No Thanks MacBook Air, Linux is working just fine for me.
maximonline.com — The MacBook Air is all the rage, but for some of us, the Eee is a much better fit. And by some of us, I mean everyone who is not a spoiled college student.

- benanzo, on 01/17/2008, -13/+11I'm especially keen to agree with the article writer's comment about the "Douche Factor." ..and he was definitely right about it being a fashion accessory, not a serious consumer portable. 1) Too expensive (Yes, Toshiba and Sony's are too.) 2) It's *thin* but not small. So is it really an ultra-portable? or just a psuedo sub-notebook? or neither? 3) I don't like assholes, and many many of them are going to be carrying this thing into the cafe on weekday mornings asking me if they can leech off my DVD drive so they can look at the photo disc of their boss' family vacation so they'll have some nice talking points at the water cooler when they get to the office. You see, they like to lick butthole. And nothing licks butthole better than commending your boss for having a great/beautiful/happy family. Assholes.
- drocha184, on 01/17/2008, -2/+2Sucks to be poor, eh?
- benanzo, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Yes.
- schestowitz, on 01/17/2008, -5/+10It is actually said by experts in the UK that mobiles have become a fashion accessory. This characterization certainly applies to many Apple gadgets too.
- UKsHaDoW, on 01/17/2008, -0/+5Its been like that for a long long time. Why do you think people who have no real use for the features buy expensive phones they really don't need. All my phones have been top of the line, but all i really use them for is callling and texting.
- ghostrunnerdig, on 01/17/2008, -1/+10The main point, though, is that the Air is simply too pricey yet lacking in features to be a primary computer. At best, it's a supplement to a desktop. And if that desktop is a Mac...well, that's another $1000 on top of the $1800 for the Air.
- clak, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2"Pricey" is a relative term. What's pricey to someone working at McDonalds and someone working at Merrill Lynch and commuting on a train 4 hours a day, is completely different.
- coheedcollapse, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1No, actually, when I use the word "pricey" I'm talking about the amount of money you spend in relation to what you can spend on something that does the same job. Like how a $200 pair of jeans is pricey compared to the $15 pair that you could get from Old Navy. They both cover your damn ass. Just like an Air will do your word processing and web browsing for $1800 and a cheap laptop would also do your word processing and web browsing for $300.

- ruiacp, on 01/17/2008, -6/+4It will be the same as iPhone: a big WOW effect and a lot of sales, but will not be the best option at all.
An example of WOW, the gestures: it's a big innovation and cool to, but is it useful? Maybe not. You can do the same with keyboard shortcuts, the learning curve is the same, with the advantage that you may already know those shortcuts in your favorite photo viewer. Other issue is that gestures may be 100% recognized, but if you press the right keys it will do what you want. But it will be better than using the pad as a mouse to do those tasks, maybe the target of gestures is mouse addicts.
I believe that in the war of media formats, Apple is trying to put download media in the fight of Bluray vs HD DVD and the Macbook Air is another card they are playing to win. In a wireless PC who will buy media in a physical support? If it becomes a popular notebook, the iTunes sales will boost.
Most consumers that will make the option to buy an apple notebook will buy Macbook or Macbook pro, Macbook Air will be for those who want to have the "popular notebook" instead of a good "price/quality relation apple notebook".
Its good to be a GNU/Linux enthusiast and immune to the new overpriced good looking gadget.- drocha184, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1Sucks to be poor, eh?
- clak, on 01/17/2008, -2/+3Wow. A MacBook Air topic. How rare. Between all the "World Peace" and "Save the Whales" themed topics, I just assumed no one would have time for it.
- deadbaby, on 01/17/2008, -4/+3They're incredibly different products. In terms of functionality I think comparing the EEE PC to the iPhone or Touch is more valid. Due to the slow speed of the EEE I think it's most practical use would be light web browsing & e-mail. The MBA is a full fledged, powerful, modern laptop that can be used for some high end stuff (video editing, sound editing, etc)
- clak, on 01/17/2008, -1/+3I like the MacBook Air and I'm an Apple fanboy, but come on, no one will use it for editing. First of all, it doesn't have firewire and second of all, you need lots of HD space to edit video. The MacBook Air is for people who travel a whole lot and need basic word processing and internet access.
- AzureRise, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3EEE PC is capable of running some high end games.

