- crownedgriffin, on 05/09/2009, -20/+259All right, I love Opera, and tolerate Firefox, but they both really need to STFU about this.
Yes, the browser automatically updates. New versions of IE are considered critical updates. This isn't new. I did a fresh install of Windows 2000 about a month ago on one of my older machines. IE6 was waiting for me as a critical update.
Everybody here bitches and moans about IE6 being the devil and how everyone should be forced to upgrade, but when people actually get forced to upgrade, Microsoft is just being evil. Make up your minds.
Bundling IE with Windows is not anti-competetive. It's necessary to have a web browser. Why would they put a competing product in place of their own? It would only be anti-competetive if they kept you from installing a competing browser (like on the iPhone...)
....and the upgrade does not automatically set IE as the default browser. I installed IE8 on both my Vista machine at home, and my XP machine at work, and Opera stayed my default on each. - starblazer, on 05/09/2009, -5/+190For once... this is the right way to go. ANY attempt to get rid of IE6 is the RIGHT thing to do.... The people that truly know to install Firefox or Opera in the first place will easily change the default back. This is for all the IE6 people... let them for once.... anything to get rid of IE6.... please, pretty please?
(DISCLOSURE: I am a web dev that needs to support all browsers... and of course my company HAVE to support IE6....) - Bicep, on 05/08/2009, -60/+188This is 2009... An entire Planet(and perhaps beyond) is connected to the Internet. DO NOT ACCEPT anything less than a web browser that is open, interoperable, accessible, extensible, upgradeable, and that is fully compliant and certified to work with Open Web Standards (see w3c.org for more information).
That such a large so-called "technology" company would dishevel a planet-wide effort of advancing Open Web Standards in the first place, is disparagingly scandalous, and an insult to the enabling of humans with computerized technology. It's time to unite against those who are destroying the future of technology for us all. Don't accept it! Send it back!

- abaird, on 05/09/2009, -2/+72Um, while I entirely agree that this is a bit shady, you are aware that neither FF, Opera, or any of the other major browsers are fully W3C compliant, correct?
I'll develop for IE8 over IE6 or 7 any day. The bottom line is the people who actually care enough to use Firefox will still go in and change their default browser back to Firefox. More importantly, the Joe Schmo's who don't give a ***** what browser they are using will now be using a web browser that I don't have to craft a zillion hacks for. - drjekelmrhyde, on 05/09/2009, -14/+79Where is the outrage when Quicktime do it ?
/Even if you uncheck the box for Apple updates it still put that shyt on your machine(check your uninstall programs)
//Don't like IE
///My daughter has firefox 2.xxxx but everytime even when I say I don't want to upgrade ever it still sends that same BS - YuriSakazaki, on 05/09/2009, -15/+76Apple does the same thing when you install iTunes. The difference here is, Microsoft sets it as the default browser on their own software and that's most likely for security reasons.
Sounds like a bunch of people looking for something to cry about. - SPThom, on 05/09/2009, -6/+63I think you miss the point of frustration. I'm sure most of us LOVE the fact that they're forcing an upgrade to IE8, but they should NOT be changing the default browser.
- jcronkhite, on 05/08/2009, -4/+60Whichever browser is the best is irrelevant. What is of major concern is that Microsoft is changing users' default browsers without informing them. For me, this would mean against my will. That is total crap.
- Gareth321, on 05/09/2009, -3/+56I second this. I just upgraded to IE8 as an automatic update and it asked me a few questions to set up the browser but it never made itself default. There was an option "yes or no" that wasn't ticked, asking if I wanted to make IE8 my default. I just ticked no. This is a far cry from what the article says.

(Look at his post history) - gilbes, on 05/09/2009, -4/+51The poster of this article has a shallow, superficial understanding of the topic at hand.
" ... I say they shouldn't be able to force any web browser as the default that's not FULLY CERTIFIED as being W3C.org Open Web Standards Compliant"
The w3c does not certify anything. A W3C.org Open Web Standards Compliant FULLY ***** CERTIFIED web browser does not exist.
All the major browsers implement their own proprietary *****, they have to. None of them fully implement w3c standards (whose highest level reach is titled recommendation), they don't have to.
A lot of "geeks" need to ***** learn the facts about what they think they are talking about. - sab0tage, on 05/09/2009, -5/+52I'm not sure what the problem is they're talking about... Windows update asked me if I wanted to install it, I thought to myself that if any apps use MSHTML which many do, it would be prudent to have the latest (and more secure - hopefully) version. So I installed it.
It didn't remove Firefox as my default browser, it didn't even start up on it's own. I don't see a problem, they didn't force me into downloading it, and it didn't try and trick me like Apple does to get Safari installed. - bjornski, on 05/09/2009, -3/+38"They see me trollin', they hatin'....."
