- schestowitz, on 10/13/2008, -3/+6Here's a smart CIO/equiv. Rather than let children become 'addicted' -- as Gates called it -- to a particular vendor, they teach them transferable skills using Free(dom) software to build their /own/ economy. All countries should do this.
- frink, on 10/14/2008, -0/+2I also went to school in NSW (no PCs back then). This is part of an election promise by Kevin Rudd. The problem is that it's just computers, no infrastructure, this has to be supplied by the states. If each and every one of these computers has Edubuntu installed, that's a massive saving on software that could be used to fund the infrastructure as well. And my tax dollars aren't going to Redmond.
Kids will learn that there is an alternative to closed software, that they can control the software and not the software control them. Then their parents will learn too. I hope this happens
Everybody wins. Except Microsoft. Poor old Microsoft. - nixw, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1It would be very cool to see more kids given the opportunity to experience Linux. No doubt Microsoft would swoop in with massive discounts on their software, extra lobbying etc if this was ever close to happening. If they were to go through with it Ubuntu or Edubuntu would be a great choice. There is an insane amount of educational software (even beyond the awesomeness of Open Office) for free within the Ubuntu repositories that kids would massively benefit from.

Mainly because the whole thing would crumble if they relied on it and then and then made there education evolve around it, then if a kid has his stolen, what happens then?? give him a spare? nah! not gonna happen, I went to a NSW secondary school (in australia thats junior high and senior high combined). more focus on computer labs and teachers! I never had a computer teacher that knew what they were talking about... never had one.
