- valen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From the study's executive summary itself:
"The sample, although too small to provide conclusive statistical comparisons, illustrates the methodology and begins to shed light on some key model differences between the platforms."
I have never seen a study before that has said "don't believe this paper" in the executive summary quite like this paper.
Also of interest, a quick look at the Windows Server reliability white papers page reveals some interesting features:
"Understanding Reliability of Evolving Systems -- Security Innovation (November 2005): This Microsoft-sponsored research ..."
"Tests Show Windows Server Environment More Reliable and Easier to Manage -- VeriTest (April 2005): ... This Microsoft-sponsored study ..."
"Comparing Microsoft .NET and IBM WebSphere/J2EE -- The Middleware Company (September 2004): ... A Microsoft-sponsored study ..."
On that same page, I had trouble finding any independent report written in the last year saying that Windows was better than other operating systems. - xarius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's quite sad that the only people who hear (or even care) about this sort of thing is us geeks. All the management types will hear is the contents of the study, and not the insidious affiliations behind it.
- Latimer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I came to Digg to get away for the /. blind hatred for MS. Maybe I'm in the wrong place.....
- Dyamalos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Since I switched to Linux as my main OS (I still have windows on here...just in case) I haven't rebooted in the two weeks I've had it up...and it's running better than windows ever did. One high proses I do is UT2004, and it runs smother in Linux than it ever did in windows.
Also, ilyag, calling us nerds for talking about Linux on a technology site doesn't make since. In all respects, tech is nerd/geek. but to go even farther, open source is also part of tech...DEAL WITH IT! - twylight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actual us management types dont believe anything we read...and realize there are more important things in business than a stupid OS holy war.
- 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> MoeB wrote: "take a look around this site and you'll see some scary mac fanboys too."
You're correct. But what does that have to do with what stealthboy wrote regarding 7of7? It's as if you're saying, "Bill acts like a bonehead so it's okay if Sam does as well."
Fanboys of any ilk are just plain silly! - Flynnz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Since I switched to Linux as my main OS (I still have windows on here...just in case) I haven't rebooted in the two weeks I've had it up..."
Not sure what that is suppose to mean. I NEVER have to reboot xp unless I am installing an app that requires it. Why are some of you linux/mac guys stuck in the 90's? BSOD is so rare as well, but for some reason a bunch of ass hats come on digg and act like its still a problem.
I like the other OS's as well, but stop with these lame arguments. Cause you do realize that outside this very small minority of digg users, no one gives a crap what OS you use. - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Man, Windows fanboys are a scary bunch. Who actually *likes* Windows? Everyone I know that uses it just puts up with it."
Hi. I like Windows. Nice to meet you. - Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17of7 is one of those Digg trolls that you should just ignore. He's a clueless moron, who just posts on every Linux type post just to get people riled up.
Anyone that believes a study commissioned by Microsoft about how Microsoft products are uber, is an idiot. Just like anyone that believes a study commissioned by a pharmaceutical company about how their new drug is oh so better than another companies drugs is an idiot. - orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kind of what the Discovery institute does to Darwinism. " I reject your reality, and substitute my own "
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Actual us management types dont believe anything we read...and realize there are more important things in business than a stupid OS holy war."
You mean like making up obscure beuracratic rules and reading the latest business journal to keep up with the buzzwords? - MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Man, Windows fanboys are a scary bunch. Who actually *likes* Windows? Everyone I know that uses it just puts up with it."
take a look around this site and you'll see some scary mac fanboys too. - Matt2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Server 2003 is a far superior platform to Linux.
2000 was a pretty decent OS. 2003 is rock solid.
I mean, it's not like we're comparing Solaris or HPUX or anything where there might actually be some competition.
This coming from someone who develops drivers for both operating systems. Both have faults, but 2003 server is the winner, hands down. - Tufriast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1M$ is just trying to pour money into it's marketing of BS. In the end, it will prove fruitless. It's quite disgusting why so many people still use Windows.
Just use Linux, and be done with it. In time, either that, or Mac OS X, or a couple of operating systems will move into take it's place. It's just garbage, and it's prove over and over again by anyone that uses it. - tadelste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Way to go!
- jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1credibility also
- Flynnz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"This coming from someone who develops drivers for both operating systems. Both have faults, but 2003 server is the winner, hands down."
well not sure if I agree with you 100% but I will say that it seemed like less work securing 2003 out of the box than linux for us. Developing however really could be just what you are used to more than anything else. - VeteranRanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"What kind of idiots does Microsoft does think we are, anyway? "
I think the answer resides within the question.
