- Philluminati, on 11/15/2007, -6/+131coz it sounds like the gay version of ubuntu.
- ptFoe, on 11/14/2007, -16/+67This project would be great.
Why don't they call it Homubuntu ;) - ramvi, on 11/14/2007, -3/+47"The goal is to have a working release available with the upcoming Gutsy Gibbon release of Ubuntu (or perhaps Gutsy+1 at the latest)."
"the upcoming Gutsy Gibbon"? Doesn't seem to be the most updated / serious project - stonyhill, on 11/14/2007, -4/+31Love the concept. I've been trying for months to get my Ubuntu server to nicely stream media and backup files for my mix of Ubuntu and Windows PCs, and Mac laptops. If it made backups, streaming, and network connections simple out of the box, I'd be thrilled.
- madeinbrazil, on 11/14/2007, -5/+23Why are people complaining about a free OS? If you are happy to pay for a closed and risky OS, thats your thing. But I'd much rather get my free product. Ubuntu is making nice developments on their products.
- Philluminati, on 11/13/2007, -3/+21we didn't steal the idea for home server from Microsoft. They stole it from us: http://www.freenas.org/
- Tyr7BE, on 11/15/2007, -2/+18The kids could call it 'Hobu'
- bdbr, on 11/13/2007, -0/+15Who cares? If it turns out to be useful software, its a good thing.
- Phocion55, on 11/13/2007, -13/+28....and less bugs, bloat, DRM, lock-in, and virus threats.
- stotty, on 11/14/2007, -45/+59What a load of hypocritical crock. MS copy ideas and they are labelled stealing and evil. But I guess it's ok and genius for the OSS to do it, right.
- 89vision, on 11/12/2007, -2/+16This sounds like it is going to be an out of the box solution for the non-power user.
- kazamx, on 11/13/2007, -2/+15Ubuntu isn't. A group of guys who use Ubuntu are

Bender: "Oh, ok, I thought you said romo."

