- shrewduser, on 09/29/2008, -2/+31why can't we split the gnome project into gnome-stable and gnome-testing?
testing obviously would be where all the out there wonderful ideas would be free to frolic and breakages wouldn't be as much of an issue, and then we can really speed up the innovation.... - chmstar, on 10/01/2008, -3/+30OM GNOME GNOME GNOME GNOME.
- mohtasham, on 09/30/2008, -0/+17I'm very pleased to see tab browsing in nautilus. That's the feature I was really missing in gnome.
- hamobu, on 09/30/2008, -1/+16I am all for small incremental changes. Not everything needs to be impressive and amazing. Give me small improvements of existing tools that I know how to use, rather then starting anew every few months on a flashy new toy. How about having less disruptions so that we can focus on mundane and humdrum work that we need to do in our day.
- Gezert, on 10/01/2008, -0/+9Good news. Gnome - the best
- arcticblue, on 10/01/2008, -0/+10Now they just need to work on split view.
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 09/30/2008, -1/+9Major changes are probably being planned for Gnome 3.0, so there isn't much sense in "shifting the paradigm" or other such nonsense for what is intentionally an incremental release.
Theres a lot to be said for incremental improvement, too. Just about every version of Gnome after 2.0 has been an incremental improvement, and they've made tremendous progress. You may not think so, but that just proves that you hanve't spend enough time using an early version of Gnome :P - drakethegreat, on 10/01/2008, -0/+8Maybe its just me but I don't see why the author of this article expects a lot to change from 2.22 to 2.24. The version scheme should suggest minor tweaks only. Am I missing something?
- abbathdoom, on 10/01/2008, -0/+7By far and away the biggest new feature in the new Gnome is Empathy and Telepathy. Being able to webcam and voice chat with people on MSN and other networks is HUGE. And by being able to embed that code into any gnome app we will hopefully see a lot of innovation in communicating. Like just off the top of my head, what if future versions of Gnome chess let you webcam and voice chat with your opponent? That would be sweet. Imagine the possibilities of any app being able to integrate voice and video chat.
- MrTea, on 10/01/2008, -0/+6How's the performance with metacity's compositor? Last time I tried it, it wasn't even as good as compiz.
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 09/30/2008, -0/+6People do this all the time, probably just not with a single grand gnome-testing sandbox for all the various projects to use. If they did that, then cross your fingers and hope that no two projects conflict.
Take gvfs/gio for example (the new filesystem backend introduced in 2.22). It was probably worked on for more than the 6 months leading up to 2.22, but it wasn't included in trunk. It would have existed as a separate branch in the code repository, and developers could have worked on it without fear of breaking anythig in an official Gnome release or anything in trunk.
If you're talking about whiz-bang UI, then I would have to say that major UI changes don't belong in a point release anyways, and should be saved for large version bumps like Gnome 3.0 - jadrian, on 10/01/2008, -3/+8KDE new features more eye candy related? Do you even know anything about KDE 4?
Phonon, the new multimedia framework, ever heard of it?
Or Solid, the hardware integration framework?
Or ThreadWeaver for multicore systems?
Plasma? The new desktop interface?
Do you know that KDE libs are being adapted to become multiplatform and will run on windows and mac?
You know they develop KHTML, they're own rendering engine right?
You know they develop KOffice, they're own office suite, and just released the first beta for version 2, right?
Have you seen the cool new apps, like Marble, the geographical map software? Or Dragon Player for video? Or the new browser Dolphin? Or the amazing document viewer Okular?
And on top of that, you've noticed how every freaking application had tons of improvements with each minor release such as KDE 4.0 to KDE 4.1 (just as it is expected from any minor release).
Having an "opinion" on things that are not subjective and you know nothing about is pathetic ;) - molom, on 10/01/2008, -5/+10I like gnome more than any other project, they keep consistent, bring features that are useful, opposed to KDE who seem to bring features that are more eye candy related. Then again, that's just my opinion.
- Overcyn, on 10/01/2008, -1/+6or maybe he just prefers kde....
- srg13, on 10/01/2008, -1/+5After using Gnome as my main desktop for about two years now, I really fail to see lack of proper customisation, nor have I had any problems with performance...
- DomZy, on 10/01/2008, -0/+4It already does this?

- abbathdoom, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3Gnome's version scheme is they bring out a new stable gnome every 6 months and bump it up another X.X2, so 2.26 will be out in 6 months time. It's not a question of whether the version number suggests change, its whether you believe that in 6 months time there will be big changes.
- webNV, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3Great idea bro!
Why not document any such concrete ideas on live.gnome.org? From there it's likely that interested developers actually implement the ideas. - LastDitchHero, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3Nautilus can't browse the network for other Samba machines. It can share just fine but you have to manually type in the network directory of other machines in order to mount the share.
- Kamujin, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2Yes, as an option. It is a well known best practice that you warn the user before you take an action that can be destructive to data. This is not a "vista" thing. Its a "writing good code" thing.
Your "simple solution" fails to account for the fact that humans occasionally make mistakes. If one mistakenly hits the delete key there is no visual cue that the file was even moved to the trash bin. According to your "simple solution" the user need to routinely inspect their trash bin to make sure nothing was accidentally deleted. This is sub-optimal and quite frankly, it makes nautilus look like it was written by amateurs.
Before you respond with the tired argument "It's not deleted until you empty your trash", please consider the following.
1) The original location of the file is lost when moved to the trash. This can make it more difficult to restore the file to its correct location.
2) A large number of intentionally deleted files in the trash bin makes it more difficult to notice the unintentionally deleted file. - AnimeOmega, on 10/01/2008, -1/+3pwnd =]
- ptFoe, on 10/01/2008, -4/+6Still no support for setting the no. lines scrolled by the mouse wheel.
Using webkit for Epiphany was a silly move as unlike Gecko it doesn't have a way to override Gnomes limitation and allow to set number of lines scrolled by the mouse wheel.
The google summer of code work to allow for multiple wallpapers seems to have been discarded

