No more "Fedora Core" Linux
linux-watch.com — Red Hat's engineer and Fedora Project board member, Bill Nottingham, announced on the Fedora developer's list on Jan. 4 that, "There will be no more releases of Fedora Core or Fedora Extras." Instead, Core and Extras will be merged together.

- justinjacobs, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12Sounds good. I'm always in favor of making things simple, and Fedora is my 2nd favorite Linux distribution (Ubuntu's my #1 as of now).
- devnill, on 10/12/2007, -23/+16i don't get what is so great with Ubuntu. IMO, it is very bloated and has 5 tools for every task. Personally i like a bootstrapped Gentoo install-- it is insanely fast, and is optimized for the system its built on. Slackware is also nice if you don't want to wait for the system to compile every package.
- exsst, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11I'm on the other side of the table, ubuntu is my laptops OS and it's been nothing but fun to use.
Actually, I was thinking about this lastnight, ubuntu has been so user friendly that it feels like windows. I rarely go into the terminal and I often just was my laptop to be fast and reliable, and that's what it does (with the added extra of awesome linux apps, like Kopete, Evolution mail, Synaptic package manager, Text editor and Ktorrent just to name a few.) - nblsavage, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17@devnil, because some people just want their OS to work without futzing with it. I'm not saying Gentoo isn't a good distro but it is more for the tinkerers.
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13We can go on and on talking about personal stories.
Tried installing Xubuntu on a computer yesterday - for the life of me can't figure out why the install craps out.
Gentoo, however, worked great.
That's the beauty of Linux. Options. - pwill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I agree. This is very good. The reason I didn't use Fedora before is because packages in the Core and Extras repositories were often incompatible, and I had to build from source way too often.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Fedora is insanely good about detecting and configuring hardware correctly. It even puts Ubuntu (and other Debian-based distros) to shame in this field. Fedora's general theme (default look, window manager and icons) look 10x better than Ubuntu's brown-n-orange theme. There are other RPM-based distros (including SuSE and Mandirva) but Fedora is the daddy of them all, with Redhat being the grand-daddy.
However, it is very slow to update and install apps, since YUM updates the package list every time its run and is painfully slow each time it does this. It also has way less packages than APT. Fedora use to be the king of desktop distros and community support was big, and still is a respectable size with fan faqs and pages, but Ubuntu's community seems much bigger now. Fedora ships on multiple CDs or one DVD, whereas Ubuntu only requires one CD. YUM is about the worst (and only bad thing) I can say about Fedora.
Ubuntu is better because... well, I can't think of any reason other than APT having more applications and being faster, however Debian originated APT and has even more in its repository than Ubuntu. As for Ubuntu vs Debian... perhaps the only thing Ubuntu has over Debian is that its packages are updated more often than Debian's. - Simon80, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Gentoo is not "insanely fast". The very most you can claim is the ability to customize your CFLAGS, which doesn't necessarily speed things up relative to -O2, and the lack of bloat in the default install, which is very minimal.
- AMCer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I tried FC1 and FC2 and couldn't get the damned OSes to install. I tried Ubuntu, it sucked. I keep coming back to Slack!
Good 'ole scary-because-it's-a-text-installer Slackware works every time for me and it's really NOT THAT HARD to install or use. All those others, bloated and half the time the GUI tools don't work right.
The lack of a COMPLETE 64bit Slack is my only complaint, yes, I know SlamD exists but, it doesn't install/work as well as 32bit Slackware. - TOTALineptitude, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3"Fedora is my 2nd favorite Linux distribution (Ubuntu's my #1 as of now)."
ubuntu = ***** distro that only its fanboys care about.
FC6 runs circles around it.

What is bloated about ubuntu?? I look through the default install and see 1 or 2 good apps for any given task...
Maybe you mean Suse?? that would be true then. - awsoma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@TOTALineptitude
you sound like a fanboy to me...
- desertcamel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+67That's one heck of a misleading, sensationalist title.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yes, I don't like the title either. It had me confused when I read this in 'feed mode'. The dropping of "Core" was announced last month and unification of "Extras" and "Core" is something which someone submitted to Digg last night... a link to the mailing list.
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2007-January/msg00091.html - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah, that title is not cool. I thought they were killing the Fedora project for a second there. I was gonna freak out.
But combining the Fedora's sounds like a good idea to me. So now it's just Fedora, eh? I like, I like. Can't wait for Fedora 7 then... - fenris6644, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Marked the article as inaccurate for misleading title.
- postaldave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3buried down for that very reason.
- deviceguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Zeesh... get over it! Headlines, after all, are the poetry of news journalism, whereas the lede (summary paragraphs) and body of the story are its prose. In this case the headline also contained a strong hint that something semantic was happening (i.e. changing the name, not the thing) by showing "Fedora Core" in quotes; and the lede was totally clear what had taken place (i.e. merging of Core and Extras).
- ahughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sounds good to me. Fedora has been my favourite Linux Distro for a while now. Tried Ubuntu, Suse, Sco, Gentoo, Mandrake, even had a bout with Red Hat a long time ago. I have settled on Fedora as it is the one that takes easiest to my hardware setup. However, every time a new distro comes out or an existing one gets a major update, I always review my priorities and decide whether to ignore it or try it. Keep up the good work RH Inc.