- daftman, on 11/13/2007, -3/+14If you spend less time trolling Linux stories as you do on your looks, you wouldn't look as ugly. But then I think you already know this.
For those who are clueless, check his profile. - redcard, on 11/12/2007, -0/+10Except it wouldn't, since Canonical allows usage of its trademarks for derived works/ "remixes." It only violates trademark law if the people who own the trademark have not licensed usage. They HAVE.
- peedeeramone, on 11/13/2007, -0/+10the only thing is that when MS "steals" something, they charge $300 for it....
at least this would be somewhat robin hood like....
just my 2 cents. - int19h, on 11/15/2007, -1/+11Hobuntu sounds more like the other buntus :)
- tripzero, on 11/13/2007, -5/+15 Maybe they should call it "that place where I live Server" or "where my rump rests Server" cuz if anyone uses the word "home" they are definitely stealing ideas.
- sirhomer, on 11/13/2007, -2/+11photocopiers*
- e808, on 11/14/2007, -1/+10I'm already using Ubuntu Server as a home server.
- redcard, on 11/13/2007, -1/+10Umm.. perhaps you should know a bit more about Ubuntu's usage policies before you go all "criticizing." Maybe you should read up on it here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/aboutus/trademarkpolicy
And maybe you should understand that people can , at will, LICENSE their trademark for whatever reason or cost they deem necessary. - redcard, on 11/13/2007, -0/+9I invite you to read the Ubuntu Trademark policy page.
http://www.ubuntu.com/aboutus/trademarkpolicy
Please don't go around defending an organization against things that organization explicitly encourages. - inactive, on 11/13/2007, -7/+16Windows is winning for one reason: It's what's installed on 98% of PCs when you purchase them.
- stubear, on 11/12/2007, -3/+11It would violate trademark law, not copyright.
- kurtergad87, on 11/13/2007, -0/+8You might need to realize that it isn't necessarily the same people doing both things. As you yourself is evidence of (criticizing the norm), Digg isn't a homogeneous unit, but a collection of riff-raff individuals that might be quiet or active at different times or topics.
That said there probably is an overlap, but even then people might be opposed to the general idea of intellectual property and the specific patent threats from Microsoft, so they voice their annoyance with MS when a story is of MS copying FOSS, but fail to care when situation is reversed, because FOSS can likely exist in a patent-free world. - 8fans, on 11/14/2007, -2/+9$190 for M$ Home Server is too much so I look forward to a stable Ubuntu Home Server release with many of the same features.
- xqb4dpx, on 11/14/2007, -2/+9they NEED to get it working with the Xbox 360
- JasonCox, on 11/13/2007, -16/+23OSS start your photocopies!
- brettalton, on 11/14/2007, -0/+7I can't be bothered reading this entire thread, so let me tell you this:
I'm one of the "lead developers" on this project, and all I've done is submit a couple revisions of an interface for the control panel: http://forums.ubuntuhomeserver.org/viewtopic.php?t ... ...
The problem is, this project was defunct before it even got started. We don't have SVN/Trac set up, we have no clear idea of where we want to go -- do we want to copy FreeNAS, Webmin etc with a web interface or do we want to copy WHS and give the server a GUI.
So once we get a dedicated server up and running, a clear leader for all things Ubuntu Home Server and some serious programmers, then this project is a no go.
Lastly, for the record, the idea was originated by user 'ago' before WHS was known: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=284785 which then was dubbed UHS by user 'foerdi' with this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=445675. That's how and why the domain was bought 'TabletGuy' (aka: Mark) here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2747730&pos ...
So do you want to get this project moving? We need your help. We need a SVN/Trac server for our code and we need to put together a hierarchy for managerial purposes. Then we need to start coding.
Thanks for reading. - sirhomer, on 11/13/2007, -2/+9You can still play DRMed media on Linux. Linux players either ignore it or strip it out.
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -1/+8HornoBuntu wouldn't be that bad since you would end up storing your porn collection on it.
- Thomaschaaf, on 11/14/2007, -0/+6And I thought Ubuntu switched to making soda...
- redcard, on 11/13/2007, -0/+6No, you're obviously NOT a lawyer, but Ubuntu is run by an organization that HAS lawyers on staff that HAVE given them advice on their copyright/trademark issues. Do you seriously think you're better than Canonical's lawyers when you're NOT a lawyer? And please read the trademark policy, it makes it very clear who the users or owners are. You really don't do yourself a service here by just randomly spouting off things you clearly know nothing about.
- kindrobot, on 11/12/2007, -1/+7I'm laughing so hard I'm actually in pain. Thanks a lot.
- crestfall, on 11/13/2007, -0/+6All cars have steering wheels... who gives a *****.
- ours, on 11/12/2007, -4/+10Who the hell do you bitch to when Windows screws up? Microsoft? Ha! That's a good one. Like that would help much.
- cwilson, on 11/13/2007, -4/+10I agree with Darcy, Windows Home Server is a good product. I have no idea where your DRM claim is coming from. It isn't bloated, if anything, it's more of a stripped down Windows 2003 Server install (I wish it would do more, actually). It is not a simple NAS solution either. It's pretty clever the way it backs up data from your machines. Gives a nice high level view of your network's security (making sure all PCs are up to date, etc). I like the simplicity of adding disks to it too. It doesn't feel as safe as a hardware RAID, but it's good enough for folks who aren't too computer savvy.
I was pretty skeptical about Home Server when it was announced, but then I actually used it. If you are an OSX or Linux/BSD user, it really doesn't make much sense to have, but it's nice for taking care of a Windows household. You don't have to like Home Server, but seriously, not EVERYTHING MS makes is bad. - fraggle35, on 11/13/2007, -2/+8FreeNAS has been going a lot longer than Windows Home Server and is already a very polished solution.
- NoTiG, on 11/13/2007, -1/+7Or because at a glance it looks like hornu ubuntu which really doesn't go well since the new distribution name is sometimes misinterpreted as hairy hardon as well
- tripzero, on 11/13/2007, -2/+7The idea of using Linux as a "home server" has been around a lot longer than any idea that MS came up with. Remember Linux started mainly on servers. This is just an effort to preinstall all the software packages that _already exist_ into an easy to use distro
- cawpin, on 11/13/2007, -0/+5I think he should change his first name from Jason to Chasin.
- Ub3rg33k, on 11/13/2007, -0/+5BTW - torrent for a VM image of the current test UHS http://linuxtracker.org/torrents-details.php?id=45 ...

Vista? - Xlr8ed, on 11/12/2007, -4/+9Wow....Ubuntu, Samba, and VNC Server and they are going to tack on something that backs up your clients. If they include BackupPC, I am going to right this project off straight away...as it's one of the ugliest pieced of software ever.
Can't say that I impressed yet as this could be done with a simple tutorial.
Forum thread here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=445675 - andycr512, on 11/13/2007, -1/+6Hobuntu sounds like an OS for homeless train-riders.
- sirhomer, on 11/12/2007, -0/+5Sorry I didn't see "less integration and user friendless" on their feature list.
- hijinks, on 11/12/2007, -3/+8why are you so angry.. you sound like a Fedora user you is angry your distro lost all its users
- nailer, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4Last time everyone checked Linux still runs on more server hardware than Windows.
- arjie, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4@jakobrowning: I have a couple of objections. Installing a .deb _is_ as simple as double-clicking it. I'm what you would call a typical user, I don't know anything about how things fit together in the linux world but I have been using Ubuntu since Breezy Badger without a break. You needn't understand how the filesystem works, but you can bother to learn if you want to. I just remember the etc (config), bin (applications), media (dvds and other drives) mantra.
I don't understand this: "For all the criticism that everyone has for Windows, how many of those people know how or are willing to make something similar?"
Why should somebody know how to make a Windows to think that it is bad? -
