- tsteele93, on 10/10/2007, -0/+26This is actually a BRILLIANT way to set up a web server. You will NEVER be fired. No one would ever look at that and think, "we'll just get someone else in here to take over and they'll figure that out with no downtime for us."
JOB SECURITY!!!- theone3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That would be the most awesome disgruntled resignation ever!
- andyduncan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10You'd think. A guy I know had an employee try something like that, built a mission-critical application that only he knew how to maintain, then tried to use it as leverage to get a raise. My friend fired him on the spot, just out of principle. I'd have done exactly the same thing.
- delaen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11So...how'd they maintain it after that? Or did they just let the business fall apart around them out of spite?
- msgyrd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3dalaen: maintenance is usually just bugfixes and feature additions. if it was already being used, the existing bugs were probably small, and new features can wait until someone else figures it out. If he built it purposefully so that it couldn't be figured out, that's sabotage/blackmail and you take him to court for damages.

- digitallysick, on 10/10/2007, -2/+158whatever works!
- JaYBrooks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13IF its a development system.. this is how they always end up looking... I remember having every thing zip tied and extra wires for future upgrades tied with them and it still ended up looking like this.. well maybe not that bad but similar.
- ShaneApex, on 10/10/2007, -6/+39The hell with that, i would totally swith 5 wires to see what happened.
- Magnj, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2it probably wouldn't matter
- pwnies, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8It's an AV rack, not a web server. So chances are you'd either just switch video feeds or isolate a few.
- thesoprano, on 10/31/2007, -7/+399Good to see MySpace is functional...

- krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -8/+2it's a network, most likely building internal. i'm left wondering whether the submitter just didn't know, or the submitter is trying (and failing) to impress us with his 1337 haX0r skilllz.
- Pinhedd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2would you run anything else on it?
- brokentone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Good call. Looks like video distribution and stuff. . . a lotta BNC and composite.

- MasterChief4134, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1haha, i wonder how many miles of wires there is there, and how hot that room gets.
- Salgat, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I'm more concerned about the massive capacitance and electric field generated by all those wires.
- caffeinelover, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hot from the bad cable management?
- LMaxey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Thats not a problem as long as they don't cross the streams
That would be bad
- OodlesOnoodles, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2I wonder how long it took to set that up.
- OsakaWilson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4It evolved into it's current condition over time.
- DarkN00b, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1That's what I was going to say. Messes like that evolve.
- lougoose, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I would guess not very long, cause they took no time to plan.

- mintshows, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19Isn't that a Super Nintendo there in the bottom-left?? :)
- evilpig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7no
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23it's breeding.
- pwnies, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The full rig is an AV rack, so chances are the things in the bottom left from the looks of them are DV tape players.
- mrlost117, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3anyone that guy pisses off has got their revenge on a silver platter.
- theshow, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1HOLY *****
- Butt3rs, on 10/10/2007, -3/+54true meaning to a "web" server...
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 10/10/2007, -14/+3But will it blend?
- Nchalada, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0I think that they tried blending something with a Blendtec Blender lol... What a mess!
- zodieman, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4I've seen some pretty bad setups in my times. Some would rival this one.
- Carroarmato0, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Should definatly checkout for wireless solutions....?