- LonelyTylenoL, on 05/09/2009, -11/+45Why do people hate Communism?
Same reason, people are greedy.
They're both good ideas in theory, but can fail easily do to the corruptibility of a person, among other things. Though the main reason why people actually don't like Communism is due to Right-Wing propaganda. - DocDrea323, on 05/09/2009, -18/+49What did you really expect? Microsoft just to stand aside and not use any dirty tactics? No, they've got a ton of power to lose from IE. If users stop using IE, they have to do more work to make it better (See the growth of Firefox, Safari, Opera and others as examples). As a result, this pulls users away from their operating system in general because they are less dependent.
But as to whether or not Microsoft is in the wrong? They listed the change, plain and clear. I've seen worse from express installs. Most IE users who update will probably be using IE 7 anyways. Worse case scenario, they don't even notice the change, start up Firefox/Safari/Chrome/Opera/whatever and are asked to make that browser the default browser. Wow. Simple problem, simple solution. - LonelyTylenoL, on 05/09/2009, -3/+33A note to those who are old enough to have children and aren't extremely fluent with computers:
UPDATES ARE YOUR FRIENDS - Toshibi, on 05/09/2009, -1/+27I personally don't hate capitalism and if MS wants to do this, more power to them. Of course, I don't use their ***** expensive products because capitalism allows me to choose. I use Firefox, Opera, Dillo, and others. Works well for me.
- ZippyV, on 05/09/2009, -6/+30The default browser does not change when you install IE8.
- BrownieMix, on 05/09/2009, -6/+29Being able to uninstall Internet Explorer would be nice.... it's a pesky little program
- inactive, on 05/08/2009, -6/+26Yup.ignorance..Or fear..I have a friend who is afraid to install Fire Fox..yes,he really is.
I hcve used IE and Fire Fox. Fire Fox is definitely the better browser imho. - Cl1mh4224rd, on 05/09/2009, -4/+23Installing QuickTime on Windows is probably the biggest slap in the face I've ever seen. When installing, it gives you the option to set file associations and mimetype associations... and then promptly ignores you and sets its default associations anyway.
***** you, Apple. - kano163, on 05/09/2009, -2/+20And now you have alot of freedom with Mac, no bullying there
- inactive, on 05/09/2009, -3/+21That's why it's automatic. It assumes the standard or logical choice. In this case we assume since your installing IE, you'd want it to be the default. Nothing nefarious here.
- Claverhouse, on 05/09/2009, -3/+20'Microsoft was not immediately able to explain why Hebenstreit used an edited screenshot.'
They really are that creepy... - FKnight, on 05/09/2009, -2/+19OMG!!! THERE'S a 630K EXECUTABLE IN MY WINDOWS DIRECTORY THAT I DON'T USE!!!! PURE EVIL!!!!!
- HeavyWave, on 05/09/2009, -0/+16Try Adobe Updater, it doesn't even bother to ask how much your traffic costs and goes on downloading 500+ megs of updates. There should be an article about that too.
- Solkre, on 05/09/2009, -4/+20So when I get an automatic upgrade for Firefox from Ubuntu I need to bitch and moan?
I don't think the problem ever was Microsoft. It's the users not giving a ***** about what they use because computers are tools. The tool works enough to get the job done, and people don't look for a newer or better tool to replace it. - B1665r, on 05/09/2009, -8/+23The difference is, Quicktime is full blown ~*****~ malware and iTunes insalls all sorts of other crap on your computer, on top of it being a horrible.... whatever the ***** it is. I was almost a switcher, until I found out that iTunes sucks JUST AS BAD on the mac.
- DarkShroud, on 05/09/2009, -3/+18Not quite, you can disable it but never truly uninstall all of it.
- afizzledbear, on 05/09/2009, -2/+17I don't get these types of cases. When i was looking at my updates it said i could install ie 8 i let my computer install it but and it gave me the option to make it my default which i just said no to. I also get apple trying to get me to install safari when it wants me to update. The other case of microsoft bundling ie with wondows is also dumb i mean what do they expect microsoft to do it's something you expect to come with a browser. I'm pretty sure that macs come installed with safari. Anyone who wants a better web browser than ie can easily just go and download it. What I would consider wrong would be if microsoft prevented windows from running any browser other than ie.
- diggymow, on 05/09/2009, -0/+15Uninstalling it completely would break too many things. Even Steam uses the engine. The way it works in Win7 is the only way it makes sense to, too many things expect that engine to be there.
- markedOne, on 05/09/2009, -0/+14As the text says, it sets itself to default when hitting express install.
Secondly, the guys here and elsewere on the internet ***** on IE6 (maybe 7 too) are not the ones at Mozilla and Opera. It's just logical that they're complaining if Microsoft "forces" at least the less experienced users to use the Internet Explorer instead of Opera or Firefox.