- Halifax1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I thought from the title it meant no more Fedora Core to be developed and/or released. Nice way of misleading everyone.
- wafflez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4hmm, this may be a bit off topic, but i am aware of a lot of linux junkies on digg, so i thought i would ask: which version should i install on my ps3, I already put yellow dog(no wifi drivers unfortunately), and I've seen many people install fedora core 6 on their ps3s. any hints as to the differences, and which one would be considered 'better'?
- Halifax1, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1Don't put any Linux on it. Sell that piece of garbage.
Are you new to digg? If so you should realize it's not good to say you have a PS3 or favor it in any way. Everyone knows us digg members love the Wii and hate PS3. - exsst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As far as I know, the Core processor turned out to be not like the usual 'core' processors in high end machines - making the PS3 not so good to buy for linux distros.
Also, all of the graphics (GUI) on PS3 under linux is computed by the CPU, which is a major trade off if you're heading for a high end machine.
Best bet is stick with yellow dog linux, hopefully someone will make a hack and enable the graphics unit to come into play... as it stands now, it's about as fast as a 1.2ghz mac. - Spr0k3t, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2...
- gameforge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Halifax1
Coming from someone who loathes Sony and won't get a PS3 until they're sub $200 on ebay... why don't you let "us digg members" speak for ourselves, k? I don't "love" the Wii either... though I may actually buy one new sometime.
Presume that PS3 owners bought their PS3's because they wanted one, and don't need you (who has apparently never owned a PS3) to give them your infinite game console wisdom. Jerk. - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ubuntu and Debian are available in PowerPC form (which works on PS3), if you'd like to try an APT-based distro instead of an RPM-based distro like YellowDog or Fedora. The APT-based distributions tend to perform better than RPM-based when hardware is limited, and let's face it... the PS3 is quite limited when used as a general computing machine.
- popltree2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Halifax1
I don't think we hate the PS3. It is a great console. I think we hate a) the price point and b) Sony as a company.
- Halifax1, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1Don't put any Linux on it. Sell that piece of garbage.
- wafflez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ Halifax (didin't click reply by accident)
>_> no need to be hostile...and i don't want to get into a fanboy debate (I'm not one >_>, had an n64, not a ps1. and have a ps2 and ps3...), it was a christmas present from my dad, can someone just tell me which version is better?- exsst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hit reply next time, and yes, this guy is new to digg - give him a break.
I've mentioned a few things above which are relevant, and no, a different distro will not make much of a difference with your PS3. - Halifax1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Haha, I was only joking around. I apologize.
I wouldn't know much about Linux on PS3, so somebody help him out. - 98acura, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1ok, this is not a forum.. it is a social bookmarking site.. You post comments about the topic at hand.. Not ask questions and wait for responses.. If you need help goto that little website called google, and do a ***** search for linux on ps3...
- exsst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hit reply next time, and yes, this guy is new to digg - give him a break.
- digitallysick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2fedora is nice, you can find rpms easy, and just download, install, like exe's i don't see enough .deb out there, and sometimes alien takes forever, or wont work 100%
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1RPMs are easy to find on the internet outside of the YUM repository since it is quite small, however you won't find many DEBs because they are already included in the repository for use with APT. Just be sure to enable the Universe/Multiverse (Ubuntu) or Testing/Non-Free/Etc (Debian) repositories.
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I have been using fedora core since it was redhat 7.3... But I tried ubuntu last week and it won me over for a desktop platform. It plays nice with proprietary graphics drivers which is a huge plus for me. Plus the package manager uses debian and I found it a bit more robust than rpm+yum. Just plop in your ubuntu disk and the package manager shows up with all the packages from the CD listed. Dependency checking seemed nicer. I wish fedora core luck, I think that the choices we have for desktop linux make linux a great environment. The market will correct things and the winner(s) will rise to the top.
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ah what a complete shocker. Comments praising Gentoo are in the negatives, while comments praising Ubuntu are in the positives.
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1But what will Freddy Crugar wear?
- consonance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Probably clothes.
- vossman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Fedora Core will be merged with Fedora Extras"
I hope this doesn't mean we will have to download 7 DVDs or 49 CDs to install FC7 now.- uhdean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No crap. Talk about bloat. How about a 1 Live CD with an installer...
- gameforge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So Fedora doesn't have Internet repositories like Gentoo or Ubuntu and the like?
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You can install fedora over the network but it's not straight forward. You can point it to an NFS, HTTP or FTP repository and it will download everything over the network.
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't worry people, this might as well just be as simple as a name change.
- Ssullivan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4what a crappy title
- Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I didn't even know there were two Fedora's (or more?), thought the name was simply Fedora Core, lol I haven't used it in over 3 years...
The title really shocked me though, I thought Fedora was getting canned :O - Youssif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We need it simple .. we need it easy : Make it 1 (or up to 3, but no more) CDs and move the rest to repos !
Thats, must be added to fedora features list ! - 0KonTroL0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, the title is misleading.
