- oldhick, on 04/24/2008, -3/+40They're not really competing with the iPhone. The Nokia "Internet Tablets" are geared towards the open source community and people who want a platform that they can completely customize. I have two, the 770 and the 800. I'll probably get the 810 this summer. They are amazing little devices.
I have absolutely ZERO interest in an iPhone. - Zique, on 04/24/2008, -4/+26Haha, only chance Nokia has to keep competitive with iPhone? Nokia sells about million phones every day, Apple is hoping to sell 10 million iPhones in its first year. Nokia sells more phones in TWO WEEKS than Apple hopes to sell in a YEAR.
- borez, on 04/24/2008, -4/+26Because the industrial behemoth phone manufacturer that is Nokia has everything to fear from a company that's made 1 (one) phone.
- diggrim, on 04/24/2008, -0/+20it's an awesome tablet...QT would be nice...it already is Debian based so Ubuntu shouldn't be much
- inactive, on 04/24/2008, -2/+21ubuntu and nokia = win
- TheRealToma, on 04/24/2008, -1/+15Pleeeeeease support the 770. It keeps getting skipped by alot of people/companies but its still great and works just fine.
- AXNJAXN, on 04/24/2008, -0/+10It's already had flash for a long time.
- als153, on 04/24/2008, -0/+9Qt is a toolkit for developing cross-platform applications in C++. It has really nice libraries for GUI development.
http://trolltech.com/products/qt - r3bol, on 04/24/2008, -0/+9It has Flash 9, unlike the phones that use Flash lite.
- FDL1, on 04/24/2008, -0/+8Good thing the N-Series tablets aren't phones.
- r3bol, on 04/24/2008, -0/+7I'm glad there is now a completely open alternative for users of this device. It will help Nokia compete with the MIDs about to be released in the near future.
- rockwithme000, on 04/24/2008, -0/+7I have a n800 and all I have to say is:
EPIC WIN - Gavagai80, on 04/24/2008, -0/+7Agreed, the more corporate developers the better the OS. That's why Linux (developed by IBM, Novell, Red Hat, Nokia, et all) is so much better than Windows and OS X (only developed by one corporation each).
- Panda200x, on 04/24/2008, -1/+8***** Fantastic.
- spiffytech, on 04/24/2008, -0/+6QT is a GUI development enviromnent most famously used to develop Linux's KDE and the Qtopia interface for embedded/mobile devices.
- r3bol, on 04/24/2008, -0/+5This is a mobile internet device, not a phone. There is no SIM card.
- danjwray, on 04/25/2008, -0/+4***** YoU
- 0150r, on 04/24/2008, -0/+4If they can get ubuntu working well, I will be getting a n810 instead of an eeepc or eeepc clone.
- fyanardi, on 04/24/2008, -1/+5"Qt" is Trolltech's product, a cross platform GUI toolkit. "QT" is QuickTime.
- nfinity8, on 04/24/2008, -0/+4No, they mean the Qt toolkit -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qt_(toolkit)
- kahrn, on 04/24/2008, -0/+4What an earth are you talking about? Phones are not given away for free. Providers may offer deals appearing to give you the phone for free but the phone manufacturer will still make money from this. Phone companies like Nokia are able to support a broader audience too - a phone that is quite literally a phone, or a phone with more features, or pda like phones.
If you think the iPhone is in any way great, you should take a visit to the UK. The iphone has been rejected and we're a nation that has _more_ than one phone per inhabitant. I don't know anyone WITHOUT a mobile phone -- and I do not know anyone with an iPhone. I also know people that work for T-Mobile, and they prefer other phones. I even know an apple fanatic and he prefers the new LG phone.
The iPhone is for those that follow Apple, and not much more. It'll never endanger the market share of companies like Nokia or Motorola -- and I don't think apple even intend to do this. - motang, on 04/24/2008, -0/+4Good news, QT is excellent. Oh here is more info on Ubuntu Mobile: http://www.ubuntu.com/products/mobile
- smorg, on 04/24/2008, -0/+3Large parts of Maemo are closed; this has been an oft-discussed annoyance for 3rd party devs. The fact that they're bringing Qt to Maemo doesn't mean that they'll open source the many closed parts of the existing OS. Nokia's sponsorship of the Ubuntu ARM port is encouraging, but there's no solid indication that they'll replace Maemo with Ubuntu. We can only hope.
- newwatch51, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3Do you know what you're talking about?