Is that even a sentence? *grins*
And yes, Microsoft are filthy wretches. - isasusinfinite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I, for one, believe that Microsoft's ability to be credited shouldn't be a deciding factor in making the choice of one OS over the other. I mean, why should it matter if someone has a hard time lending capital to Microsoft? I mean, a CAT just got a credit card application offer for chrissakes. Surely M$, with its track record of manhandling partners and using its monolith clout to spread FUD about competitors in pursuit of the only success that matters to it, its bottom line, is able to apply and be successful proving it has the ability to scrape and kick and wring every last dollar out of its customers if this month's credit card bill is a little larger than its current coffers. C'mon, creditors, M$ is probably good for it.
Linux, on the other hand, might actually be the one with some creditability problems. I mean, it's not even a legal entity. Linux doesn't care whether or not its shareholders are having a hissy fit about last quarter's earnings, or whether or not its software enforces market dominance through cross-monopolization of skewed standards and commercialization of Digital Restrictions Management implemented in hardware. I mean, profitability and projection for monetizing growth don't even come in to play in the mind of Linux. All it cares about is that someone, somewhere has benefited from all the foo, loops, and keys that have so unselfishly gone into the project over the years; that it has THE potential; that it provides users with a growing, ever-more stable, secure, and user-friendly platform that entire nations will come to depend on, given time. And all for free.
No, Linux doesn't care about money first. I say to the creditors, give it no credit, it will earn it itself.
C|: - J_Omega, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1""Windows fanboys are a scary bunch. Who actually *likes* Windows?""
Well, not me, but I agree. Scary.
I know an IT dept. head for a pretty major corp. in Toronto. They *love* windows. When questioned why, when shown markedly superior advantages of linux, their answer basically always comes down to "that's what I know. I'm unfamiliar with *nix."
Familiarity doesn't breed contempt, apparently. - tuxchick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another 40 or 50 years of this, and some folks might actually catch on. :P
dugg. - retr0spectiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cerberus, its called punctuation. Try using it sometime. I'd agree with your opinion if it was in a more digestable format.
- isasusinfinite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Funny, ilyag, I thought the comments section was for free expression your opinion about a topic. I guess I should watch my mouth in the future, eh? Pointing out an obvious semantic error through absurdity while discussing the business relation between Linux and Microsoft is something that _doesn't_ apply to the discussion? I think, actually, it is your comment that is wholly OT.
- Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this if funny becausse most of you guys are pumped for the xbox 360 and what makes me more mad is because your mad at sony and not buing the ps3 because of the rootkit problem and the music system of sony is much differrent from the games part yet microsoft blows and you are still pumped by the 360 and they do share the same practices (dont deny)
- reclusivemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg. Fight the FUD!!!
- isasusinfinite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ilyag, your attack seems rooted in the logical fallacy of ad hominem. Please collect your thoughts and attack my viewpoint using a well thought-out counterpoint.
Until that happens, you're just full of hot air. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Go back to Slashdot, you nerds. This is a technology site, not an open source evangelism site.
- karamba_kid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Microsoft Windows = Not my problem :)
- Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Crispin: This isn't a new thing on Digg.
- isasusinfinite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Guh. I feel idiotic having succumb to your trolling post.
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"take a look around this site and you'll see some scary mac fanboys too."
At least Macs are something of which you can speak nicely without coming across as just plain delusional. - TheSentinel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow, only a few comments on the story itself. This is why I hope there is never a politics category on Digg...
As for the link, I hope the "author" who "wrote" the "story" realizes that writing like a 12 year old fanboy doesn't help get the point across. Besides, do we need an article to tell us that the results of a study supported the view of the people who paid for the study? (FWIW, I have Windows, Linux, and Mac. I tend to use whichever is in reach.)
No news = no digg. - Crispin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Why is this news? Save the OS wars for Slashdot please.
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17of7: You're kidding, right?
Man, Windows fanboys are a scary bunch. Who actually *likes* Windows? Everyone I know that uses it just puts up with it. - Matt2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1> One high proses I do is UT2004, and it runs smother in Linux than it ever did in windows.
No it doesn't. - rousehouse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This whole thread has "creditability problems".
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1This study doesn't go nearly far enough. Not only is Windows better than Linux for serving e-commerce applications, it also beats out Linux in nearly every other possible category. It's more stable, more intuitive, and overall better suited for the end user. The only thing Linux is good for is being a junker in the garage that you can constantly work on but which never actually becomes usable.

What is Digg?
