- neko, on 10/29/2007, -1/+75Sigh. I was really hoping UT3 would be linux-compatible out of the box. Maybe even a little penguin sticker and a "Games For Linux" brand across the top? Too much to hope for...
- atrus123, on 10/29/2007, -2/+48I'm glad it's coming out for Linux. I'm disappointed it won't be in the box.
But as a Linux devotee, I'm used to this by now. - Anonymous3, on 10/15/2007, -0/+26At least this way they have a direct indicator of Linux adoption for the game.
- TheRealToma, on 10/15/2007, -0/+23Icculus is the bomb.
- Bootes, on 10/16/2007, -0/+17I'm sure the Linux Dedicated server will be out at launch.
- canthraxp, on 10/15/2007, -2/+17[cyberflas] Man, my penis is so big if I laid it out on a keyboard it'd go all the way from A to Z
[cyberflas] wait, *****
Good ol' bash.org - ldog, on 10/17/2007, -0/+12That was UT 2004. UT 2003(should have been called UT2004-pre-alpha) shipped with linux binaries, but there was not mention of it on the box.
UT 99 (the original) didn't have Linux binaries in the box. - obxjdt, on 10/15/2007, -3/+14This affects about 1/8 of UT players and about 7/8 of UT servers. Bad decision in my opinion, but who am I???
- zzzpoohzzz, on 10/16/2007, -2/+12how is an operating system correlated to penis size at all...
wow... i can't believe you were the fastest sperm - eggie015, on 10/17/2007, -0/+10they had a little penguin on the back of the original....
- p0ss, on 10/17/2007, -3/+13Now we just need a linux game that ISN'T a shooter....
- rdelcueto, on 10/15/2007, -0/+8Hmmm... BOTH! =D
- Coldkill, on 10/15/2007, -1/+9Another idiot
- ldog, on 10/17/2007, -0/+7That was really cool when they did it for UT2004. This release could be better though, because it's likely we will get a native port of UnrealEd.
I'm buying at least two the day the linux binaries are out. - fleng, on 10/17/2007, -0/+7Well atleast they make a linux version.
- Kickboy, on 10/17/2007, -2/+9Unreal Tournament 2004 had Linux in the box, and had a x86_64 version in the box. And yet the new UT3 doesn't? I thought these things were suppose to improve over time, now it seems more like Linux support is taking a giant step back.
All I can say is: ***** lame. - mooninite, on 10/16/2007, -0/+7"Ryan has also stated this morning that there are no intentions of doing a 64-bit version of Unreal Tournament 3 for Linux. Though if time permits, he may produce a x86_64 build anyways."
There better be enough time... I'm getting tired of the commercial world (Adobe) treating 64-bit like it is not a big deal. We want a native 64-bit binary. - h4mx0r, on 10/15/2007, -0/+6I suppose it'll be a separate retail box for macs, rather than a download... Of course, what do I know?
- ldog, on 10/17/2007, -0/+5There's been three releases so far UT, UT2003, UT2004. Two of three had Linux binaries in the box. So technically it is more out of the ordinary to not include the Linux binaries.
But yeah, nothing to bitch about. We'll get a native port of the game and a wxWindows-based native version of UnrealEd this time.
This is great news. - hexydes, on 10/15/2007, -1/+5Man...talk about glass half-empty.
- Bootes, on 10/15/2007, -0/+4Mac version is separate.
- inactive, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3Neverwinter Nights :)
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3There are other ways of gathering stats. They'll probably release an update for the game sooner rather than later (they always do...). Why not gather stats then?
- cgruber, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3Last I checked it's Ryan not Yan.
- inactive, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3I agree, i would like a nice rpg, maybe a 2d rpg like chronotrigger, or breath of fire style
- howser2007, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3The developers specifically stated that the textures in the demo are low quality in order to conserve file size. You also have to make sure the screen render size is set to 100%, or just a little below that.
- Dylan47, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3because after we have downloaded that file and got it working, it will never stop working. Cant say the same for windows.
- ldog, on 10/15/2007, -1/+3My guess is that Epic needs stats, it can get numbers from the servers as to numbers and types of clients connecting to them.
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 10/16/2007, -2/+4I fear this may be a lose lose situation. There are two alternatives
1. People jump through the hoop and download the client: Hooray! We don't have to include linux compatibility in-box ever again...
2. People don't bother downloading the client / don't know about it: See? Gaming for Linux isn't a large market after all... - knodi, on 10/15/2007, -2/+4Is this same for Mac clients?
