- stoanhart, on 07/09/2009, -3/+82Can someone summarize the list here? Reading the article is such a Chore...
- j035u5, on 07/09/2009, -5/+41google chore, now 500% slower than chrome and 700% more cluttered
- joeblow1102, on 07/08/2009, -0/+35Must not be invite-based. I'm looking at you, Google Voice.
- Monkofdoom, on 07/09/2009, -2/+25That's because it's a Google Chore OS
- EntropyFan, on 07/09/2009, -1/+24Chore? it is spelled correctly.
A spell checker won't catch that one - chesterjosiah, on 07/09/2009, -2/+20That's called proofreading, not spellchecking.
- tpv2066, on 07/09/2009, -6/+22Spellcheck? That would be nice...
- tubaros, on 07/09/2009, -5/+19Dugg for title...
- sHockz, on 07/09/2009, -1/+13copy + paste
- bloodypython, on 07/09/2009, -0/+10sounds tedious
- sameer768, on 07/09/2009, -2/+12VLC accompanied with it.
- bsonline, on 07/09/2009, -1/+11Apparently, people want the OS to be:
Cloud based with seamless syncing back to your other devices.
Integrated Quicksilver/QSB + Gmailish keyboard shortcuts. I'd rather just have keyboard shortcuts, personally.
Legacy and new hardware support, so grandma's PC can join in on the fun.
Cloud based, but this time with some line blurring between desktop and cloudtop experiences. You know, best of both worlds.
Support for current linux applications, which not even all flavors of linux can currently provide. Wine. And although Wine is not an emulator, we want Mac application support, too. Emulate that.
Enterprise friendly with support for google apps and any other service company b wants to use.
Between the lines:
Fast fast fast fast. Do all of this, do more. And do it with single digit startup times and pages loading 2-3 seconds before I decide I want to go to them.
Magic pixie blowjobs would be great.
Should work on my old 486 just like a modern computer, and failing that, google should provide me with free hardware so I can do them the favor of running their OS.
Sarcasm aside, I think google will pull of quite a bit. I think it will be a stripped down version of linux, though, with a huge emphasis on Chrome and running your apps through there. Support for any app right out of the box, as long as it runs in a browser. I think this is how it's going to be fast. It turns your netbook into, get this, a net based book type computer. So no tetris, unless you go to tetris.com
For more information, read google's official blog. - xirfan, on 07/09/2009, -1/+10i stopped doing chores years ago and i'm not about to start again, google can keep their chores!
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -3/+12HI! BILLY MAYS HERE WITH THE GOOGLE CHORE OS. WORN OUT FROM WASHING DISH AFTER DISH? IS MOWING THE LAWN CUTTING *YOU* DOWN? TAKE THAT GARBAGE OUT WITH GOOGLE CHORE OS. IT'S EASY. IT'S FAST. IT MAKES TEDIOUS TASKS A THING OF THE PAST.
- sameer768, on 07/09/2009, -0/+8Just saying, its better to have a media player out of the box, rather than having to download one.
- snagglefoof, on 07/09/2009, -2/+10"Chore" is a regular English word, so it wouldn't be caught in a spellchecker.
- thectrain, on 07/09/2009, -1/+9Its based on Linux I believe, so its not backwards compatibility its compatibility. Plus Mac OSX is based upon BSD so if they have linux app support its pretty much exactly what Apple did with OSX.
- Tarokun, on 07/09/2009, -0/+8It should be soft and cuddly! With lots of firepower!
- stanleyford, on 07/09/2009, -0/+8I definitely do not want a Google Whore OS. Vista already blows, and I don't have to pay it $50 bucks each time.
- imjohn, on 07/09/2009, -0/+8I'd like it to fix my misspelled Digg article titles.
- Elranzer, on 07/09/2009, -0/+8Cuz Gmail was invite-based, an nobody got accounts for that until it went public...
- xirfan, on 07/09/2009, -2/+9people install that voluntarily? it has adverts! pidgin is a good alternative.
- CoreyTamas, on 07/09/2009, -2/+8Ah. I'm glad to hear from someone who's using it regularly. See, the rest of us are still mistakenly under the impression it doesn't exist yet, so we don't have that great hands-on experience that you do.
- 4321234, on 07/09/2009, -2/+8How will this be better than iChore?
- geodebug, on 07/09/2009, -3/+9Because everything has already been invented and perfected by existing software....
