- ruiacp, on 01/29/2008, -49/+506There are some myths they should bust:
-MS patent violation myth
-Linux is still to hard to use
-Windows is cheaper than Linux
etc... - torrzilla, on 01/29/2008, -1/+369I reject your operating system and substitute my own.
- tjordan83, on 01/29/2008, -68/+331Vista is not the end of Microsoft, calm down. You know what happens when you buy a copy of Vista just by itself? You don't get all the bloat ware. You get a clean copy. If you want to bitch at someone then bitch at the manufactures like Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. they are the ones who add all the crap. Vista is not the biggest piece ever created. If you don't like UAC turn it off, I mean you're all experts here so you should know what you're installing and what system utilities you're using. I think it's funny that people say a Vista PC is so expensive and then go and tout Macs because we all know they are a dime a dozen. And for the last time Ubuntu is not as user friendly as a Mac or Vista, get over it. I would also like to add that I own a Dell D830 with Vista Business on it, I am a Network Admin at my company so I use it all day and sometimes on evening and weekends and I have never had any major problems with it or any of the other Vista machines my company has. I think it's maybe froze up once or twice but that is it and I know for a fact Macs, XP and Linux do the same thing, stop acting like they don't. How do I know this? My gf has a Mac, I myself have XP and Ubuntu at home and I have a few Linux boxes running here at work.
- sirhomer, on 01/29/2008, -15/+227Unrelated: MythBusters is such a cool show.
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -7/+142Who cares what Grant would do? I'll use whatever Kari recommends. Rowr.
- rhabd0mancer, on 01/29/2008, -9/+138What does Grant recommend? He's the only engineer on the show.
- chingy1788, on 01/29/2008, -17/+140Linux not for Gamers (yet)
- hassanchop13, on 01/29/2008, -8/+93linux is relatively difficult for some people, even on ubuntu. if you want to get the basic features out of it, they are all good to go. if you know exactly what you're doing, you can get the advanced features. but if you want your mouse that may not be the most popular to have all its buttons working and you dont know that much about linux, you're going to spend a few hours reading forums and getting people's advice on how to do it as opposed to sticking a CD with a driver on it in the tray. that could change, and its not the fault of linux as much as it is the developers, but its just how it is. this is based on my experience with ubuntu 7.10, it took me a while to get used to it, but once i did, it was worth it. but most people dont care to go through the hassle.
- rbeims, on 01/29/2008, -5/+89Jamie touches a point that is very important these days, and that is not (only) related to computer industry. The problem is that the "big companies". They are always trying to get out the most of the recent technology, and this is how it should be. But at the same time they are trying (and most of the times succeeding) in locking people into their own stuff.
As the writer states, technology is good, but it should be implemented in a way that it doesn't annoy people. Just because you *can* put something to make a beep when some event happens, this doesn't mean you *have to*. - inactive, on 01/29/2008, -10/+67this is not normal, a thought out comment, praising vista, on a story about ubuntu being better than vista, on digg and its not been dugg down into oblivion by linux/apple fanboys, whats going on?
- enchantedsky, on 01/29/2008, -2/+57Linux does not support drivers for all devices, but it is not Linux's fault; rather, it is a manufacturers fault for creating Windows-only drivers
Key example: My sister-in-law hates Windows, so I offered to install 32-bit Ubuntu 7.10 on her computer. She loves it, Ubuntu even recognized her wireless PCI card without drivers. Then she calls me up one day, "Hey, I can't print". I drive over, and check her computer, do some research on the Internet, and realize there are no drivers for Dell printers (which are rebranded Lexmark printers) Even generic inkjet drivers do not recognize the printer. She had to switch back to Windows because she needed to print out an important document for school.
The irony is that people are worshipping Dell for supporting Ubuntu, yet there are NO drivers for various Dell devices, such as their Dell printers to work with Ubuntu! I hope Ubuntu's next LTS release has better generic printer support - sinatosk, on 01/29/2008, -9/+62just in case... FTA:
In the tech world this phenomenon is known as “software bloat” or “feature bloat.” It's a well-documented problem and a frequent complaint about Windows OSs—Vista in particular. In addition to being buggy, the extra features tend to bog down your system by demanding more processing power and memory. Computer-makers: Don't load up operating systems with features and then make us sweat to figure out how to get rid of the fat.