http://gsocblog.jsharpe.net/ - LastDitchHero, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2GVFS and Samba fixed yet?
- weizbox, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2Or you could just find something online and use it? This way you really get what your looking for :) art.gnome.org and gnome-look.org has a good bit of 'gnome' backgrounds, but really you can get them from a lot of other places (deviantart, interfacelift, etc)
- slythfox, on 09/30/2008, -3/+4This is true. I really hope Gnome 2.30 will improve upon Gnome's many faults, such as performance and lack of proper customization.
- Kamujin, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1Can you get a confirmation box BEFORE items are moved to the trash yet?
(No, I am not talking about the confirm before empty trash option) - srg13, on 10/01/2008, -1/+2Nice work copying and pasting your comment from another story ( http://digg.com/linux_unix/Gnome_2_24_is_Out?t=191 ... ), even when two of the three things you said were incorrect and pointed out in the replies there...
So I'll restate - the summer of code work should be coming soon, as it was still too incomplete I believe to make it in to this release. And as for Epiphany using Webkit - it doesn't actually use it by default yet... - brettalton, on 10/01/2008, -1/+2To install the GNOME wallpapers in Ubuntu, look for 'gnome-backgrounds'.
[Be careful, it says 'backgrounds' and not 'wallpapers' like most of their other packages!]
From GNOME 2.14 to 2.22, gnome-backgrounds didn't really change (at all I think), but for 2.24, they have some beautiful photos and SVG graphics (as the article states).
You can also download the .tar.gz of GNOME's 2.24 wallpapers - in case you can't wait for Ubuntu 8.10, Fedora 10, etc. - from...

mirror: http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/universe/g/g ... - directrix13, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1Right. Why would there be anything but incremental changes in a constant increment of time?
- weizbox, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1Samba for me has been working for years. What issues were you having? And btw, Samba isn't something that's gnome-specific
- fatas, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1but they still need larger thumbnails for all the photos
- DomZy, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1wrong, it does do this when you want to upload a picture to digg. I just tried it...
- inactive, on 10/02/2008, -1/+2Why doesn't someone fork the gnome project, period.
The gnome development is really slow. They're just too slow. With the next kubuntu release I'm going to jump in the kde4 bandwagon to see how things are going on there. - tj111, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1I've had the same problem here for a while too. I think it happened after upgrading to hardy, not sure on that though. Very annoying bug.
- srg13, on 10/01/2008, -5/+6I see you haven't tried Gnome lately...
- inactive, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1"Major changes are probably being planned for Gnome 3.0..."
No, they aren't, Icaza said that a few months ago when the KDE4 was all we were talking about. Someone must folk gnome. - brettalton, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1And there is a program called GNOME-Art Next Generation that will actually scour both of those websites and will install themes, wallpapers, etc. with a click of the mouse.

deb: http://download.berlios.de/gnomeartng/gnomeartng-0 ... - srg13, on 10/02/2008, -1/+2"or maybe he just prefers kde...."
Well, clearly he prefers KDE, but the arguments he uses (like 'hardly any noticeable improvements) make it sound a lot like he's just trolling without actually having tried it... - mohtasham, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1That's when you try to open an image using gimp. Suppose you want to upload your pic to digg. There's no way to see a thumbnail using firefox and most other programs.
- Biznarie, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1Well by proper customization he probably means he wants more options like KDE has, fact is Gnome will probably never get most/some of these options because the Gnome team aims to make there environment user friendly, though I'm still satisfied with the amount of customization I would welcome more. The performance is decent in gnome, although there is always room for improvement. If someone really needs more performance they can always use XFCE.
- weizbox, on 10/01/2008, -2/+2So you want two confirmations when deleting something... once when you do it, the other when you clear it from the trash?
A simple solutions is to know what your doing before you do it. Personally, I don't want Gnome looking like Vista with it's over-protective UAC :) - mohtasham, on 10/01/2008, -1/+1I also hope they create thumbnail view of photos in opening and saving dialogs.
- aaaantoine, on 10/02/2008, -0/+0It's not necessary to put web cam and voice chat features directly into Gnome Chess if you already have Empathy. Unless it's a full-screen app. Then I could see integrating web cam support.
You could find other ways to integrate the two apps. Such as adding an "invite to play" button to Empathy if you're playing a multiplayer game. - Cherubim, on 10/01/2008, -14/+8Gnome is crap. Hardly any improvements are noticeable to any user. Time to overhaul it or dump it. KDE pisses all over it.
- inactive, on 10/01/2008, -14/+4A, B, K, D, E, F, U, Gnome...
