- SirChasm, on 10/30/2008, -0/+19the OS is part of the phone, so making a better OS is inherently making a better phone. Secondly, Moto's phones are engineered well (not a fan of the design), but the UI is terrible. There was another article on Digg a few days ago that talked about how Moto's biggest problem was that their engineers basically told the designers to shut up and sit in the corner.
- Trifold, on 10/30/2008, -1/+17At this point this is kind of like saying "eMachines has decided to focus on Linux as the software platform for their low-cost PCs."
Though in retrospect...wow that actually would've been a good idea. - SergeiGolos, on 10/30/2008, -7/+16Maybe instead of picking what os would work best, they should focus on making better phones?
- m4csrgh3yk3v, on 10/30/2008, -0/+8Accidentally dropped a V3X into the water at the beach.
Happiest day of my life. - inferno10, on 10/30/2008, -0/+7The software experience plays heavily into what makes a better phone. Take a look at the iPhone, which doesn't have the best hardware but does have excellent software.
- Guspaz, on 10/30/2008, -1/+7Well, you've got to admit one thing... Whatever flaws Android might have, it's a heck of a lot better than Motorola's in-house OS.
- aladrin, on 10/30/2008, -1/+7Um... They aren't necessarily going 'all in'. They appear to be experimenting with it. If it works well, they'll put more into it. If not, they trash it and write their own stuff again. Even though the article states they have no choice, rarely is the world so black & white.
- luckyboym, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5should have dumped her off when she was your wife, then she wouldn't have half your stuff.
- SergeiGolos, on 10/30/2008, -1/+6As an iPhone owner i can say the software on the iPhone sucks. My iPhone crashes more then any other phone I have ever had. That includes my last smartphone which ran on windows mobile.
The idea behind the iPhone OS is great and even the lack of keyboard isn't an issue like so many people who don't have one think. But the implementation needs a lot of work, if a phone is playing music, i should still be able to send a text message with out my keyboard freezing up. Or browse the internet with out Safari suddenly closing.
And i agree about the software being key, have been looking for away to put android on my iPhone. - freezerburn666, on 10/30/2008, -2/+5interested to see android on some new hardware...
- IphtashuFitz, on 10/30/2008, -1/+4Too little, too late?
Personally I've found most Motorola phones to be lagging significantly behind the times, not just in terms of the software but in the hardware design as well. After the initial success of the RAZR it seems they decided to forgo most other designs and focus specifically on that one. I liked my RAZR initially but I'm so over the flat metallic keyboard, the poor battery life, etc. If they want to succeed they need to not only support Android fully but they need to come out with a whole new generation of phones that aren't based on their past models. - bntphoretwunny, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3agreed. i've had nothing but trouble with motorolla phones, but if android can make them not suck, i may go back.
- snotrokit, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3like they have a choice? At this time they are on the verge of losing it all. So, it almost has to be all or nothing, and the all really isn't that much.
- snotrokit, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2I edited my post as you covered it. after the RAZR, they did nothing but put the same base into different shells. Then nothing.
- Woknblues, on 10/31/2008, -0/+2Not sure why everyone is ripping on Motorola... Has anyone had one beyond the razors? I had nearly 10 years of Motorola, and they never failed me. Of course, we are talking old tech already, but I used Motorolas from 1997-2006 daily with my work. The only reason why we got new models periodically was due to the leasing arrangement. They take hard abuse, were clearer on calls than other brands that I tried, had very good battery life, had the two way radio function, saving people thousands of dollars and hours texting. The flip Motorola phones were gold.
I would love to see what Motorola does with android. - Jektal, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2Kinda cool page and I dugg it, but buried this spamming of it here. You didn't even describe what you were linking too
- knowmonger, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2Which one buddy ?
I can tell you the amount of damage you'll get through this. If you're in Apple, then you're pretty safe ;) - helenkupo, on 10/30/2008, -1/+3ahh If only motorola made good phones.
- venomoushealer, on 10/30/2008, -1/+2Motorola phones are good for Verizon to give away for free with the New Every Two. And that is all Motorolas are good for.
- matt.rubin, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1verizon carrys moto. Should I get excited?