Most features can be set up as options. Why not start with a computer loaded with basic stuff that works 100 percent of the time? Then, give us the option of adding the bells and whistles. There's another solution available to consumers: Switch to a Linux-based OS such as Ubuntu. Since most Linux OSs are free, there's no business reason to bloat up the system with feature frills.
And high-tech companies—stop messing with us on your treadmill of upgrades while making the old stuff obsolete. It may be that any software company that didn't routinely upgrade its product would go out of business. But what if the rest of the world worked this way? Oh, I lost a sock. I need to get a whole new wardrobe because the replacement sock is version 2.0.1, and the stores now only sell version 2.0.3 - reuscel, on 01/29/2008, -2/+54What did Kari recommend? Whatever it was, I'll bet she looked wonderful recommending it.
- gaqua, on 01/29/2008, -2/+53I, too, trust the opinion of any pale redhead with a cute smile when it comes to technical issues.
- RunawayElf, on 01/29/2008, -5/+51We don't all play WoW exclusively. The emulation for most other games is rather... limited.
- joshuaer, on 01/29/2008, -2/+47That should be the Linux marketing campaign
Make sure your kids to homework and not play games. Make sure your next computer runs Linux! - Senn, on 01/29/2008, -16/+59Aww, did someone say something bad about Vista?
- protogenxl, on 01/29/2008, -4/+46Walrus Power Activate!!!
- norman619, on 01/29/2008, -12/+47These guys just do not want to admit that Linux is still a tech's OS.
- BigW, on 01/29/2008, -0/+35I'm sure he recommends that you just forget about the PC and build a robot. ;-)
- archiesteel, on 01/29/2008, -0/+34First, Web statistics isn't an accurate measurement of market share (for many reasons). Second, Ubuntu *is* Linux, so it shares some of those Linux numbers. Third, it's not the popularity that counts, it's the quality. Would you say that, because there are more Neons than Porsches, that the latter are not as good?
- TotalHalibut, on 01/29/2008, -4/+37Great.. spreadsheets in space. Truly cutting edge.
- sockpuppets, on 01/29/2008, -5/+37O hai, welkum to mythbusters.
http://icanhascheezburger.files.wordpress.com/2008 ... - Firehunter, on 01/29/2008, -14/+46I guess I am going to have to go find a grease monkey script to filter out all this, "Vista is teh suxor", "Vista is full of Bloat" or "Ubuntu is teh best OS Evar!', junk. I would just block the offending categories, but there are some good articles among the mess of stuff I have to sort through.
I have Vista on my desktop, my and my wife's laptop, her desktop, and the media center pc. Every single copy I either paid for or came with the system. They all run perfectly, better than XP. My father also has Vista on his machine that I built for him. I have received 1 support call from him. That was related to driver/software issue for his really old multimedia keyboard. A new one fixed that problem.
I agree with the comment made above. It's the PC manufacturers who load Vista up with the bloat. The MC PC and Laptop both came from well known distributors. I spent probably a half hour to 45 minutes removing all that unnecessary software and cleaning it up. The other copies were fresh installs and have been find since day 1.
Also, I have Ubuntu (I think Gutsy) on my server. That runs flawlessly too and is much easier to configure for the web hosting and backup purposes. I have used Mac OSX and it is also an excellent OS, but it doesn't fit my needs. - jrak, on 01/29/2008, -4/+33Linux is not that hard to use, certainly not anymore. People sometimes underestimate the time they spent learning to use windows. This includes the time and energy spent dealing with or preventing malware issues. Just a thought.
- KirbyMeister, on 01/29/2008, -9/+36Well more people care about linux than mac
- VeritasAequitas, on 01/29/2008, -1/+27My room mate is an engineer do you want his opinion of what computer OS is better. Just cause he's an engineer doesn't mean he knows what he's talking about when it comes to OS's. That being said though I agree with Jamie on the subject to a certain degree I don't know that he has any better qualifications. Just saying being an engineer doesn't mean you know everything about everything.
- VIPAccess, on 01/29/2008, -3/+28The whole article is well worth the read.
- mwalker05, on 01/29/2008, -3/+27grant just strikes me as the mac type
- TritonX, on 01/29/2008, -0/+24Maybe their corporate sponsors would prefer them not to.
