OEMs will be able to do it, but Ubuntu is in the same situation Microsoft is in- and can't/won't include DVD support for the exact same reasons.
Yes, that's right, Windows can't play DVDs without third-party software. Yes, that third-party software is almost always included with OEM windows... - tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Doesn't Freespire let you choose a complete Free install and one with proprietary codecs?

BTW, I'm planning to dualboot XP and Ubuntu. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
I just have Linspire and have not downloaded Freespire yet. However, here is a link to their forums where you can ask about this.

Xine is is in CNR.
Now if you want to check out their DVD player with all the bells and whistles,it's right here:

- burtonbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All I ask for is a prompt during or shortly after the install, which asks you if you would like to install support for "restricted" media formats (DVD, mp3, etc). This would also have to warn you that doing so may be illegal or course.
- greatromance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've also heard that Linspire had some out of box DVD support, but haven't looked too much into it. Does anyone know if Freespire has out of box support as well or no?
- Iandefor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ignoring the fact that they couldn't include DVD support and still be legal in the US and most of Europe, who'll pay licensing fees for a codec that directly contradicts the whole point of Ubuntu (High-quality operating system built from Free Software)? If Fluendo really does get around to producing a legal codec, the closest it'll ever get to a default install in Ubuntu is in Multiverse, at best.