- ThantiK, on 10/30/2008, -1/+2I'd love to see something as miraculous as Motorola picking up the Pandora (www.openpandora.org), add some cell-phone features to it, and release it as a mass-market device utilizing android and some emulation software or perhaps foregoing the android market altogether and just allowing linux to run on it.
THAT would/could save Motorola's ass I think. As it is I expect the pandora is only limited by the oomph a larger company could put behind it. - sremick, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1I used to love Motorola phones. Now everything is some bastard child of the RAZR. I have the V635... perhaps their last GOOD phone, and it came out years ago. And it wasn't even officially available in the USA. It's still my main phone, though, as I can't find a suitable replacement.
Great design, great keyboard (REAL buttons!), metal case... very stylish. But the OS is showing its age big-time, and I'm done with external antennas. - SirChasm, on 10/30/2008, -3/+4I echo the statement made in the article that while it's a good move for Motorola (as their OS blows infinite amount of ass), it may be too late to change Motorola's bleak future.
- incidentflux, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Now that Nokia S60 Symbian has gone open source things will only get better.
Open source Symbian Vs Open Source Android = Fight! - Sylenus, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1I don't plan on ever owning a motorolla phone again, but thank god for this; their UI was the worst I've ever used. I would say first moto then, then nokia, LG, samsung nd finally apple from worst to best of the top manufacturers.
- Sylenus, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1If it works well? as compared to what; I can't imagine anything not working better than their current UI.
- knowmonger, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Symbian sucks, for your info. I've been using it for 2 years and been developing for 1 year. Its not fresh enough for modern phones. I'm jumping to either Android or Mac (iPhone) as a developer.
- pondlife, on 11/01/2008, -0/+1Motorola really need to do something to compete with Nokia et al and I think that focussing on a simple, clean OS is a very good idea - it means they can cut a lot of costs and focus on the hardware. Good luck to 'em I say.
- alainedouard, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1I was seeing this coming.
The iPhone platform is incredible, and Android could be a serious competitor.
I personally hate Android's platform because your can't port applications that were already written; you have to start from scratch if you would like to make an application for Android. - knowmonger, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Great. Cuz HTC sucks in so many aspects. I wish Android came in Sony Ericsson phones. They're awesome. Nokia is great too but they wouldn't opt for anything else than sh*t s60.
- ePuck, on 10/30/2008, -1/+1Motorola has been saying for a while now that they want to create an android phone that had the same impact as the razor. It IS black and white either you join Android or be crushed!
- chandrab, on 10/30/2008, -1/+1Motorola is such a f*ckedcompany. They are banking on a "social network phone" to save them. WTF is that? First off, Social network is an application on a smartphone (e.g. iPhone) and doesnt need a dedicated phone. What Fortune 500 executive is going to clamor of for a social network phone? None of them. The Digg and under-20's demographic buy sexy Apple products and not Motorola.
http://www.f-ckedcompany.com - RegalGSX, on 10/30/2008, -3/+3Anything is better than the ***** phones Motorola already has. They are getting bukkake'd on by Nokia, Samsung, HTC, and practically everyone else. Hopefully they open their eyes and try to clean out the collective semen stream coming down their face.
- incidentflux, on 10/30/2008, -0/+0Since you're a developer, I'm curious to know what do you think of the upcoming touch enabled Nokia 5800 XpressMusic with Symbian S60 5th edition? The touch phone for the masses, as they say.
http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/5800_XpressMusi ... - Scott2, on 10/30/2008, -3/+2Shame - I always thought Motorola had some of the more operable software on their phones (with exception to WinMo)
- ePuck, on 10/30/2008, -2/+1Motorola has been saying for a while now that they want to create an android phone that had the same impact as the razor. It IS black and white either you join Android or be crushed!

- Slade605, on 10/30/2008, -6/+1I accidentally dumped my exwife off the end of a pier.
Happiest day of my life. - RumpleForeskin3, on 10/30/2008, -13/+3Start preparing your resume now, open source will soon take over.
- dejanigma, on 10/29/2008, -14/+3I work for a competing company... EEK!
