- jshabad00, on 10/10/2007, -4/+50But will it run on linux? Or just Ubuntu?
/sarcasm - eean, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Normally the "on Ubuntu" is justified, since they truely are directions for Ubuntu. However the directions given would work on any Linux system, short of the screenshot of Gnome.
- stalefries, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Wow, that interface is a huge improvement. Too bad it's based on 1.x, and not the newer 2.x releases.
- madtinkerer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I've had it running on an ubuntu 7.10 box and a gentoo box. It's slow to start, has a lot of lag while typing (running about 10 characters behind my fingers) and looks kind of dodgy with some out of place icons and odd layout. Check it out, but it's not anywhere near usable yet. I hope they can get it figured out before it comes out of beta.
- puelocesar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9But I think they make better software than Sun.
- tolbs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7It's build on Open Office which is great, so why not just use Open Office?
Some thoughts
- It's on the eclipse platform, i'm guessing IBM will integrate this into Lotus Notes 8 whose interface looks exactly that of symphony's, and also is on the eclipse platform (IBM is really pushing eclipse into it's products, Webphere MQ, Rational Tools, Sametime, Lotus Notes, and now it's Office Suite). The idea that you can open and view an attached document in an email/note is a pretty viable one, and i'm sure it'll be seamless. I'm sure this doesn't fancy diggers as i'm sure no one uses Lotus Notus unless they are forced to within the workplace.
- The fact that IBM is doing this shows that now IBM has a dependence on the OOo project, which means more funding for the OOo. Hopefully this help gets OOo more on par with MS Office. - kettlechips, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7It is closed source. Open Office is LGPL, that means you can make closed-source derivatives.
- jbohlinger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Try disabling Compiz - it works.
- Spo8, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8IBM uses Lotus Notes for internal emails and it's basically a running joke among employees. When it's not crashing, it's lagging or off-setting your cursor from your actual mouse movements. It's almost fun to see how Notes is going to spice up your quest to check your email today. Almost.
So I trust nothing with the Lotus name. - knodi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Why even use Symphony?? Just go right to the source and use Open Office.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Well, it's Eclipse based which means interface is Java/SWT/JFace so there's a huge difference there, OTOH, it's part of a product line (Lotus 8+) and is going to be released eventually as a complete office suite.
- NOFXY, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7can anyone who's tried it say if it's faster at starting up than open office? More features? Nicer look? etc?
- Niten, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It lacks OpenOffice's bibliography database feature at the moment, not sure how they're going to work around that considering that it's seemingly dependent on OpenOffice's database application (which doesn't have an analogue in Symphony).
- posure, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Office 2008 is the Mac version of Office 2007.
- Tenoq, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You fail at reading.
- TheNik, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I'm ready for this to be released for OS X. I'm tired of using NeoOffice (it and OO.o is very ugly) and Office 2008 won't come out until, well, 2008.
Woe is me. :"( - MeneerR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yes. Although the idea was perfect, the execution was a pile of *****. They were way ahead on all the groupware stuff.
Too bad they had trouble with the quality control. IBM still has trouble with this though. Check ouf this funky crashing office tool.
I guess it only has to look pretty to the management - MyEyesWideOpen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I am forced to use Lotus Notes at work. It's a miserable, feature-lacking, unintuitive program and I'll be damned if I'll install a version of it on my home computer. It's the AOL of office programs.
- Niten, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Considering that its UI is based on Eclipse, and Eclipse already runs on OS X, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the OS X version will happen sooner than later...
- Elranzer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah the interface is the one thing this release has over the current OOo 2.x releases. Maybe these guys should just design the interface for OOo and let it be one suite rather than a fork. Also, maybe they can help the folks at the GIMP fix their fugly UI as well.
- ocgstyles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2yep, that works.
- posure, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The mere mentioning of Rational makes me cringe...
- immrlizard, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You are speaking the truth.
We had a small group of users that tried out Notes and I have never been less impressed with anything in my life. We went with outlook and exchange over that and had a 100% uptime with no problems. I can't say the same for Notes. It was pretty but didn't work well. I would rather have something work at the cost of the latest little icons. That is just me I guess. - ocgstyles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Try adding this to your .bashrc:
export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit
The either restart your terminal or do:
source .bashrc
I haven't tested, but I think it will work. Downloading now to try it out... - Niten, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I tried watching Webb Alert once, but Morgan was too busy flirting with the camera to get the news across. I never thought I'd have to say these words, but as a male viewer, I actually found it insulting.
