- Cupantae, on 05/11/2009, -4/+24Linux? Unix? This should be in software.
- bsonline, on 05/12/2009, -1/+16So.... I install an application that allows me to make shortcuts to web only websites whose only benefit is that it has a little toolbar at the bottom that could have been done with a little jscript or even an iFrame?
Please, fill me in on what I am missing. Sarcasm aside, I know there has to be more to this than...that? - jkroge, on 05/12/2009, -1/+16This is not really a challenge to Adobe AIR. It is just an instance of Firefox for a single website.
- DonCarcharo, on 05/12/2009, -0/+12There is slightly more to it than that, though the usefulness of something like Prism is still subjective. I'm a web developer and I use mini browsers (Fluid which is just like Prism but based on Webkit) to isolate my work (or play) from the main browser. The main benefit for me is that the dedicated mini-browser can't tie up my normal web browser. So if I'm loading up scripts in my main browser while using Netflix Watch Now in the dedicated browser it's not going to hang the video (or vice versa).
Exceptionally useful? Not really. But it is more than just a shortcut. - ldavid, on 05/12/2009, -1/+11If you say that Prism is a "A first direct challenge to Adobe AIR" you would be incorrect.
The concept of Prism was in fact before Adobe Air was even thought of. I have been using Prism for a few years now, and only now has a recent update come out (and I hope many more to come).
But I should point out- Abode Air and Prism are two different products. - benologist, on 05/12/2009, -6/+16They've really done way too much work for something that is almost entirely covered by right clicking on your desktop and going New > Shortcut.
- ldavid, on 05/12/2009, -0/+9Been using Prism for at least 2 years now. Finally it can minimize down to the systemtray!
- g3r4, on 05/12/2009, -1/+8Seriously, how can right clicking on your desktop mimic this functionality? Short answer: It doesn't. This does more than open a site in a new chromeless window.
- bsonline, on 05/12/2009, -0/+7I also read that it can set a taskbar icon. I'm guessing this could be used to show mail updates in a gmail or facebook shortcut or general information that would already be available via RSS. While I can see usefulness in this (combined with the process management you mentioned)... It isn't going to be all that great until I can install prisms via a directory, or perhaps via links from my favorite sites.
The trick is to make sure superpoke never gets access to anything. Ever.
PS - Usually when I ask a question on here, I get buried into oblivion. Stating a non-flaming opinion doubles the effect. Thank you for a useful reply Carcharo. - geoken, on 05/12/2009, -1/+7I didn't realize that method created a new icon, enabled minimizing to the taskbar and custom notifications.
- g3r4, on 05/12/2009, -0/+6Having read over these comments, I feel rather confused. Did NO ONE read the article? Also, for those people who didn't follow the damn link in the article:
http://prism.mozilla.com/features/
It does more than you think. - simd, on 05/12/2009, -0/+6You're a techie and you think this is an RSS feeder?
- cloud3, on 05/12/2009, -0/+5It would be awesome if every linux distribution allowed users to easily create desktop Web apps. The more users rely on Web applications the easier it is for them to easily switch operating systems.
- sauron256, on 05/12/2009, -3/+8Please don't encourage AstralKnight by digging his stories (look at his history)...
- g3r4, on 05/12/2009, -0/+4Simple answer is that its a web browser. It doesn't feature tabs, as its goal is to treat web apps as actual desktop apps. It does this by taking the place of other applications like Gmail Notifier. (This let's you receive notifications from the tray, minimize windows to the tray, and reassign mailto links to open within prism, and your favorite web mail site.)
- theaceoffire, on 05/12/2009, -0/+4We won't get that until the biggest presence out there (Microsoft) starts really caring about standards.
Since that won't happen soon, might as well move on without them. - FastZ, on 05/12/2009, -0/+4"No more wading through web browser windows and tabs just to read your email or check your Facebook feed."
So they replaced wading through browser windows/tabs with wading through system tray icons? - darkciti2, on 05/12/2009, -0/+4AIR allows websites to access your local files / drives.
Maybe it's just me, but I DON'T want websites accessing my file system, particularly when its only granularity is that of "ALLOW" or "DENY". - jkroge, on 05/12/2009, -3/+7I wish that we would stop extending application functionality to websites viewed in browser. We need better web standards before this should happen. The web languages (i.e. html, css, javascript) are messy and insufficient for developing good applications.
- cloud3, on 05/12/2009, -0/+4Prism and AIR compete in the sense that AIR is competing with the Web itself as a platform, and also in the sense that AIR is losing.
