- orbish, on 05/26/2009, -0/+15I have beta v2 installed on an MSI Wind U100.
The good: Post-Grub boot takes about 5-7 seconds. It boots faster than most machines wake from hibernate. This should help with battery life. The interface is stunning and very fluid.
The bad: It's an alpha build. Some of the issues I have is I cannot sign into aim, install flash or get facebook to work with the web2.0 tools woven into the interface. Moblin doesn't have an online forum to track issues/fixes either. It has a long way to go and needs either a wiki or a forum for support.
I would also like to right-click again. - barryp3403, on 05/25/2009, -1/+14Really interesting concept. Thanks for spelling it out about Moblin.
- ripter, on 05/26/2009, -0/+12Avoid the blog: http://moblin.org/community/blogs/imad/2009/moblin ...
- Stingwolf, on 05/26/2009, -0/+8"All other..."? I have no problem with pidgin for AIM, Flash works fine, and facebook in Mozilla works exactly the same as it does in Windows on my Linux laptop.
- NoodlePants, on 05/26/2009, -1/+6Running Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my Dell Mini 9 and love it. And it is not an "alpha".
- JQP123, on 05/26/2009, -2/+7"For Linux power users, and I'm one of them, who want to control every last thing on my PC, this isn't that attractive a notion."
Good! Then it may actually have some potential in the open market.
To average user, toying with the operating system and the hardware isn't that attractive a notion. They're much more interested in what lies beyond this --- "zones" of functionality in Intel's terminology. It's more about the goal or the destination, not the machine that gets you there. - Hermmunster, on 05/26/2009, -0/+5Disagree, desktop linux is as easy as Windows, or even OS X, once it is set up. In many ways due to the open nature and advanced state of the desktop managers, it makes Linux Desktops more useful and easier to use.
Your argument is that "you had issues at some point with some feature of Linux" so now everything under linux is difficult. This is a strawman argument and can easily be picked apart. You also, most likely haven't used Linux in an age (computing age) and you have no idea what Linux is about so you continue to propagate what you believe you know.
Let's get real here, doing something under any OS if you don't know what you are doing is hard. Every grandma will tell you that. Just getting into a new car that may be a standard vs. a automatic is hard for some people. Every change to every program is difficult because people tend to remember where features are and thus expect to see them there. Migrating from one OS to another is no different. You have to learn--there's a learning curve. Once that curve is overcome it is easy. So, they teach Windows in kindergarten--if they taught Linux there your argument could easily be switched around.
There are nagging features in Windows. There are confusing features in the desktop manager of Windows. There are intrusive features in Windows. But, you can say that about every OS and the level of acceptability is based on your comfort with what you already know.
So, please, stop spreading this ***** that Linux desktops are harder. Your wrong and if you had some integrity you'd have taken the time to learn that for yourself. - kurlez, on 05/26/2009, -2/+6Yes. it's quite interesting. "Desktop" is always painful for Linux and Moblin introduces the new way to make a breakthrough in desktop area.
- burrgrinder, on 05/26/2009, -0/+4Review of a desktop UI concept that doesn't include screenshots or at least? Seems kinda out of touch.
- WoollyMittens, on 05/26/2009, -0/+4While it runs wonderfully on my Eee PC, I'll miss APT-GET. I'll use Ubuntu Netbook Remix instead.
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3Seems like more dumbed-down nonsense. The people are not stupid enough that they don't know how to use computers. Both Windows, Mac and Ubuntu are perfectly easy enough.
- Hermmunster, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3He's either of juvenile mentality, or he's paid to ***** on those things he doesn't like, or he's just a ***** in life, or he's paid by Microsoft, or he's incapable of learning anything, or he's a self professed profet, or he's a short sighted moron. Or he's all of the above.
The most obvious answer to his diatribe is that Linux takes a much farther sighted approach to advancement; and what isn't used today or tomorrow will, can, and usually does get used in the future. - mrBitch, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3Moblin looks very promising.
FTA :
" ... Moblin faster than fast. I've never seen any operating system, except for instant-on, embedded desktop Linuxes like SplashTop, boot so quickly.
... the desktop felt incredibly fast. If I didn't know I was running it on 1.6GHz Atom equipped netbook with 512MBs to 1 GB of RAM, I never would have guessed I was running it on such low-end hardware.
Moblin is the anti-Vista. It runs great on minimal equipment instead of requiring the fastest possible hardware and still running at a snail's pace. " - roazena, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3I installed this today. I like the interface much better than Ubuntu Netbook Remix. The 8 second startup is awesome. The choice of using the power button for shutdown is questionable but works, and works fast.