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Hmm.. shame this isn't GPL-licenced. If OOo were to steal this interface I'd very probably switch from Office 2007.
- supradave, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I had trouble installing it with Beryl running. I switched out of it and it installed fine and ran fine in Beryl as well. Don't know about Compiz though.
- colto, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2She also talks briefly about Digg's new features!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Looking at those screenshots they can help at OOo UI too.
- ibnabouna, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3This is nice, especially for those of us who remember Ami Pro and Lotus 1-2-3. However, I would like to see a native Mac OS X version in the near future.
- safaci2000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Same behavior in compiz. That's a pretty significant bug that they really need to fix. The installer uses the java GUI toolkit which for some reason doesn't display properly. That was the case since beryl when it came out, I don't know why they haven't fixed this yet.
Thankfully, the actually gui of the app works fine. So far, it seems like OO wrapped around java that runs slower. It is beta, so hopefully it'll get better. - Cantrellv, on 08/04/2008, -0/+1Taizo Nishimuro Elected to IBM Board of Directors
http://www.sourcerelease.com/corp/pwp?r=emmm80 - angrykeyboarder, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I gather you don't.. Why not?
- niallabrown, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Ideas storm has a suggestion to pre-install Lotus Symphony on dell systems. Please vote up: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/74297/Preins ...
- Herolint, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Considering Notes, I think the "nice mail + calendar application" thing is probably just wishful thinking.
- linkinpark342, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1agreed on the annoying part. my ear is ringing and i only heard a minute of it
- BenWang, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is good, despite years of stagnating, the Lotus brand name still has some recognition amongst the old generation of pointy headed bosses. Add to that the Ubuntu + Linux buzzwords and you've got a potential winner. Note that despite OOo's current stable version being 2.3, IBM has choosen to fork from version 1.x, signifying their intention of taking this fork in a different direction from OOo 2.X.
Maybe IBM could add a nice Mail + Calender application to OOo - jbohlinger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I tried those exact instructions and it is only giving me a blank screen...
- dukeinlondon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Although I am happy that Linux has a flag bearer in Ubuntu but office suite is not for Ubuntu only. The instructions maybe but not the software
- specialK16, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Funny thing is that after all the burries and blockings, someone will eventually click on those links.
- Herolint, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I'm sure there are uses for Office 2008, but for the type of "office" work I do, Pages and Nisus are both great for word processing and Numbers makes Excel look like an old DOS program. Keynote has always been better than PowerPoint.
I suppose Excel is great for some things, but all I've ever used it for was invoicing, budgets, and simple stuff like that. Numbers makes these kinds of documents much easier and prettier than Excel can.
So, if you just looking for a nicer interface and better speed than NeoOffice, it is already here for OS X. You don't need Office 2008. if you are one of those rare folks who actually uses all the features of Office 2008, then I guess you do have to wait. - dukeinlondon, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Windows did well way before Linux was credible and the main competitor was a very tightly and unified provider called Apple....
- puelocesar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Have you ever used Apple iWork '08? That leaves everything else in the dust :)
And this from a guy who uses Ubuntu too (but have a Hackintosh for fun) - mikewhite314, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1it changes your file associations automatically and has ugly file icons
- specialK16, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2I love it. Took me a while to make it work, but I love it!
- hoodedrobin, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Wow... She annoys the ***** ***** out of me...
She needs a side order of learn to ***** speak in front of a ***** camera. - hellmit, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0Nice
- hellmit, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0emphasis
- angrykeyboarder, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2Actually it's a semi-clone of Office 2000. I love how Linux fanboys/MS Bashers compare Linux apps to 3-10 year old versions of Microsoft Software.
OpenOffice.org is very close to Office 2000, a bit less so to XP even less so to 2003 and not even close to Office 2007. Once you learn Office 2007 it leaves everything else in the dust.
And this is from a guy who spends most of his time in Ubuntu.. - robvdl, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2I installed this on Feisty when it was announced a few days ago, and had a quick play with it already. One thing that instantly caught my attention is that the widgets are windows 2000 styled, it would have been nicer if they were GTK and blend in better with the desktop.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I couldn't find the source code on the IBM site, is Symphony even open source? If it isn't, isn't it a GPL violation if IBM derive of Open Office but don't provide full souce to Symphony? I know they donate code back to Open Office, but do they have the full source code available? -
