- moondowner, on 09/28/2008, -0/+3Greg Kroah-Hartman is only spreading hatred towards linux users instead of uniting them. And for what? For few bucks from Novell.
- insllvn, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Must all users contribute? I thought the point of GNU was for everyone in the world to have access to a free and open computer operating system.
Is canonical preventing you from working on the Linux kernel?
Is the kernel the only important part of the GNU/Linux OS?
My issue here is that a lot of the old guard seem to resent Ubuntu for doing what they never could, getting GNU/Linux into the mainstream (alright so maybe it isn't there yet, but can you seriously tell me Ubuntu hasn't gotten it closer than any previous distro). As long as the community only values kernel developers, we will continue to have the best kernel thumping away at the heart of an inferior OS. Usability, consistency, quality of user space programs; all these things and more canonical has contributed too. This is the nature of Open Source, everyone does what they can and we all benefit. Don't you think GNU/Linux could benefit from a bit of marketing? - insllvn, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1What if they compromised the integrity of GNU/Linux as free software by folding to the demands for tribute of an extortionist and abusive monopolist? Would that be worse?
Really, all I hear is "Look at me! Look at me! Oh please oh please look at me!" Do you want to work on the kernel of an OS that is freely distributed (and redistributed), open to review and peer editing and unencumbered by patents or corporate controls, or do you want to work on a hobbiest OS meant only for you and other programmers? - bruenig, on 09/29/2008, -1/+1False dichotomy is strangely worded. I want the OS to remain which is why I want people to contribute to the kernel. Contribution to the kernel is the essential starting point for everything. It is therefore the most important thing. Anyone can package software and drop down an iso. That is not a significant contribution.

What threat?
Go ahead and do the flavor test for yourself:
Burn Ubuntu ISO LiveCD>>>http://lug.mtu.edu/ubuntu-releases/hardy/ubuntu-8. ...
Burn OpenSuse ISO LiveCD>>>http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0/iso ...
Boot each one and mess around for at least an hour or so, perform similar tasks on each and then if you're really up for it and have a couple of spare boxes laying around, install each distro.
Document your own personal opinions, findings and post them here.
I think you'll find that Ubuntu has this dog by the collar. - bruenig, on 09/28/2008, -2/+1In that kernel devlopment is hands down and undeniably the most important aspect of GNU/Linux, it is important that people contribute to it. If people did what canonical does and just leech of it while doing some very superficial and easy packaging, then the OS would fall apart.
