Their binary driver isn't bad. It's generally good, actually... but it could be a lot better. I've hit plenty of snags on several machines, and I suspect that many of them could have been prevented (or made less significant) by the driver being open -- things like X being completely borked to temporary incompatibilities with new kernel versions.
I look forward to seeing what they (eventually) release. Competition is good -- and I'd like to see both ATI and Nvidia able to compete in Linux/Unix markets. - schestowitz, on 01/11/2008, -3/+3Brilliant news! NVIDIA would have a lot to win if it goes open source. It would receive patches from the users, not to mention goodwill value.
I hope the rumours are true. Intel and AMD already do some open source in this area. NVIDIA remains the black sheep (and black box) -- for now.
