***** browser update (IE) requires a reboot of the OS. Don't know why but my Firefox doesn't ask for such a thing
- or3n, on 06/29/2009, -2/+24sounds like you needed to install the proper video drivers.. :/
- frouse, on 06/30/2009, -0/+22OS X even requires a reboot to install compatibility with new digital cameras that come out.
- JohnFlux, on 06/29/2009, -3/+22That article is about replacing DLLs while they are in use. Windows can't do this because replacing the DLL while it is in use would mean that the program using the DLL would suddenly be running with the newer version.
Linux doesn't have this problem because if you replace a library, the programs that are still using it would keep on using the older version. The older version doesn't get actually deleted until every program using it has quit.
So Microsoft can't even solve this simple problem because of fundamental design flaws in Windows. This Ubuntu article is about a whole new level - changing the _kernel_ while it is running. - inactive, on 06/29/2009, -0/+17Adobe kills it by installing root kits that do...
- radanator2, on 06/29/2009, -6/+23Thank you for the .deb and the heads up.
- AmbushCommander, on 06/29/2009, -0/+16Credit where credit is due: this is thanks to the KSplice guys, not so much the Ubuntu developers. :-)
- AncientPC, on 06/30/2009, -2/+18Apple follows with the same thing 20 years later, and calls it a new invention that will change how consumers view a computer.
- ASFx, on 06/29/2009, -2/+15You don't need to be a fanboy of anything to hate Microsoft.
- 1053r, on 06/29/2009, -4/+16Only for Ubuntu for now, but if you happen to have already standardized around it like I have, this is a major win. Especially with my virtualized hosting. No more rebooting 20 images every time I need to upgrade the host kernel!
- chongli, on 06/29/2009, -3/+14RMS is not going to be happy.
The call must go out to create a GPL clone of this technology! - Moralogic, on 06/29/2009, -0/+10This news makes me realize I must explore Ubuntu. I wish a Wine like program for Windows was created for Mac, then I would never have a reason to own anything other than Ubuntu... Man, so many advantages with this OS... That is it, I am ordering another hard drive and dedicating it for Ubuntu.
- DaviDTC, on 06/30/2009, -2/+12He just did.
- redwallhp, on 06/30/2009, -2/+12Sadly, that "feature" reminds me of Internet Explorer. Why does a @#$%! web browser so tightly integrated with Windows that it can erase boot.ini when it's installed? (Yes, there have been cases...)
- RyeBrye, on 06/29/2009, -1/+10Sounds like it's a going to be a for-pay service?
- Vadi0, on 07/01/2009, -1/+10And patents it.
- sewje, on 06/29/2009, -1/+10I must be dumb or something but I installed this, then installed the updates available from this program, then proceeded to check for Ubuntu updates and it came back with some, so I installed them and then... Ubuntu ask me to....REBOOT!!! lol?
- Waiting2awake, on 06/29/2009, -0/+9seriously. I am more of a RH type of guy. I have tried and played with Ubuntu, but it just never "felt" right. However, this is a case of an amazing advancement that will eventually benefit all, all thanks to open source and the geniuses that are so thoughtful to give their time to make a better mousetrap.
I'm so happy I could grep - Mistuke, on 06/30/2009, -0/+9Here's a crazy though, maybe it's because IE is deeply rooted inside the os? and the ie rendering component is used by different softwares including thirdparty ones?
- YourNameHere1, on 06/30/2009, -0/+9I am wrong. Arch needs a reboot after a kernel upgrade. I am now revoking my geek card.
Damn I wish there was a delete option for comments. - BxBoy, on 06/29/2009, -4/+11Nothing wrong with a little reboot during off hours once in a while.
- PsychoBrat, on 06/30/2009, -1/+8bretkuhns: if you have a Windows box at work that's been up for months, the admin has *not* been applying security updates.
That said, I do agree that the "my uptime is bigger than yours" thing gets old very quickly. If anyone's relying on a single machine staying up in a production environment, then somebody's doing something horribly wrong. - Legoman513, on 06/29/2009, -0/+7foxit reader
- hashref, on 06/29/2009, -2/+9/facepalm
- AmbushCommander, on 06/29/2009, -0/+7KSplice is offering updates for the latest Ubuntu kernel for free. Companies who want to get updates for their own kernels will have to pay KSplice.
- AmbushCommander, on 06/29/2009, -0/+7You should try it if you don't think it works ;-) Or read the technical whitepaper.
- GalacticXenu, on 06/30/2009, -0/+7no, it's true, if you've ever seen the apple stories even the most retarded of comments is dugg up while anything remotely critical of apple or their high prices is dugg down. it's like a religion to them, mostly because digg is populated by teenage/college students that easily fall into "identity marketing" thinking they belong to something because they have an ipod or something...
- bretkuhns, on 06/29/2009, -2/+9I love Linux and all (have been using it full time on my desktop and laptop for 3 years), but what you just said really doesn't hold water. I have to use XP at work and a box I remote into for building production releases has been up and running for months. I prefer Linux and thank you for the effort to spread the word, but you can't run around with banter like that expecting people to give Linux a shot just because you've had 3 months of uptime, c'mon.
- radanator2, on 06/30/2009, -2/+8make me
- centran, on 06/29/2009, -1/+7@theodenking
Speaking from experience. No... no he is not. I have had several problems from not rebooting.
The best one was some update that made the kernel flip eth0 and eth1 around. It didn't poke it's head until a reboot and then I had to scramble to figure out why the server didn't connect back to the network. - AaronCo, on 06/29/2009, -4/+10Little value for a desktop distro. Prolly worth it for non-redundant servers tho.
The usefulness is entirely situation specific. - HavocXphere, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5Thats what they said about windows defrag.
- Leopards, on 06/30/2009, -1/+6Think I'll give this a pass on my desktop! I kind of like the secure feeling of getting my updates from the repositories and not third parties!!
- zer0mass, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5My Kubuntu laptop is only rebooted for updates (maybe not anymore) but I generally keep it in hibernation when not in use.
- Scramblor, on 06/30/2009, -2/+7If on Linux the old library is still in use, then what have you really patched? Your program won't use the new safe version until it is restarted. And if your program is the Kernel... well then it looks like you do have to reboot to get the changes.
There are ways that you can patch live running code. Check out the article below for the gory details of how it is done on Windows. I assume KSplice uses a similar method.
http://blogs.msdn.com/itgoestoeleven/archive/2008/ ...
While LinuxPwns article is about DLL's some of the underlying concepts still apply. Live patching code can easily add things like additional parameter verification, etc. but once you start messing around with structure/class/enum definitions you are setting yourself up for a world of hurt. If you take a look at KSplice website, they say some of the patches needed small modifications to be able to work - I would assume this to make the code more robust against issues in live version changes like the article talks about. - 0260, on 07/04/2009, -0/+5You can use RC1 until like next summer for free
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5This has been possible for a while now, just nobody made it real easy like this does.
- anshe, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5As a Desktop user, I turn my computer off to save power, so I don't think rebooting is too bad.
- nepidae, on 06/30/2009, -1/+6Well I thank the Ksplice guys as well! Companies that give back, especially groundbreaking tech like this are a large part of allowing technology to continue to advance at a fast pace.