- thePTS, on 09/13/2008, -0/+2Hey guys, I'm from the future. UT3 for linux was never released, nice going Epic.
- theendlessnow, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2As nice as it sounds, with UT2004, you may (or probably may not) know that the versions on the shelf currently DO NOT include the Linux client nor will the DVD install for Linux at all. Your only solution today if you buy UT2004 is to either buy an old copy (if you can find one with the penguin logo) or get it used.
So... in all fairness, if "they" (whoever that is...) can make sure to NOT break the Linux compatibility, it would be greatly appreciated. I use "they" because things change over time... and as with the case with UT2004, the new owners are NOT linux friendly, not at all. - geminitojanus, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2It's probably not going to be included on the disk because it's not ready. If it's reprinted in the future, it may be on the reprints (knowing the Unreal crew, I'd bet on this being the case). Not including it on the golden master gives them a couple of extra weeks to work out any last minute issues with the Linux version.
- Chandon, on 10/15/2007, -0/+2> Why are you using Linux in the first place then?
Because it's easy to use and maintain. I'm not looking for every game install to turn into some sort of crazy hobbyist project. Anything more than putting in the CD, double clicking on install.sh, clicking "Run", and clicking "install" is just stupid & unnecessary work. - andycr512, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2"We'll get a native port of the game and a wxWindows-based native version of UnrealEd this time."
Thank God for that... Can't tell you how badly I wished I could edit UT2k4 maps in Linux.
Now just give me a great Blender exporter and I'll be off! - DestroyFascism, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1Hooah! anyway...
- jabailo, on 11/18/2007, -0/+1Just goes to show: Linux users are ahead because we don't need old media (DVDs) from the 90s.
- mock, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1WOOT!
- andycr512, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1The newest updated version still works with Linux perfectly (I play against Windows-using people on it all the time, and you can only join servers at the same update level as your client), so I have no idea why they did this.
So they didn't "break compatibility", if what you said is true they just stopped offering the binary in the game box for some odd reason. - andycr512, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1"Why are you using Linux in the first place then?"
Because unlike a certain flag-laden OS it actually works after heavy use for several months without a reinstall. Or, in my case, 2, after which it ate the partition table and died. - andycr512, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1I really don't mind downloading a Linux binary separately, to be honest. After a couple months you'll need tens of megs of patches to play online anyway, knowing Epic. (No, I'm not bashing Epic - all games have bugs, and the more patches the more they care about fixing them.)
- stmiller, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1A great interview with Icculus here, btw:
http://www.twit.tv/floss/ryan_gordon
He talks about porting games to Linux. - Dylan47, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1I still get immense joy from hearing this stuff from people, they think they know so much about it, but you are the one who knows better and you know that. And you laugh at those that still believe in the oddest things.
My brother still believes that his ps2 would be able to play copied games without a modchip, on the basis that it can already play copied dvd's... i pity him. - andycr512, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1If that's the case, then I understand perfectly.
I'm perfectly fine with getting the later releases - I don't mind if they take a few weeks to get the Linux version working after the Windows version is out. I can wait - I know that most of the money will come from the Windows version, and I'm grateful that they are writing such a great game for my favourite platform.
In short, as long as it works when it does come out, I'll be happy. If it doesn't... Well, perhaps I will put off buying it until the client is out and the feedback is in, just in case. :) - NtrmDscrptr, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1Emphatic agreement!
- krunchyfrog, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1I rejoice to the thought that you'll only download the latest version of the installer + executable. That will be a nice nifty way to make sure it's at the latest version on a fresh install.
- deadbaby, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1The graphics aren't up to the level of Bioshock but remember it's a massively multi-player game with huge outdoor environments. That's much more stressful than doing single player games with an indoor environment. Plus they wanted to target the widest audience possible by making it run on mid-range machines. I have all the graphics options turned up and it looks great. No complaints.
- Chandon, on 10/17/2007, -3/+4This is seriously lame. After getting it right with UT2003 and UT2004, Epic has decided to backslide with UT2007 and provide a horrible user experience for Linux users. I gave up on buying Windows retail versions of games with downloadable Linux clients with Neverwinter Nights - sorry Epic, doing a worse job than before isn't going to get you my business.
- Breepee, on 10/17/2007, -1/+2That's one. Hundreds to go...
- JohnFlux, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1I'm in the future-future, talking from June 2009. Ryan said last month that it's "still on its way. Being poked and prodded and optimized and stuff."
