- Phocion55, on 01/06/2008, -2/+52Why is that one guy going for a jog with it slung around his shoulder?
I mean....I like Ubuntu and all, but I'm not THAT attached to it. - niallabrown, on 01/06/2008, -4/+42I'm so glad to hear they are using Ubuntu as the base. The EEEPC looks great but I would prefer to support Ubuntu over Xandros. This pretty much clinches the argument that Linux seems to be taking over the UMPC market.
- inactive, on 01/06/2008, -3/+30Stop spamming PCLinuxOS dammit, no one cares.
- timo1023, on 01/06/2008, -0/+24You can change the OS on the eeePC fairly easily, and there are even custom distros that support all of the features.
Xubuntu for the eeePC: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/ubuntu:eeexubuntu:home - carpespasm, on 01/06/2008, -2/+23Meh, cool that it runs on linux, and the keyboard thing is a neat concept, but it's gotta be too annoying to use as a day to day machine with the split membrane keyboard. The EEEpc is nice because even though it's smaller, it has a real keyboard and touchpad. A touchscreen would be nice too, but I *need* a touchpad and keyboard I can feel first.

- nagokuk, on 01/06/2008, -0/+14finally a notebook i can put on a hanger, like the rest of my clothing.

- Phocion55, on 01/06/2008, -0/+11Maybe he's Wardriving at a brisk pace?
- HenkPoley, on 01/06/2008, -0/+10This is *running* Ubuntu.

