- shrewduser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+39whats got me excited is the rate at which linux is growing and improving... whereas only a year or so ago companies we're still hesitant about linux... now their diving in the deep end...
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -4/+27Intel and AMD are already there. NVidia should do it too. It's inevitable anyway, so sooner is batter than later.
- DarkStalker, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22There are filesystems out there that allow you to use case-insensitivity... but I don't know why you'd need it.
- Matteos, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20Hey, better, better, better... swing better...
- NinjaBoy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19i just converted my company to all linux server.
- Lorian, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21I actually find case insensitivity annoying.
Each to their own eh? - NinjaBoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16don't feed the troll guys
- chris4404, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Your companies inside a Linux server?
- Xyphus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Now if we could just get Creative Labs to release some working X-Fi drivers, things would really be looking up in the way of support for Linux.
- avisgoth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12He has more than one company? Inside a single server no less?
- spudnic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10They're, not their.
I hate myself. - jonnyeh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Check to make sure that proper drivers have been released first. Just because ATI released their hardware specs, it does not mean that ATI cards will all of a sudden run like a dream in linux. It will take the open-source community quite a bit of time to get a decent driver going (with 3d support). In the meantime, the nvidia closed source driver works quite well. I'd still recommend nvidia for linux at the current time.
- dalittle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Welcome to the internet. Please read up on the going on in the computer world since the year 2000 and the number of businesses that run linux webservers, databases, etc (like google).
- el_taco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9only 2 months after I bought a new nvidia card cause I couldn't get my ati card to work with fglrx drivers.. uugh
- cygnus2112, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Let's be honest, fellas. ATI has sucked major balls at driver support. AMD has been smacked around seriously by Intel. While competition is always good, I don't see a marriage of AMD + ATI or Cisco + Linksys as anything except corporate politics releasing more inferior product lines and attempts to re-brand to bail out a sinking ship. If anyone has examples of similar tech mergers releasing better hardware, please illuminate, because I can't think of any.
- unitedatheism, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10ATI never gave a ***** about open-source, now they've just said: hey! we're going to be kind to open source! And them everybody look back angered with nvidia... First: nvidia's driver works, right here, right now. Second: they've released the first accelerated vendor-supported video driver for Linux, so I'm grateful. Third and most important: I'm quite unsure that we will be seeing a better open source driver against the proprietary one anytime soon, so unless you're a Debian-hey-I-spit-on-every-single-proprietary-bit-wich-is-evil kind of user, we don't have much to worry about, anyway let's all hope that Nvidia come along with the same solution for open source!
Last, I'll trust that ATI got some decent graphic driver when I see it, until that day, I'll be avoiding it. - Amablue, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8You're underestimating the number of users that use linux as a primary OS. They'd be spending money on just a few of their employees to get a few thousand more customers.
- el_taco, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8funny you mention Cisco + Liinksys.. Cisco is phasing out the brand.
- FortyCaliber, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I'll take that bet.
Guess what? I win. - Ramble, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Inside a server? That must be a nightmare for health and safety inspectors.
- SPThom, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Why exactly do you need case-insensitivity? I don't see the need for it on a desktop environment. The only reason I could see it being useful is on websites to make it easier (lazier) to link to files, but then, I'd still recommend you use the correct case in your links, in case you're forced to migrate to another environment (in the event IIS explodes, etc.).
But if I'm missing something, please, do tell. - avisgoth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Oh yes please. Painful that Creative STILL has no Linux driver support.
- chrisu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7looks like I will be switching to ATI next time I upgrade...
- TheHydrogens, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I don't know if you are an idiot who thinks he is promoting RP, or an ***** who wants to make RP supporters look like idiots, but quit it.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Really? Did i miss something about VB1.5?
- brharri1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Needed to be said.
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4They should say, "MS is going fo fall sooner than later but later than now." That would cover all their bases.
- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+42008 is the Year of the Linux Desktop!
