- meltingrobot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22*****, now I have to buy one. I said a couple of months ago that if they added Flash 9 support, I would buy it. Time to eat my words and find a home for my N770.
- JamesWilson, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20This little device is hot! wifi, skype, google talk + live video chat, gps, built on linux, cheaper than iphone
Me wants! - sarusa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Much better. The N800 has twice the RAM which makes all the difference in the world. Plus it has two SD slots, one internal and one external, so you can dedicate the internal one to a 256M swap card then use the external for real storage. I'm not sure the faster CPU (330 vs 250 mhz) is a huge deal. I still have to recode tv shows and anime episodes to watch them on the N800, so it doesn't fix that. But memory is no longer really a problem for me. I just love this thing to pieces - will be installing the new firmware tonight!
- Radar3D, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Probably should have said Skype and Flash 9 in the title to get people to see this. I flashed mine (went very quick). Now the fun part of reinstalling all my apps and hoping they still work!
- chippypanoz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7YouTube works., You have to wait for the video to download first. Then it works in what looks like a low-Q flash mode. Pretty usable though.
- ThoughtFix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Dual SD card slots - up to 16GB
- astyanax, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7What about all the folks who just bought 770's off woot? Where's the love? :)
- ldog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Where's the love for those of us that paid 400 bucks when the thing came out? Nokia has a "hacker edition" of IT2007 for the 770, but a real edition with skype would be nice.
- rudy23, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Question for 800 owners. How much better is the 800 than the 770 in terms of speed and performance? My 770 always seems to go low on memory at all the wrong times.
- Mach5, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4the archos is really just a fancy media player, the n800 is a full computer running a stripped down version of linux (debain to be exact). you cant install kismet on the archos :).
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Have they open sourced the proprietary modules yet? If not, having Linux on it isn't particularly useful.
- NewChar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Are YouTube videos still choppy on the N800 like they were when it was first released?
- hags, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Just a thought, you might want to blur out your cell phone number when you're actually making the call since you mentioned wanting to hide it...
- cmdrNacho, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5i don't know what proprietary modules your speaking of , but the amount of repositories available is amazing. I can start shell, drop bear ssh server, vnc, and get just about any other tools I need.
- ThoughtFix, on 10/11/2007, -12/+16Thanks for digging me!
- stmiller, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Check this out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPCQuiAi4yg - valkyries, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3go with the N800
- blackax, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4No problem Man, Just got done installing the update myself, Time to try out youtube :-P
- ldog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3On the 770, through the control panel you can set aside 64MB of your rsmmc to be a swap partition. Still not a ton more memory but it does seem to help when you have several browser windows open.
- JamesWilson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Didn't see anything about Skype or Google talk + live video on the N95. It does look sweet, but it has symbian OS and costs a lot more. Put linux on it and it would be a lot more valuable to me.
- cmdrNacho, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Any one on the fence on getting one ... I suggest after this update you get it. Its an amazing device. shell, ssh, vnc, browser, many media players, touch screen, SDHC, and skype make it that much better now. I prefer to keep my cell phone and this device seperate, since it is larger than a sidekick. But I am able to tether it to my cell phone's unlimited internet connection , and can use the N800 anywhere. The wi-fi, and bluetooth connectivity is awesome as well
- hungryJonJon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's great that VNCViewer also works flawlessly on these tablets so I can connect to my desktop/laptop.
- tbeseda, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Very useful. Thanks for the tip
- cmdrNacho, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Never needed a third party application to my knowledge, you can play them right in the opera browser.
- rudy23, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Thanks. I was all prepared to start hating mine even b4 I got it. But its incredibly handy around the house. streams music from My NAS and can also be used as a sonos type remote control.
- UbuntuX, on 10/11/2007, -1/+38GB sweet
- sensor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2No.
- OrangeTide, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I'm torn do I want to wait for a Neo 1973 or do I get an N800 today?
- Eric.S.Smith, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21) Keyboard: Bluetooth keyboard works well enough. USB keyboards won't work without some hacking of software and hardware.
3) Peripherals: Bluetooth GPS and Keyboard are about it for peripherals, as far as I know.
4) Ethernet: You want to plug in to a wired Ethernet network? Uhh, even if that were possible, it'd be kind of clumsy. This thing's the size of a calculator. - ldog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2cool. Digg that one up too.
Thoughtfix's blog is a great source of info on the 770 & N800 - Chordonblue, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I dunno. I've had my n800 for 6 months now. Only one or two crashes that I can recall. I think the extra memory is a HUGE help. It's still a little more sluggish than I'd like, but it does work as advertised.
- robbh66, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21) Bt Keyboards work fine, can't used wired ones.
2) This works fine on my 770, so I assume it works better on the 800. I think the N800 might have a server (but not sure)
3)GPS/BT keyboards are the main accessories, but i'm sure there are others. DVI input? It's a 4" screen dude.
