My genealogist parents can use Linux now
happylinuxthoughts.blogspot.co… — My parents currently use Windows ME (believe it or not) on a fairly old computer. According to them, their computer crashes quite often, which is not a surprise at all. In fact, I'm surprised it's still in a usable state.

- holydope, on 11/19/2007, -1/+2Glad to hear you plan to convert them. Something I like to do before I convert someone is get them used to as many open source applications as I can, like switch them to Open Office, Firefox and Pidgin. This lessens the "what the hell is this" factor when they log in to Linux for the first time. It already seems familiar to them.
More on this here: http://linuxbraindump.org/2007/09/12/7-ways-to-get ... - estaticd, on 11/19/2007, -1/+2Dugg! -- PAF is a killer app for some folks... aren't there online applications for this sort of thing?
My father is a genealogical author of several books and has hundreds of contributions to various periodicals (small world, eh?) I think he is hogtied into using Word unfortunately, import filters for OO.org will NOT properly work for the type of documents he's using it for. he's got 1000+ page documents using every imaginable feature of Word.
I was pretty astounded that he had lots of macros holding the documents together - totally MacGyver-ish, and definitely NOT the best solution for DTP - works for him though. - schestowitz, on 11/19/2007, -5/+1Parents are probably the hardest to covert because they resist change the most. As for parents who have rarely used a computer, that's a different situation altogether. Young people are the easiest to persuade to explore.
So, if you managed to have your parents move to Linux, well done!