- roxgod666, on 05/12/2009, -1/+4I know, he's one of the biggest trolls on Digg. Surprising.
- Suilenroc, on 05/12/2009, -2/+5Nope.
- inactive, on 05/12/2009, -0/+2Im i the only one that just doesnt understand what this is.. im not retarded or anything.. or am i?
- LeviTheSmith, on 05/12/2009, -0/+2Of course I know what a Prism is you idiot.
I posted the DSOTM cover because it reminded me of it. - hyderalamgir, on 05/12/2009, -0/+2@jkroge - Prism is unlike Chrome's desktop shortcuts because it runs in its own runtime just like AIR. It provides APIs to applications to enable access to features like the system tray.
@ldavid - How could you be using Prism for a 'couple of years' when Mozilla says it was introduce 18 months ago?! - LeviTheSmith, on 05/12/2009, -1/+2http://www.austinchronicle.com/binary/1f6d/Pink_Fl ...
- MacHarborGuy, on 09/10/2009, -0/+1this doesn't make a shortcut.
each instance created by Prism is it's own unique "browser" in a sense. I can log into my Gmail account under one username, create a Prism app for it, log into another, create another, and so on. Each one keeps track of the account they were logged into. This is very useful for me. I have an app for each GMail account, as well as apps for my AdWords and AdSense accounts. - willwill100, on 05/13/2009, -0/+1this is disgusting. it does absolutely nothing, how could they spend over a YEAR developing it!? id rather spend a year painting 5000 doorframes
- ZGambit, on 05/12/2009, -0/+1Tried Using the add on across Flock which is based on Mozilla's Firefox It just did not work on it.
Creating the apps works on the add-on bar but it just doesn't redirect to site once the site is created. Hmm need to fiddle with it more. - ifallen, on 05/12/2009, -0/+1this kinda reminds me of clipping something onto your dashboard on macs, but i like this a little more because you can actually keep these things on your desktop.
i made a stack just for prism's
Oh, and btw it works pretty well, i'm using it to make this post.
One thing i found prism perfect for is pandora,
because i often close my browser not thinking about it and close pandora, so rock on. - Culyt, on 05/12/2009, -1/+1I really wish we didn't depend totally on HTML, webdevs obviously need finer control over the webbrowser. It would be handy if there was some direct ability to draw pixels on the screen. Canvas is going in this direction but its still some ways off, having the ability to draw html in or on top of it for instance.
Also some kind of bytecode (Like LLVM or Java) that runs in a VM and a way to give sites greater control over a system but only with user grating access (and not in a way that people who don't understand are going to accidentally trigger). Then people could program the site in whatever language they wanted.
Obviously there are some issues, like everyone inventing their own website standards making it impossible to search, and people doing stupid things like DRMing websites but people can already do a lot of that using flash or ECMAscript. Also accessibility problems.
But if it becomes an official W3 standard then we can ensure that there are common data structures available for all the content, so while sites can competently change the way their site stores the information, most will use the XML or whatever backend that is more human/search friendly.
Basically I want to see things like Quake Live to not require a plugin. - LonelyTylenoL, on 05/12/2009, -3/+3Or "Create Alias"
- teek, on 05/13/2009, -0/+0I totally agree!
- gamepr0, on 05/12/2009, -1/+1are you trying to say they ripped the graphics?
in that case: FYI the graphics represent light breaking in a prism like in the real world, so no they aren't ripping it they are just about the same subject.
else: why did you post it? - jkroge, on 05/12/2009, -2/+1Just what we need, another non-standard API :/
- bsonline, on 05/12/2009, -3/+1You should write an API for standardizing APIs! I'll write one, too. Then people can use our APIs (we should name them the same thing, like Hinkledinkzilla so people know that it's either mine or yours)! Maybe those people can use our standardizing APIs to write other standardizing APIs? And before you know it, everyone will have their own standard!!! Hell, then everything will be standards compliant of one form or another!!!!
Woah. Deja vu.
/sarcasm.api.com.berry - darkciti2, on 05/12/2009, -3/+1I don't understand it either.
I don't want websites having control of my desktop, or having "desktop like properties".
IE5 on Windows 95 taught us what happens when you blur the line between the browser and the OS.
What are the advantages (to the user, not the advertisers) to using Prism (and/or Adobe AIR)? - Elranzer, on 05/12/2009, -3/+1Well, it creates a shortcut with all of the Mozilla menus/buttons disabled.
Basically, a pop-up window of the site. - teh_techie, on 05/12/2009, -7/+2So, a glorified RSS feeder that puts an icon in your systray? I want LESS in my systray thank you!