4) Zero
5)Not sure about QT, no to WMP. The device is not a dedicated media player so it doesn't do audio and video well as a dedicated device. - mllive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2A few questions:
1) Has anyone attached a Hard Keyboard to it, (Probably a Thumb sized one), either via Wires or Blue Tooth? I suspect that I would prefer to have an hard keyboard for web browsing, Remote CPU control, etc.
2) I see that it has a VNC viewer, I assume that means that I can control a remote CPU, running VNC "export" but not control the Nokia from a remote computer.True? and if so, how well does it work?
3) Are there some peripherals for it, e.g. a DVI input, a GPS receiver, etc. so that I can use it as part of a more "capable" hardware system?
4) I may want to use it with a standard Ethernet network rather than a WiFi system. Any possibilities.
5) What about the proprietary Video systems. I note that there are QuickTime and WMP videos that I'd like to view?
Thanks. IT SOUNDS GREAT. - Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Flash 9? HOW?
I mean, last I heard Adobe was still only releasing Flash 9 for Windows (And I think Linux) Pc platforms and everyting else, including mobile platforms, was stuck with Flash 7?
Hmm, 8gig MicroSD support and Flash 9.... god how I wish my Cingular 8525 coudl get such an upgrade as well, if these things are even possible on it. - robbh66, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The n800 lacks USB host mode. Only the 770 can use USB devices.
- PRlME, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Grub your really missing the point buy what ever u want
- nofxjunkee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Hell, with enough cash you can get Adobe staff to come act out your Flash(tm) movies in real life.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Eh. No way those'll full Flash 9 tho'. Flash Lite 2 is what those use and that's only compatible up to Flash 7. Don't get me wrong, they're brilliant smartphones, but they're still S60 devices.
And also to JamesWilson's point, the N800 is ~$400, the N95 ~$800 and the E90 ~$1100. Big difference!
But yeah, it needs cellular access. - ThomasOkken, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2What's the word on the stability of the 800? I bought a 770 last year, but I ended up throwing it out, because I got sick of it crashing on me almost every time I used it -- and I only used the built-in apps. I downloaded the latest firmware update in January, but that didn't improve things.
It seems like a great device, but only if it actually works! - mixplate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i was watching youtube videos where the user had to copy paste the youtube address in uktube program or something like that, where it is downloaded to the player. i used to own the n800, and if i watched a youtube video, its choppy as heck. unwatchable....so now with this upgrade, is it watchable?
- ThoughtFix, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3They start out a little choppy but smooth out when downloading. Expect a video of the YouTube performance this evening. Stay tuned to TabletBlog.com ;)
- JamesWilson, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6If this actually had cell-phone capability it would be killer.
- ThoughtFix, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3There's a lot of good stuff for the 770. Check the 770 tag on tabletblog and join internettablettalk forums.
- Charbax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Nokia won't include HSDPA in this cause it would make the carriers angry..
And Nokia want's to sell the phones also, and rather not compete yet among the different devices from the N-series.
I think that the HSDPA would be a great feature for the N900. - gumpy5, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The downside for the 605 is that you'll have to buy the browser and flash plugins as separate plugins since they don't come preloaded, as well as mp4 and mpeg 1 and 2 playback. So to get the full functionality of the 605, you'll have to spend $80 extra for 4 plugins.
- djasmith, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Just bit the upgrade bullet and am surprised at how well my N800 is handling them there youtube vids. They're a little stuttery as the video buffers (until its fully loaded) but perfectly watchable. A massive improvement over the previous release. Someone needs to vidcap the N800 doing this, if they can (thoughtfix perhaps?), and show it to the world. Now if they only dropped video into either skype or google talk desktop . . .
Now to get back to more tablet shenanigans,It feels like the first time all over again :)
ttfn - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Ye of little faith. Nokia's product will be better than the iphone. They know the portable computing space well as we have seen with the 770 and 800. Will they use Microsoft Mobile or will they stay with the Linux base system?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1From here: https://www.fsfe.org/en/fellows/robertschuster/weblog/maemo_bug_1584_2nd_try

There are various portions of the N800 which are proprietary, which limit what you can do with the device. In this context, Linux is being marketed as a feature, but you don't have the freedom to use that feature as you would expect. They might as well use any proprietary OS. The effort that developers put into this platform is wasted, as it benefits only corporate interests, not the community. - blackax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1From what i hear you can load the video with google talk on the n800 so there is real video chat with google talk :-)
- Charbax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Is full screen flash video support as smooth as on the Archos 605 WiFi? http://www.archoslounge.net/5G-le-605-en-video.html (notice that the Archos starts youtube flash video playback instantly and smoothly at full screen)