- socalrob, on 01/29/2008, -5/+29So is he like performing a new mythbusters test of whats more stable Vista or Linux or something?
- bj1989, on 01/29/2008, -0/+24"Oh, I lost a sock. I need to get a whole new wardrobe because the replacement sock is version 2.0.1, and the stores now only sell version 2.0.3. "
Spot on. - Nougat, on 01/29/2008, -3/+26Moreover, people who don't want to go through that hassle shouldn't *have* to go through that hassle. Yes, I am someone who likes to mess around with computers and figure out how to make them sing. I understand that most people just want to use the damned thing, and that is as valid a position as mine.
That's what really grinds me about all the "you just have to [obscure command line], you n00b" stuff I see. - ligyron, on 01/29/2008, -5/+28You're right, a lot of the bloatware is what the manufacturer installs. It's just advertisement really, trials and stuff, and helps lower the price. It takes a matter of 5 minutes to uninstall all that stuff when you get your new computer. I don't see what the problem is. I got a new notebook from Dell last week with Vista and it's been working great
- rcflyr, on 01/29/2008, -1/+24You made me log in to digg you up...
- Todash19, on 01/29/2008, -3/+26She can iron my shirt anytime
- aigulf, on 01/29/2008, -0/+22I'd like to see them bust a windows myth in typical mythbusters fashion.....with about 100 lbs of high explosives, detonated with the help of retired FBI Agent Frank Doyle.
- mykool, on 01/29/2008, -4/+25Now if he would just promote Ubuntu on his show would be a big help to get the word out, Im sure by just wearing a hat or t-shirt people will notice and want to know what it is and then maybe try it out.
- K4Lic0, on 01/29/2008, -0/+20they're not interns idiot..
- h2g242, on 01/29/2008, -2/+22How about digging the whole article instead of just the 'windows bashing' section? Don't get me wrong, I love a good ole' Microsoft curb stomp, but the entire article on popsci.com was very well done.
- chingy1788, on 01/29/2008, -2/+22but he has a robot with a hammer/axe on the end, actually kinda like a crowbar (HL ftw)
- Tyr7BE, on 01/29/2008, -0/+19The range of programs is anything but limited. Back when I first switched to Linux I found the same thing, but as I got used to it and started using more and more programs, I now find the opposite - I can't get my Linux programs on XP and it's very frustrating. It's all about what you're used to.
- noamchomskeet, on 01/29/2008, -19/+38I bought Vista business by itself, it's completely clean, and not "bloated" with features. I installed it on my Macbook and using only the Apple drivers, and it works simply put. I use it everyday for consulting type work, Excel charts, Statistic applications and tons of Powerpoint presentations, etc. I find it very stable, and actually more stable than OSX when I do the same type of work on both. I've had zero viruses, zero extra processes running in the background.
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -2/+20I am a systems engineer, and as such my opinion matters.
So listen up, here is the solution:
Until Microsoft goes bankrupt, use whatever the ***** OS you prefer. DONE. - Kazbaeden, on 01/29/2008, -2/+20I agree 100%. I've been running vista ultimate on a 3 year old Athlon 64 3000+, with 1GB RAM and a Geforce 6600GT. I really can't tell the difference between boot time from XP, and thanks to super fetch photoshop starts in about 10 seconds compared to over 30 in XP. The sharing center, sync center, and reworked sharing privledges really make my life a hell of a lot easier when working with my notebook. I also appreciate little things, like the fact that when I rename files only the file name and not the extension is highlighed.
So after using and liking Vista for so long, I began to wonder why other people hate it so much. Then I bought a brand new compaq computer and booted up to a desktop filled with over 30 icons for crapware. It literally took me an hour to uninstall all this *****, and when uninstalling 30 programs in a row, UAC starts to become a real hassle. So when people go out and buy a new computer their first experience is one of frustration at UAC and uninstalling a bunch of crap. - DownFromTheDeep, on 01/29/2008, -3/+21yes, ubuntu is awesome. it also looks awesome w/ compiz-fuzion.
- drgmdp, on 01/29/2008, -1/+19BREAKING NEWS: new generations abandon computers, get back to sports and vandalism
- slvrbullet87, on 01/29/2008, -4/+20@mykool, if you are going to dual boot windows to run everything then linux is just taking up room on your system
