- adila01, on 03/28/2008, -0/+77Is it just me or does it seem like Open Office development is much faster these days. In a couple of months Open Office 3.0 will be released with many many new and awesome features. I wonder if this is due to IBM playing an active role in its development.
- iXneonXi, on 03/28/2008, -15/+71Does it still look like Word '97?
- goldenratiophi, on 03/28/2008, -0/+37I never thought I'd see someone try to link to their blog in a Digg comment and FAIL.
- tapo, on 03/28/2008, -2/+31I do, because I don't have Microsoft Office or the money to spend on it.
Besides, some of us just want a basic word processor/spreadsheet/presentation editor and don't care about the other features that MS office provides. - antdude, on 03/28/2008, -1/+29Just download and overinstall?
- TheZorch, on 03/28/2008, -7/+34Because there is no business in the world that can keep up with an open source development team made up of thousands of programmers.
- slippiefist, on 03/28/2008, -26/+51Have they redesigned the 1995-ish interface yet?
- lordtyros, on 03/28/2008, -5/+29Yes.
- ralphthemagi, on 03/28/2008, -2/+23Improvements are good, but OpenOffice.org needs something more. Writer is fine, and a perfect replacement for Word. The problem is Calc. Excel is, unfortunately, the standard, and Calc has problems measuring up in terms of features. Sadly, most businesses actually use Excel for things like regression, and Calc is ill-equipped to do that. Granted, you shouldn't really be using a spreadsheet application for this sort of thing, but people do; and if OOo want's to give Office a run for it's money, they are going to have to oust Excel.
- Senn, on 03/28/2008, -3/+20Picked this up this morning during an Arch Linux update, great stuff.
- motang, on 03/28/2008, -1/+18You can let OpenOffice do the auto update.
- geniuslocimusic, on 03/28/2008, -2/+19OK so its not quite MS Office yet, but the vast majority of casual users do one of two things with it Type,Save or Type,Print. I haven't missed office yet.
Furthermore, I think its swell. - spacepikey, on 03/28/2008, -3/+19***** sake, I just installed 2.3 two seconds ago.
- sloppychris, on 03/28/2008, -2/+17A redesign is planned for 3.0. Desperately needed, in my opinion.
- ahz1, on 03/28/2008, -0/+14OOo 2.x does not have real auto update. OOo 2.x only has *notification* of updates
- Planets, on 03/28/2008, -3/+17Already using 3.0. =P
- simpleboy, on 03/28/2008, -1/+14Does anybody know how to upgrade 2.4 from 2.3?
- inactive, on 03/28/2008, -2/+15whoa whoa. whats up buddy? your windows update fail on you or something?
- earlycj5, on 03/28/2008, -2/+14And people don't *actually* use Linux? Guess I typed this in my imagination, I thought I was *using* openSUSE on this machine. Huh, thanks for that, I must be using Windows or Mac since people must not *actually* use Linux.
- craigyjack, on 03/28/2008, -1/+13that is planned for the 3.0 release
- Forma, on 03/28/2008, -1/+12Correct
- Atomic1fire, on 03/28/2008, -0/+10As far as better goes
Yes
Google Docs is a watered down web product which has its advantages - AManWithNoName, on 03/28/2008, -3/+13OO.O is a great program. I honestly only use Word when people specify that I do any more, and even then I write it in OO.O before I transfer it over.
- sloppychris, on 03/28/2008, -0/+10The poster compared OpenOffice's current development speed to what it was in the past, not the speed of OpenOffice compared to other software.
- nixfu, on 03/28/2008, -1/+11>Does it still look like Word '97?
No ...looks a little better.

- HonestAbe, on 03/28/2008, -1/+10HOORAY FOR DRAGGING COLUMNS! I've wanted this for a while. Does MS Office have it?
- nationdigg, on 03/28/2008, -0/+9Hey - I know it's not as powerful as some paid-for packages BUT It will do pretty much everything you actually need and IT'S FREE!
Digg for Open Office (I love you guys) - IHaveIssues, on 03/28/2008, -0/+9Thanks for the laugh!
