- atdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We need less distributions? Why exactly? People that complain that there are too many distributions don't have a clue what Linux is all about.
I don't need Linux to beat Windows or Mac, all I need is to work fine for me -- that's why is very good to have many distros so I can choose from. All the distros are getting better those that don't get better will disappear. Try any of the distro on top 10 at http://www.distrowatch.com they are all pretty good -- however you'll find one that fits better your needs/preferences/ideology/etc. - chieffy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree with you... to an extent. We do need an uber Linux, and I hope ubuntu is it (just because it seems to be getting there anyway).
However, there are many who seem to be opposed to Ubuntu because of the "hype" that surrounds it. And, while this is happening, people need alternatives. This article presents the basics on how to set yourself up on one of those alternatives. - Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's exactly the problem with Linux, there are so many distributions. There are so many arcticles here on digg which titles are along the lines "Why not try x,y,z linux distro?" which in the least confuses one who wants to make a leap. If one distro won't become the "uber" one then don't expect this Linux mania to take off ever. Bill has no opponents right now (let's hope Ubuntu will make one).