- wayne247, on 10/10/2007, -8/+82Congratulations to the submitter for automatically assuming that a picture of wires is a webserver.
The part on the right is a stack of similar devices's backplates, at an angle. It looks something like the other side of a wall of an elaborate audio/video managing room.
This is in no way connected to the internet. It's most likely a television station control room or something similar to that, a decade ago when everything had to be analog and running hundreds of cameras to, say, an Olympics event, meant thousands of coax cables to string together.
As to why they're just a mess? If it's a temporary event, this'll all be ripped out in a few days. As long as they're labeled and they have a stack of spare cables, they're fine.- bwtaha, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11dugg even though you're a dick, but you explained what it is to the best of your knowledge
- Shootfast, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3You're probably right, The video tapes room in the TV station I work for is currently being remodeled, and there are far more wires protruding from the various VTR's, tape decks, monitors and storage servers.
- decades, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Looks like our new guy set it up...
- tallguy240, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0I would fire the sys-admin immediately.
- MDrake, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Home of the Google Spiderbot.
- ledguitar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4How long would it take to fix it you switched two of the wires?
- boethius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12This picture is VERY old - at least 10 years. I've seen this picture numerous times over the years as an example of horrific wiring.
I also think it's highly probable this is not directly related to server hardware. It looks like it's probably related to audio/video patching. - mrpink.137, on 10/10/2007, -3/+651998 called. It wants its picture back.
- akira117, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Sysadmin's day FTW
- bpapa, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21This picture is so old that it may have well been Black & White.
- Felekar, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2You know, if you got fired from there, you could change a couple wires here and there, and noone would be the wiser.
In that tangle, you could even add something of your own, and it would never be seen. This is exactly why you need to keep your cables organized.
http://felekar.blogspot.com - ruley, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2"do not touch or trust any of these wires"
- stoikiometry, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17I have the urge to use it as a hammock.
- Neourotick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9it looks like my parents house when they try to hook up new technology
- satman33, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I'm pretty sure this is a cable company head end. Lots of satellite receivers, amplifiers, descramblers and video modulators. The one I used to work on for a local cable company looked almost that bad. ( I didn't build it, only serviced it...) Needless to say, it was a nightmare to trace any connections.
- masfenix, on 10/10/2007, -9/+0I think most web servers are like that. I mean I think googles servers are probably like that also.
www.fakebets.net - oleeid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Who broke into my House?
- TylerLavite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7is that a shop light hanging on the wires!
- bryanwilson08, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Yes, I believe it is...
- ChrisMR, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I for one welcome our flying server wire monster overlords.
- OathOfFealty, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Old as *****.
- pwnies, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's not a web server. It's an old AV rack. You can tell by the round connectors on the cables, which shows that they are component cables for video feeds and not ethernet cables.
- rodgy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2No cheese cake on Sysadmin Day for whoever did this mess!
- AeroSquid, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5i love how old ass pics like this are big news on digg. too many ***** noobs on this site anymore.
- DefaultGen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Too many ***** noobs on this site anymore indeed.
- zlam, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Hehe, if you're a sysadmin and want to make yourself indespensable (sp?), here's how you do it! Want a raise? Well, why not? :-)
- lougoose, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1if you can manage that, you deserve a raise
- lougoose, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1if you can manage that, you deserve a raise
- iscadrian, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Is Unavoidable don't touch the wires
- Dagreenman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1it's looks like venom stopped by.
- bwtaha, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Oh-Em-Gee, people that have never seen something from ten years ago because ten years ago we were going roller skating and taking girls to see movies so we could get that hand up the shirt, instead of sitting up till 4:30 drinking Bawls writing the html for wwujd.com. Don't be a dick, this picture is funny, the simple fact that that sign probably isn't necessary, if people want to think it's the Washington DC's email server when it's really a 1954 switchboard, LET THEM, dugg cause that sign is funny and i wanna know what the little lightbulb thingy floating there is
- pnmoore, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1In the past I worked at a telecom company that was in acquisition mode. I saw switch rooms for some of the companies we acquired that closely resembled this. We always laughed like crazy at the absurdity when we ran into something like that, knowing that thousands of customers' service was depending on "that"...
- peter337, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1buried, why is so much old crap hitting digg front page
- joeysum, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1And this, my friends, is what we call 5S!
- XxXKUL, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Its AOL in the 90s!!!
- BenWang, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'm expecting the "I've seen worse" and the "Pictures of worse" comments

- daxsymbiont, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"do not touch any of these wires, i'm a disorganized fool that can't be arsed to do it correctly".