Oh wait, no it hasn't.
lowered expectations..... - NeoCortex, on 07/09/2009, -0/+6With all of this cloud computing, I'm still hoping that the OS is still usable for many tasks (Documents, e-mail messages, images, etc) when not online. Sometimes I need to check something I've done and am not near a wifi spot.
- pitdog, on 07/09/2009, -2/+7Better Chore then Whore...
- bsonline, on 07/09/2009, -0/+5Dugg for sarcasm.
- TranquilNight, on 07/09/2009, -4/+9I bet it's gonna suck. I mean look at G. Chrome browser. It's fast and has some nice features, but NO customization. Look at Google Desktop with their forced search, which slows down everything. And of course, privacy issues. They should stick to the web.
- pheardotcom, on 07/09/2009, -2/+7haha title fail.
- GKommet, on 07/09/2009, -0/+5Buried for title.
Everyone's eager to hit the front page. How about a half-second pause to recheck your submission? - boonesfarm, on 07/09/2009, -1/+6I hope they cripple it, then charge me $9.99 for an app loader.... then another $9.99 for the luxury to copy & paste.
I'm going to love watching Google chomp away at Apple's tiny software footprint. - jeremymccurdy, on 07/09/2009, -2/+7Is a pretty boring game with pretty graphics.
- Nothlit, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4Why are you comparing this to the iPhone? It is a desktop operating system...
- javaroast, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4Versus those OS's that don't run each app in it's own process?!?
- DAILYCROW, on 07/09/2009, -1/+5shallow:
what an ass.
You'd sound smarter if you'd shut up. - Tenoq, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4I'm not convinced VLC is fast enough nor streamlined enough meet Google's goals here. It's certainly not the most efficient player when you're talking x264...
- Twinnie, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4I hope the final version isn't actually called Chrome OS, that'd be annoying. I don't even like the name Chrome for the browser.
- bsonline, on 07/09/2009, -1/+5What typo? They are calling it Chore -
Central Heuristic Online Response Engine
- This is the basis for the "new cloud" that was in all of those articles yesterday. Don't you people READ the articles? - Nothlit, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4You mean "chrome"?
- intekra, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4Thank you Jim from Pleasure Toys Unlimited. rofl
Google didn't transcribe it very well though. - brundlefly76, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3Google Chrome is not a new OS, its just another Linux distribution.
Google isnt authoring a new OS kernel, filesystem, device drivers and shell.
Its most likely just going to be a customized window manager with some additional apps. - JonnyIsElectric, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3i got an invite =]
- spunker202, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3Pidgin, amsn, kopete, ... lots of alternative exists ( at least in linux)
- Klowner, on 07/09/2009, -2/+5The OSX kernel (Mach) is not based on BSD, only the userspace stuff.
Google Chrome uses the Linux kernel, and whatever userspace stuff google comes up with, which I assume would be the typical GNU stuff plus some sort of X11 implementation paired with a custom window manager / desktop environment. - jeremymccurdy, on 07/09/2009, -1/+4Pidgin, and all the other IM programs that make use of the protocol don't fully implement the same feature that you get in MSN. Just get Messenger Plus to get rid of the ads.
- Choobie, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3You know, I am starting to think that was a retarded thing to say. The more I read about Chrome OS, the more I think it will only be a lightweight OS that will feel like a base install of gOS. I am worried that it might not be much more than a well-integrated desktop-cloud operating system.
To win me, this OS will need to be able to do the heavy lifting as well. AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks, full blown word processor for those things that Google Docs just can't do yet, music server (more or less as I have it set up now in linux), gaming (for those that have the time, and yes linux does have a few decent games for it), and so forth. - m0deth, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3What new system? Without the linux kernel....it's not even a true OS!!!!!!!
Chore was the perfect name, rhymes with bore, whore, needs 'more' to be real....etc
you get the idea, god, please read THROUGH the hype for once.
Chrome has yet to meet web standards, look good, support web formats, be useful...need I say more, this will be more fail, and one hell of a tax right off. - sfcaptainrob, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3You want to do AutoCAD and Photoshop on your netbook? Really?
- bsonline, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3I've used Google apps for a while now, and I do have to admit that I trust their hardware more than I trust my own. But, I do agree that there is a lot of problems in the infrastructure between there and here. The proverbial pipes are too often clogged for my pleasure.