I for one, as a web developer, welcome this method of "forcing" IE6/7 users to use IE8. The ability to use CSS2 without any hacks legits it in my opinion. - luchid, on 05/09/2009, -0/+13@djgreedo: Your statements are so full of utter ignorance that they're not even worthy of this response. Please stop commenting on anything technology-related.
- sirbeta, on 05/09/2009, -7/+20To be honest, I don't understand how it's "shielding" IE from competition for Microsoft to distribute IE with Windows. I understand Opera management might feel it provides an unfair advantage being pre-installed, but how else are you going to get Opera, Firefox, Chrome, etc? Memorize a web address and force Microsoft to install a wget command line tool? Force Microsoft to include every single "top level" browser (something Mozilla doesn't want to do) and make the user explicitly choose before he can install Windows (because making IE selected by default would also cause a commotion) thus adding choices that might just confuse the user?
I do not think that Windows Update should be resetting the default browser choice to IE8 when you choose the Express install option, but every time I hear about IE, I always hear about how unfair it is that IE is bundled with Windows and how the Opera guys are trying to decouple it. - sylv3r, on 05/09/2009, -1/+14At least we'll get IE6 down the drain. ***** IE6!
- ThE0eNiGmA, on 05/09/2009, -0/+12@unreg
Not quite. There were other browsers in the days of IE 5,4, etc. And Microsoft tried their damned hardest to kill them. - Speed, on 05/09/2009, -2/+14BlueBooger, Cuba isn't communist, it's totalitarian. There has never been a genuine example of communism, partly because even the basic theory of communism requires it to adapt from capitalism in a rich nation, not come into play via a revolution in a developing country. Ironically, though, wealthy nations will never adapt communism because there are too many well off people who are happy with their lives and poor nations are most likely to attempt communism since the majority of the populace are poor and desperate.

"I do not feel the greater "good" is serviced by the subjugation of everyone to the notions of collectivism unless it is fully agreed upon by every individual in that unit as a way forward"
Then you do not like democracies, republics or any other form of government/society very much do you? There is no such thing as a government or society in which every member approves of the rules unless they either force the disagreers to leave or to die. At it's core communism is just means insuring a certain minimum standard of living and that the people work for mutual benefit. Whether the government or society becomes fascist/oppressive is not predicated on it being communist, capitalist, socialist, etc. The main factor in any society becoming fascist is prevalent fear, complacency or desperation (which can occur in any society) - Rudegar, on 05/09/2009, -3/+14well people where their kid not living at home installed firefox or opera
would not know how to switch back - LonelyTylenoL, on 05/09/2009, -4/+15What a beautifully made website.
It's hard for me to imagine a true web designer/developer who actually like IE. - Cl1mh4224rd, on 05/09/2009, -0/+11From your summary:
> " I say they shouldn't be able to force any web browser as the default that's not FULLY CERTIFIED as being W3C.org Open Web Standards Compliant."
1) Firefox, Safari, Opera, etc. are also not "fully certified as being W3C.org Open Web Standards Compliant", because...
....a) There is no certification process for web browsers.
....b) W3C's open Web standards is not a certification.
2) Under NO circumstances should ANY browser override the user's default. - bjornski, on 05/09/2009, -5/+15I was just being snarky, but I like your answer. Dugg up.

Use it.
Also, Apple eats all the dicks. - Hermmunster, on 05/09/2009, -6/+16IE in the OS was created to kill Netscape. ActiveX in IE was designed to kill Java. Now, IE in the OS is killing us with malware due to the fact that ActiveX exposes your OS to the web. IE is weak on security because OS is weak on security and the OS is weak on security because IE is weak on security.
Don't use IE you pumpkinheads! - ZenPirate, on 05/09/2009, -4/+14Wait a minute, Mozilla, and Chrome (not an opera user) automatically become the default browser on install unless you uncheck a box. What's the difference?
- Kazbaeden, on 05/09/2009, -3/+12The European Union needs to shut the ***** up. Do you remember the last time they pulled this antitrust crap on Microsoft?
They were all concerned because they thought bundling windows media player reduced consumer choice and competition. This sentiment was backed by realnetworks, makers of real player.
So what does the EU do? They fine MS hundreds of millions of dollars, and force them to put out a version of XP without Windows Media Player. Turns out, no one wants it! A total of zero OEMs ordered it, an infinitesimal amount of customers bought it, and it stayed on store shelves, untouched. Apparantly in all this concern for the consumer, they forgot to ask the consumer what they wanted.
So the net result of all this is the EU ends up with hundreds of millions of dollars, and everyone still hates Real Player.
Seems to me this is just a way for the EU to make money. - ninerskeet, on 05/09/2009, -1/+10"...moderatin', trynna catch me talkin dity"