- starquake, on 04/24/2008, -0/+3Your comment bores me
- beermad, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2Perhaps because you're too thick to even spell "too" right?
- wildmXranat, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2Nokia and Ubuntu will continue to work together on Ubuntu's mobile port.. look below
http://www.ubuntu.com/products/mobile - michaelkbrandow, on 04/24/2008, -1/+3Yeah if you squint while punching yourself in the face and flicking the lights on and off, you're right!
- oldhick, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2I don't have the 810 yet. So you'd recommend avoiding the 810 and sticking with the 800?
- balazsbela, on 04/24/2008, -2/+4Nominated for the most douchebag comment of the week. Congratulations, you've got my vote.
- cquilliam, on 04/24/2008, -0/+2That was my first thought as well, but I think it would be nice to keep the device separate from my phone, it would just be more to drain the battery.
- redxxx, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Right. I picked one up a while back and was disappointed. I like the platform and there is plenty of support and a good community, but 810 is over priced for the features. The GPS takes a very long time to sync up and the keyboard is ok, but still not great if you want to type a significant amount.
I just don't think it is worth the extra cash, when you can get external stuff for less that does the same stuff, and you can have more storage space(without having to worry about the internal flash dying eventually and not being replaceable). So yeah, I'd stick with the 800. - danjwray, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1?
- inactive, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1The worlds highest selling gadget ever is not from Sony or apple. its was nokia with their 1100 series phone that sold close to 150million units. the only thing close to it is the playstation.2
- mgrest, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1You write as though the Nokia 1100 has been discontinued; that's far from correct. They have actually sold over 200 million of these phones and they continue to be a big, big seller in the developing nations.
Also, Nokia has now sold over one billion phones in total; the one billionth being a 1100 sold in Nigeria. :) - jjed824, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Sure, but there are plenty of things that millions of intelligent guys in networked garages can do better than a large corporation. Such as make an OS.
- newwatch51, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Meh, I wouldn't want that on an internet tablet. Maybe they'll make a phone based off it, the reverse of how Apple based the iPod Touch off the iPhone.
- Gavagai80, on 04/24/2008, -1/+2Completely open? Erm, what wasn't open about maemo before? All this means is we can use Qt programs in addition to the GTK ones we've been running.
- r3bol, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1It will help you jack off
- mailbox01, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Give it cellular capabilities and it will be a great Smartphone!
- tangential, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1We already have a port of qtopia to nokia internet tablets over here: http://qtopia.net/modules/devices/
The only difference is we don't have ubuntu, it's a homebrewed linux set, but, it's fully open, and a lot of fun to work with.
To those looking to check this out already, go rank, join the forums, get the code, be active! - tangential, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1That's because it's based on GTK :) Wait until nokia finishes this project, or hell, head over and grab a binary of qt already ported, and go wild.
http://qtopia.net/modules/devices/ - TheRohan, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1Good story.. Thx. You may wanna check this too-

Rohan - tangential, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1http://qtopia.net/modules/devices/nokia.php
- tangential, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1The A1200 is based upon motorolla's customisation of qtopia 2, so theoretically it should be possible to reflash it. The OpenEZX project should have some information on it.
- absurdist, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Only anal, and only as long as you're the bottom.
- AICkieran, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Things may change for the iPhone but currently especially in the UK as pointed out above, it's nothing more than a gimmick.
Apple came into the UK and expected way too much money (more than we are used to on an expensive contract, phones are usually free at that level contract, or very cheap), gave crap service (EDGE had 30% UK coverage last time I looked, and hotspots does NOT make up for it) crippled the phone (No MMS? Welcome to 2000, no A2DP profile...on a multimedia device? WHY?).
The exchange support is a good addition and will probably make it have a little more influence in the corporate world, however, I doubt it, as much as I dislike Blackberry, most companies have already deployed Blackberrys with BES. Things may change when the SDK is released and the hardware is updated (3G, kthx) but unless Apple actually decide to stop trying to rape people for it, decide what their market is (What do you want Apple? Kids who want to be trendy or business customers?) it will continue the way it is.
In technical terms the iPhone is a joke, especially in the UK I will however admit, Apple did the software right (well, when the SDK gets here). - everthonVS, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1what about Motorola A1200 (aka Motoming)? it would be reeeeealy nice if I could get Ubuntu Mobile running on it...
- Alucard90, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Actually if someone was to get a mobile broadband card to work with it, it is quite a possibility since the Nokia tablets already have Skype.