- shawnanigans, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Assuming that if Linux was better supported by hardware companies, and it could be installed for free on standard desktops it could go to 5%. Which is miniscule in big picture, but given the millions of desktops in the world (at least 100 million) this equals to 5 million at least possible users. To spend the money on a few months times for 5 developers to potentially reach millions of customers is a really good investment.
- nixfu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Just do this:
$ set completion-ignore-case on
$ shopt -s nocaseglob
To make bash case-insensitive.
You can also run Linux on a number of case insensitive filesystems if you 'want' to...personally I like having 26^x more variations I can use for each filename.
Still....I think its lazy and limiting. Maybe you think Linux should use drive letters instead of mount points too huh? Who would ever have more than 24 mount points anyway right? - Zixaphir, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Your assumption is that Linux users do not appriciate gaming. You are horribly incorrect in such an assumption. In my experience with Linux, most Linux users keep around a copy of Windows JUST for their games, and nothing else. The entire idea of having to keep such a bug-filled wastepile of an OS such as Windows around for anything irritates the heck outta them, and quite literally hampers creating new converts to the Linux arena. How many linux newbies do you hear the question, "How do I get my Windows games working on Linux?" from? Plenty. There's a plethora of Linux users who ask as such, and most quickly learn of tools such as Wine or Cedega. The open-source-ery of GPU drivers is one step closer to a world where Proprietary OSes, such as Windows, will not need to exist, for a superiour open standard will always exist.
tl;dr: GTFO, troll. - miztaken, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3OH OH! I want in on that bet!
- ilolled, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Quick nvidia, there's 2% market share to be got! Give up all your specs.
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7No *****. I stopped using ATI cards a long time ago. Their drivers notoriously sucked ass. Their supprt has been horrid. I really wanted to get an HDTV card for my HTPC so I decided to take a chance on ATI again. They bit me in the ass yet again. Their drivers were a pain in the ass to get working yet again. Their software is also buggy as hell. ATI is great if you love working with substandard drivers and applications.
- miztaken, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Now you really didn't expect to get away with saying that did you? More and more people who have been holding off on switching to linux just because of their games now can. Since Virtual Box 1.5 came out, a lot more people are going to be able to game in Linux. w00t.
- nixfu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Except no one does, so no applications code for it so if you tried it you would run into all sorts of issues.
- EntangledPhysx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3my school has HP/Compaq computers running windows XP with 1GB RAM and an AMD x2 4200+.... and they're about half the speed of my x2 4200+ machine with 2 GB RAM (but running Vista with all the pretty stuff on). I still say they are garbage...
- shawnanigans, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2ATI doesn't have bad device drivers at all. In fact their drivers are great. It's the fact that they force you into so many ***** programs like the catalyst controller and their media player when you install the driver. And never ever ever get an All-In-Wonder I spent 3 days trying to get that ***** remote it came with to work.
- shavenlunatic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2to all the people trolling saying "who gives a fuk about linux users?" ..not just linux users will benefit from this move in policy.. are you too ***** blinkered by your urges to post crap about windows ftw?
- shavenlunatic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2same boat... :(
- captcanuk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2What about Intel? When will they make their specs available without NDA and on time (i.e. 965 specs)? AMD's graphics cards are more complex and they are opening up their specs without NDA but Intel has crappy chipset graphics and still hasn't released without NDA?
- Kier, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2ATI never gave a *****...but AMD apparently do. After all, Servers = Linux, AMD
- trogdor282, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2ebay :)
- straxus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Careful how you word things. Some nut will come along and think your comment means that none of Creative's cards have Linux drivers.
- ElRayQuieres, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Did you miss the whole AMD thing?
- Kier, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I did a less than 3 sign....but Digg seem to have cut off everything after.
AMD hearts Servers, and wants in their pants. - norman619, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I doubt Linux is even on their marketing radar.
- gaminggeek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1actually nvidia supports linux for the 3d workstation market not the gaming one the gaming support is a nice side effect
- CCmachined, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1uhm, who buys a dedicated sound card nowadays?
- niallabrown, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Same here. Sorry nvidia but you got to get with the times. It's a matter of sooner or later at this point and later is not the intelgent move here.
