- IvanB, on 10/08/2008, -0/+16A Motorola touchscreen running Android? I could consider!
- h0lylag, on 10/08/2008, -2/+16I hope a handset for AT&T gets developed soon.
- Nouman6, on 10/08/2008, -1/+10If they can get a touch screen phone as slim as the razor was, man that would be something.
- abbathdoom, on 10/08/2008, -1/+9I wonder, between Tivos, mobile phones and other embedded Linux devices just how many people are using Linux and don't know it.
Who would have predicted the year of the embedded Linux would come before the year of the desktop. - webkami, on 10/08/2008, -2/+8Now digg's search engine is not the best but look what I found.

Please stop duplicates, we need more space on tubes for LOLCats - mrwells, on 10/08/2008, -1/+6I stopped at the " ... and android expertise ... " phrase.
I can already see the job listing on Monster: "Must have 3 - 5 years experiece with Android." - MacParrot, on 10/08/2008, -1/+6ATT will sell whatever handsets make them money. Have you seen any ads talking about the iPhone from ATT?
- inactive, on 10/08/2008, -3/+8This is a last ditch effort to resurrect Motorola, they seem to have the right idea – I wish them luck.
- moses141, on 10/08/2008, -1/+4I don't know about the others, but I played around with Rev 1 of the SDK and was very unimpressed with the fact that a large number of features that would be vital to developers are not yet implemented. For example, there is no way to access many the phone features to implement things like VOIP -- even Bluetooth is not available in R1.
I'm hoping that Motorola will work with Google to evolve the platform so that it's really ready for prime time. - weeFred, on 10/08/2008, -0/+2I read last week that java experience was needed and android experience was desirable.
- priegog, on 10/08/2008, -1/+3Yeah I read about a week ago in some blog that they were upping their 50 people team to a 350 one, just for android. Pretty big, if you ask me. Good for them. I mean, they lost me as a client already (their Z3 RIZR is a joke), they let themselves go with the flow after the great success that was the RAZR, and as a result we are sitting here, in the Q3 of 2008, with their whole mid-range line being a real joke. And their OS too. While for the past 2 years the world has seen the iphone and everyone is jumping in the bandwagon. (Don't get me wrong, I hate apple, and they didn't innovate in technology a bit with the iPhone IMHO, but they really kickstarted again the smartphone craze). I guess that's what happens when you appoint a CEO who won't use a computer to read his emails.
Motorola has been lazying around, and this thing could be the thing that puts them in the game again. Or else I'm afraid they'll suffer the same destiny as ericsson, being swallowed by a giant Japanese company looking for a recognized brand to enter the market.
The same thing goes for Palm... They have a real opportunity here. But unlike motorola, they seem determined to stick with their plans to release yet-another-mobile-os which has been delayed for many, many years, and about which noone is excited anymore.
The sad thing is, for all these potential things that are yet to come, they had to wait all this time until google (which isn't even in the business) put it together. - Hello1024, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1Lots actually - it's been happening for ~8 years already with cable modems and routers.
The fact it's linux is largely irrelevant - the kernel is just the "guts" of the machine. What matters to most people is the GUI (application layer), and in 99% of cases thats still proprietary. - inactive, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1Routers are a good example as well. Early versions of the Linksys WRT54G ran Linux, and that lives on in the WRT54GL.
- spyda256, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1I would love for them to release Android for my Motorola Q (I know it likely won't happen).
- booststrong, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1It would be great if all phone companies would make it so that open source software were cross compatible not just amount phones of a single brand, but with all phones. I can only imagine running Android on my Motorola and showing someone with an LG some cool software i have, when they fall in love as well, then i can send it to them right then and there using bluetooth.
- RobotBuddha, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1My exact thought as well. It's funny because you know it probably does actually say that.
- Culyt, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1@kanariya: AT&T are a mobile service provider, not a hardware manufacturer, they don't really care or have much say (other than if they want to bundle the handsets or not) in what OS the phone runs.
Them not being a member of OHA doesn't mean the companies they buy handsets from aren't.
☢ - edsonmedina, on 10/09/2008, -0/+1It's called HTC Touch Diamond. I mean, even Iphone should be as thin as the razor.
- LingNoi, on 10/09/2008, -0/+1If they're so dedicated to open then perhaps they could let those of us who have their open source A1200 phones have the keys to run our own software.. yeah.. like that's going to happen.. dedicated to open, what a joke..
- pyrates, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1Easy to predict. It's a lot easier making an embedded environment that has few applications and locked down in functionality for ease of use, then it is to make an easy to use desktop linux. With desktop linux you need a few things:
-easy to install newer drivers
-easy to install applications that don't require they be part of a repository of some sort or that they be compiled from source
-universal install format that is distribution neutral so the author of an application only has to compile it once
-proper api's for graphics and sounds, currently they suck unless you install the binary only drivers for graphics and for sound use oss which is years ahead of alsa - PaulOwen, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1Motorola Exec: "Hey you guys, well aboard - we're a swell team. So we're really looking forward to getting things moto-rolling ..."
Google Android Devs: " ... "
Motorola Exec: "That's a little joke 'in-term' we like to use - hey get used to it."
Google Android Devs: " ... "
Motorola Exec: "So then. Ummm. We're going to work on an exciting product called the MOTODROIDR. You see what we did? We took the word Motorola, and cut a little bit off ANDROID and put an R on the end just like all our other products. We gotta keep the Moto bit, so the AND had to go."
Google Exec: "Let's cut this crap and just talk features ... "
Motorola Exec: "No, let's talk branding opportunities and upgrade paths. We call the shots now ... " - kanariya, on 10/08/2008, -2/+1ATT is not a member of OHA. So no, ATT will not have any Android phones anytime soon.
- olschool82, on 10/08/2008, -3/+1in your dreams.... AT&T is in bed with apple....and apple is not having that
- carloto, on 10/08/2008, -6/+1No!, get the ***** out Motorola!
- dedediddle, on 10/08/2008, -6/+1I wish I could just hire someone to help me with my business....
- gamaliel, on 10/08/2008, -8/+2People still care about Motorola?