I think running UT2004 without any lag is great for a 400 dollar laptop.- almostadesigner, on 01/17/2008, -1/+0So can a macbook.
- yetAnotherCroc, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Yes but not for $400
- almostadesigner, on 01/17/2008, -1/+0So can a macbook.
- clak, on 01/17/2008, -1/+2Was anyone else distracted by the Maxim girl while reading this article? Hoochie Momma!
- nitesoulja, on 01/17/2008, -0/+0it was Lous griffin for me o.0
- Cannon13, on 01/17/2008, -1/+6If everyone submitted an article telling us why they aren't buying a Macbook Air, then Digg would be clog-
Oh. Oh wait...- clak, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1Really. Digg is going to need a section exclusively for people who want to explain why they don't want a MacBook Air. Geez.
- eridius, on 01/17/2008, -5/+8I find it utterly ridiculous how everybody who doesn't want one seems to think that just because it's not a good laptop for them means it's not a good laptop for anyone. Why can't you wrap your heads around the concept that maybe Apple didn't design this for you? How about you all just shut up about what you don't like about it, and let everybody get on with their lives? I'm not going to buy one, but I recognize that there are many people for whom this computer makes sense.
- dood, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1There is probably some heavily pro-Apple forum you could visit, where you could read articles from people, describing how the MacBook Air is perfect for them in every way. Or, you know, you could accept that people might express negative (or positive?) opinions in forums such as this one.
- Redemption289, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Makes sense for people with way too much money. Notebook manufacturers get bad press all the time. I think fanboy shock is setting in because their beloved apple got a luke warm reception instead of "wow this is the best product invented in years". Why shouldn't he post it? Its not like it hurts you any. If you don't want to read about it then just... you know... don't read the article. I don't go search for "APPLE IS GREAT OMGZORZ" articles and post about how wrong they are.
- Shiftgood, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1yah... uhhh.. this is like the 235th story to come thru the front page. And its just bitching and moaning. I dont think hes really promoting the Macbook, but making the case that these stories are retarded... which in fact, they are.
- sundaydriver, on 01/17/2008, -0/+0Mac Cube.
- AzureRise, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1People have a right to express their opinion. But if someone is making a good living and have a lot of expendable money to throw around, it's their choice if they wanna buy one.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 01/17/2008, -3/+6Either you use linux or your a spoiled college student. This is why diggers suck ass.
- slashbot, on 01/17/2008, -2/+1This is why Apple is making a big mistake with the MacBook Air
- Shiftgood, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1yeah, no they arent making a mistake at all. im pretty sure its going to increase their profits and share of the marketplace. Just because people on digg feel so high and mighty about being one of the stanky tools at Fry's electronics doesnt mean the rest of the world is.
Get over yourself.

- Shiftgood, on 01/17/2008, -2/+1I think its about time the digg users start burring these stories.
- DewKnight, on 01/17/2008, -1/+5Apple could release a steaming pile of crap and you fanboys would buy every last one
- Shiftgood, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Yah, idiots. then like, you and me would be like "look how dumb they are" and then we'd totally slo-mo high-five and lighting would shoot out and be all awesome. And all the people with macs would look at us and be like. "dude no way". and we'd be like "way, totally way"
/so above it

- sonicularulus, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3Macbook Air = total waste of money
My reasoning:
1. At that price, you can get a macbook pro (student discount).
2. If you need portable, you can either go macbook if you need mac or just get the Eee
3. No firewire on an Apple laptop?! are you serious?
4. PATA?!
5. No user replaceable battery? Yes i know apple doesnt charge you extra to get it installed, but what a hassle.- Shiftgood, on 01/17/2008, -4/+1stfu you're annoying.
- sonicularulus, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1freedom of speech, so ill keep commenting as i please.
what would be the purpose of this comment system if i,"stfu"- Shiftgood, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1fine, dont shut up. But just know that you're annoying... deal?
(p.s. freedom of speech? you're playing that card? are you in high school?)

- coheedcollapse, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1For the sake of consistency, you could buy more than just a solid desktop with the leftovers from an eee PC if you had the funds to buy an Air. I bought the components and built my own computer for a bit over $600 and it can handle just about anything on all high but Crysis.
- Shiftgood, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1great, wow, tell me more... really? oh *****... dude you're hella smart.. any other advice? damn.. you must be like superman or something.. like smart super powers or some *****.... damn you kick ass.
- hanyoon, on 01/17/2008, -1/+4"It’s one of the reasons I don’t park my BMW on my street. The other reason is because I don’t have a BMW."
- DarkoKun, on 01/17/2008, -2/+0Spoiled college student? Oxymoron?
- HerrEisenheim, on 01/17/2008, -0/+0They both suck. One is too small and underpowered to be useful, the other one you have to spend at least $3,100 on and then have to deal with its negatives. How about someone create something right in the middle?
- ericdano, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Seriously, who cares? I'm sure a Mattel Speak-N-Spell works for you better than a Nintendo DS. Some people want this laptop. Apple doesn't just introduce things that people do not want. Look at the iPod. People thought it was stupid when it came out. That other products, like Creative, did a better job. But it took off. Same with the MacBook Air. I already know a few people who are interested in it.......amazing enough.
I'd be more interested if Apple had not only introduced this, but also made the new touch pad thing standard on ALL it's laptops. - drocha184, on 01/17/2008, -3/+1Sucks to be poor, eh?