Downside: wireless is crap, plain and simple. Dell's own wifi chips are hardly obscure and should be detected and supported. The term "Zones" makes no sense. "Internet" is not a synonym for web browser. The movies on the home page link to YouTube -- but Flash isn't installed. Dump YUM and put in Synaptic. Fonts setting doesn't actually change much (although the rendering is kept)
It isn't just that it's an alpha, but that some of the name/icon/design choices are particularly weak. A "get to know Moblin" app on the home page would be welcome. - CynicalTyler, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3Seriously. "Cyber Cynic" Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols needs to learn how to include screenshots in his blogerator.
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2Its a great concept, but needs a lot of work. its more of a alpha then a beta. The browser is still very very buggy and has no right click support or copy paste functionality. Integration with Facebook would be a good addition and support from MSN and yahoo is a must for the im client. allowing replacement for the twitter or last.fm pane with gmail will be extremely good for me.
- illDecree, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2....sadly
and this is a gov't network
:-( - n3rrd, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2I'm using the Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my ASUS Eee 1000HE and I found it sluggish compared to XP, and the out-of-the-box wireless utility was slow and continually needed to have the WPA key resupplied even when it was told to remember it. I admit, I maybe doing something wrong.
While I like the left-hand side of the Netbook Remix UI, the right-hand side, which just launches the file browser, was lacking to me. It didn't have the same amount of polish, or the same feel, as the program launcher. I thought it would be neat to have the Pictures, Movies, etc. sections provide thumbnail that are equal in size to the program icons in the center of the screen.
Slap Moblin's method of handling documents, pictures, etc. into the Remix, and help me figure out the issues I'm having with the wireless utility and it would be perfect. - rumblestrut, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2I swear that worked this morning.
New link: http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/mysterymeatnavigat ... - inactive, on 05/26/2009, -2/+4Speaking of Novell - anyone still running a Netware network out there?
Just curious. - argylesocks, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2"Seems like more dumbed-down nonsense"
Those OS's are fairly easy but people who want to focus on social networking and internet don't need all that extra stuff and 5 clicks to get to the menu you want. This is really in my eyes intended to be a new kind of device for communications and quick access to simple programs. You don't need a full-featured desktop on your cell phone, it would just slow you down and get in the way and MANY people don't necessarily need a full-featured desktop on a netbook. Personally I see this as a very efficient, inexpensive, OS for communication and basic computer apps. That is very attractive to me. If I need more I will use Ubuntu or Remix but I doubt I need that on a tiny computer I toss around with me. - mrBitch, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1Even better, Novell has released an installable CD and USB images of a special OpenSUSE build that includes the Moblin UI :
http://bit.ly/MoblinOpenSUSE - mrBitch, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1Damn, wrong link, try this one :
http://bit.ly/moblinOnOpenSUSE - nesagwa, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1They named it after a zelda enemy?
- Jambi, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1http://arstechnica.com/open-source/reviews/2009/05 ...
Here's a better review, with plenty of screenshots. - n3rrd, on 05/26/2009, -1/+2Nice. Criticize broken navigation and supply a broken link to support yourself. :)
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1I love ubuntu but netbook remix is useless on some apps that are not meant to run in fullscreen mode. Moblin respects that and doesnt force full screen mode on those apps.
- Hermmunster, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1IIRC, though it was some time ago, I used Fedora and there was a version of synaptic and a series of repositories. Though that may have changed I doubt it. Even so, I think the limit is on the netbooks and not on the OS here, even though the OS attempts to maximize the netbook, given a few failures here and there.
- dontreplytome, on 05/28/2009, -0/+0@Hermmunster:
Or, I've been using Linux for almost as long as you've been alive, and found it SEVERELY lacking on the desktop.
Take a read, *****: http://linuxhaters.blogspot.com - rumblestrut, on 05/26/2009, -3/+3I tried it and found it quite lacking.
Although the Mac OS X dock and Window launchbar has been critized for having Mystery Meat Navigation before (http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/mysterymeatnavigat ... Moblin takes this concept to a new level. Half of their UI icons don't make sense.
Great concept, but the UI needs tweeked a bunch. - inactive, on 05/26/2009, -1/+1Quick! Shoot sword lasers at it!
- dontreplytome, on 05/26/2009, -19/+0//I cannot sign into aim, install flash or get facebook to work //
And thus, this, like all other Linux-based desktop OS's, will die with a whimper.