- tapo, on 03/28/2008, -3/+12I don't see the spreadsheet/presentation editor built into wordpad. It's also incredibly inferior when compared to Writer or Word's basic features.
- daftman, on 03/28/2008, -2/+10Myopic observation.
Desktop Linux interest only peak about 7-8 years ago. Microsoft has windows for 20 and Apple has the desktop environment since the 80s. Look at the speed that Linux rise and you will notice that it is lighting fast. Also keep in mind of other Linux aspects that are increasing as well, e.g embedded, cluster, virtualization, server, etc. - LastDitchHero, on 03/28/2008, -0/+8Leaps and bounds, and even has a downloadable plugin to export and import documents and spreadsheet from Google Docs. Also you have the portableapps version.
- jabela, on 03/28/2008, -0/+8Guys I don't think you should complain too much... This is a free tool and you have to pay for Microsoft Office. For most everyday users it is more than adequate to do what you need and there is one function I find absolutely hands-down beats MS Office and that is the PDF export. Its so much better and allows you to create bookmarks and everything... Before using Writer I had to use a PDF printing utility from MS Word.
- psyclonic, on 03/28/2008, -5/+12OOo doesn't replace MS Office yet but for those of us with multiple machines, it's the way to put a decent tool on all of them - and pay only one license to MS for when it's really needed.
- dtfinch, on 03/28/2008, -0/+797 looked better than any version that came afterward.
- diggrim, on 03/28/2008, -0/+7I like how there's an advert for MS Office on this page
- Incoming9000, on 03/28/2008, -1/+8Not entirely. In most cases yes, but on Ubuntu for example if you have, say, version 2.3 from the official repository and you don't want to wait for it to be updated, first you have to remove it and then install the new version.
Installing on top may cause problems and even may not be possible as the system might detect a conflict between the different versions. After removing the old version get the deb tar file from one of the OOo mirrors then extract it to a temporary directory then type 'sudo dpkg -i *.deb' on the DEBS directory inside the temporary dir you extracted the files to. After that install the 'openoffice.org-debian-menus_2.4-9268_all.deb' inside the 'desktop-integration' dir. - LastDitchHero, on 03/28/2008, -0/+6BTW, use the quickstart. Even MS Office cheats by starting up the "office source engine" during startup. Takes me 6 seconds to launch Writer or Calc from the quickstart.
- tapo, on 03/28/2008, -1/+7I'm not backpedaling. Wordpad doesn't even have the ability to spell check.
- sirhomer, on 03/28/2008, -0/+6It was me who stole your bike. And I also use Linux. Sometimes while on your bike.
- jm1234567890, on 03/28/2008, -0/+6no
- inactive, on 03/28/2008, -3/+8Thats great.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 03/28/2008, -4/+9> "You mean, does it still look like Word before its UI was infested by bloat a la Office 2003 and beyond?"
I don't get this. How is, say, Office 2003's UI "bloated" compared to OpenOffice.org's UI? I actually think OO.o's UI talks up more visual space than any version of Office, but maybe that's just me... - SneakyPhil, on 03/28/2008, -2/+7It's really a shame that you haven't made the switch either.
- rynvndrp, on 03/28/2008, -0/+5Maybe OOo should create a new application designed specifically for statistics and graphs that would not only compete with excel but be a more proper solution
- sarixe, on 03/28/2008, -0/+5i'm not that brave...
- dtfinch, on 03/28/2008, -0/+5All it ever told me was "Checking for an update failed."
- LastDitchHero, on 03/28/2008, -0/+5When you run a business will you use pirate copies of MS Office? Just don't let any disgruntled employee find out cause when they leave they will rat you out. Microsoft turns a blind eye to individuals cause it would look bad to sue them but no one will care about Microsoft suing a business out of existence for using pirated software. So yea Office if you don't pay for it will cost you sleep worrying that someone will sue you. I have to explain this to clients all the time who "want that extra copy".
- SteveIsTheDude, on 03/28/2008, -1/+6Personally... I'm so glad he has not switched to Linux... He would be such a drag at our Ubuntu party... Oh my!!! Ha Ha ha Ha Ha ha Ha