- directive0, on 01/06/2008, -0/+8Ubuntu's existing user base does not prove its quality, but using it does.
- ThomS, on 01/06/2008, -0/+8Woah seriously, you're a dvorak user? I'm a hot girl and I want you now!
prick - aydoubleyou, on 01/06/2008, -0/+8Apparently when youre done using it for the day you can hang it up in your closet?
- secrity, on 01/06/2008, -1/+7The applications would run the spell check, and many of them can.
- ninja0, on 01/06/2008, -0/+6warjogging?
- DonkeyBeliever, on 01/06/2008, -5/+11I'll stick with my EeePC
- MiG39, on 01/06/2008, -1/+6How much is it?
- InuX, on 01/06/2008, -3/+8Holy *****, that looks awesome!
- bwpayne, on 01/06/2008, -0/+5I found its much easier to jog with it slung over your shoulder than carry it with your hands.
Then again... I bring my desktop when I jog, so it might be different with the UMPC. - inactive, on 01/06/2008, -0/+4If it supports one distro then it supports them all (with a few minor caveats).
The only difference might be that the "default" OS would come with all the specialized interfaces pre-configured; but even closed-source proprietary interface software and/or drivers aren't usually all that difficult to port between distros, and somebody would most likely hack up some easy-to-use scripts for changing distros within a month or two of release.
take Xubuntu on the eeepc as a case in point (link above). - tgunner, on 01/06/2008, -2/+5I am confused as hell.
- bloogey, on 01/06/2008, -0/+3war jogging!
- pikelet, on 01/07/2008, -0/+3Wireless in Ubuntu works fine for me, although not out of the box on my Eee. It was just a matter of running a few scripts and now it's working flawlessly anywhere I try to connect.
- fcukthisgame, on 01/06/2008, -1/+4Am I the only person on digg that neither loves NOR hates Ubuntu?
I use it, it's great when you need low maintenance. If you need performance, Ubuntu isn't it. It's got it's place in the linux distro universe, but it's not the supreme being of it.
gahh. - RichardHendrix, on 01/06/2008, -0/+3The look of that harkens back to the ROKR.. awkward, and usually held like a dead fish
- shovelihave, on 01/06/2008, -1/+4Dugg for the funny picture of the asian guy holding the computer around his neck
- wybiral, on 01/06/2008, -1/+4lol
- sylv3r, on 01/07/2008, -0/+3500 bucks no way. The good thing about the EEE is the price, even if it's bloated as it is now, it's still the best value for a UMPC, at least until the Everex book hits the market
- goldenratiophi, on 01/06/2008, -0/+3you forgot to pass your hand over your head while whoooooshing
- PHovey, on 01/06/2008, -0/+3Running is hard enough as it is without some computer around your shoulder!
Besides, imagine the looks you'd get... - niallabrown, on 01/07/2008, -2/+5I'm talking about out of the box.
- inactive, on 01/06/2008, -0/+3The OS choice is probably one of the least important features. Clearly they're following in the footsteps of the OLPC and eeepc; so they're clearly going to go with *some* linux distro, no big surprise that they just went the the "most popular" (at least, by some sort of ranking method..) If one distro runs on it, then they probably all do; reinstalling your favorite distro shouldn't be too hard.
The *really* cool part about this is the keyboard and full 180 fold-over hinge. I would think that it would be a pain to type on like a normal keyboard, but for tablet-style use it might come in handy. Even just the 180 hinge design alone is a big (though minor) design change; It would be interesting to see a tablet pc using this hinge and a normal keyboard (perhaps that was locked when flipped into "tablet mode"), it seems like it would be much cheaper and more durable the the common flip&swivel hinge that most tablets have now. - inactive, on 01/07/2008, -1/+4Whats the use of optimized performance when you spend half your time ***** compiling ***** rather then actually using it.
- ninja0, on 01/06/2008, -0/+3in that case, I'd say the EeePC is way more worth it. they cost around 400$.. and ive even seen them on sale for 350 before!
- ekravchenko, on 01/06/2008, -0/+3nice, anything running ubuntu must be cheaper than anything running windows ☺
- fcukthisgame, on 01/06/2008, -0/+3"This pretty much clinches the argument that Linux seems to be taking over the UMPC market."
Well, if you're comparing it to Windows, there's no contest to begin with. Having used XP Tablet PC Edition, it definitely leaves the door open for anything else in the market. And from my experience, windows doesn't take kindly to non-standard screen resolutions.
My only real question would be how well ubuntu (or any other linux distro for that matter) can manage wireless networks and roaming, etc. - inactive, on 01/06/2008, -2/+4I have supressed homosexual tendencies.
- manstein01, on 01/07/2008, -0/+2As a PCLOS user, I can say with confidence that Ubuntu is a great distro.
Linux is all about choice. Deal with it. - RedGreen1, on 01/07/2008, -0/+2I cannot stand touchpads. I feel like a child using them. I swear by trackpoints myself.
- ninja0, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2what the *****.....
- riah, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2I like the new design innovations this introduces, though. The standard keyboard can only go so small before becoming impractical, right about the EEEpc's size, while this design allows an even smaller device. It also doesn't take up screen real estate like an on screen touch keyboard would. I sure would like to try it out.
- derrickgossman, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2I've been running Xubuntu on my Eee for weeks - works great!
- einfeldt, on 01/07/2008, -0/+1+1
I provide volunteer sys admin support for a public middle school in San Francisco, and it just so happens that all of the student-facing workstations are PClinuxOS, and one of our high-end multimedia boxes is Gutsy Ubuntu, and we have a Feisty Edubuntu thin-client lab. They all work fine, and the kids go back and forth very happily. - derrickgossman, on 01/07/2008, -0/+1And those people aren't going to care what distro is on there. If a customer actually does care what distro is on the device, then they will install the distro of their choice.
- ninja0, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1intel? where have you been?
- fcukthisgame, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1You get everything you need, nothing you don't. Smaller downloads than binary. Easier updates.
Pros and Cons, my friend, pros and cons. - niallabrown, on 01/07/2008, -0/+1I think they were trying to improve on the tumb typing layouts tried recently. I think they look like they where successful with that.
- niallabrown, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1And those people are free to, im happy for them.... but this is a good thing for spreading a distro that is not supporting Microsoft is my point.
