- rebopper, on 10/11/2007, -5/+25If MS were smart they would have a MS Linux distro. Fire with fire.
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -11/+28Not sure about 'militant', but having just watched http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3M07i_Ejys , there's no surprise here. Microsoft must be sh**ing its pants at the moment, seeing every loyal Windows users running to save haven which is Free software.
- syafthegeek, on 10/11/2007, -11/+27Vista is overrated and they just don't know how to deal with Linux threats. So what they did? Sue Open Source. Is that the best way that they could think of?
- shableep, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11i see that comment about using a Linux based distribution of Windows and it makes complete sense, logically. tho, unfortunately for Microsoft, that means they'd actually have competition. healthy for the market, good for consumers, but not good for Microsoft's dominance. and that's what Microsoft is deathly afraid of.
and, honestly, i don't see why Microsoft keeps insisting on trying to make it's own crap from scratch. they were never really that good at it. they've kinda hit a wall in their innovating capacity. hell, they didn't even create the thing that got them in the door; ms-dos. - sigmaman2, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11I've heard Stalin described in a similar way... Stalin was so successful in using power, fear, and violence that he used them against every obstacle, whether there could have been a better way or not.
Similarly, Microsoft seems to be using FUD and litigation against an enemy that is immune to it. But it worked so well for them in the past that they seem to have a hard time competing using anything else. - idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5@schestowitz
That guy's haircut is awesome.
He must have a lot of courage. - dude187, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5"They must be scared that their entire base of software is going to be revealed as patented by other companies."
I usually don't reply to trolls, but I couldn't help but comment on that line right there. I keep seeing 7of7 and other trolls spout similar rhetoric to this all the time and rather than get annoyed at it like 7of7 would just love, I find it a perfect example of why software patents are so invalid. If two entire operating systems can be written entirely independent of each other and yet still infringe on patents the other holds, then how are ANY software patents valid at all? Thats the very definition of obviousness when the same problem is tackled by multiple people, and the same exact answer is reached.
Also show me one other example of something covered by both copyright and patents. - atdigg, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10I'm sorry but I haven't seen Mac OS doing what Beryl does.
EDIT: What's up 7of7, trolling Linux threads again? - baalzebub, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6there are some things even an 800 pound gorilla can not defeat, like hundreds of smaller apes...
- bluetrevian, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9Microsoft needs to wake-up and smell the culture... They aren't gonna change/force the millions of users realizing the potential of Linux to pay for something they don't have to.
Simply put... make a better product and the customers will come back, but they seem to think that alienating people, then litigating against them is the best course...
Bravo Microsoft

- sexycommando, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I always thought the next Windows (Fiji?) would be based on BSD instead of linux. Sort of like what Apple did with Mac OS X.
- daradib, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I don't agree, but I think this is what he is talking about:
"LinuxInsider is in fact an anti-Linux, anit-OpenSource publication. They will alwasy provide amplification for the FUD of the day. I will not be reading anymore LinuxInsider articales, nor clicking on anymore links within LinuxToday that refer to LinuxInsider. Everybody who cares about Linux should do the same. And shoebody should investigate whose pocket LinuxInsider is in."
http://www.linuxtoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn=2004-05-06-014-26-OS-BZ-0007
But,
"If I had any doubts left that LinuxInsider's supposed transformation a while back from a FUD site to a legitimate Linux news site was all for show, they are laid to rest by their publishing of an Enderle article."
http://www.linuxtoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn=2004-08-18-021-26-OP-0015 - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6FUD ???, Do you have any life except trolling on each and every anti Microsoft post in the world ?
It was beryl animation plug-in and that animation effect was removed from the official version long ago. And about your MS patent claim just fuxxing reveal the patents and Linux will replace that part of code, whats problem with you and Microsoft, got any short term memory loss ? - DickBreath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2What I want to know is how did an article like this appear on LinuxInsider.com?
LinuxInsider is an ANTI-Linux site, pretending to be a Linux news site.
It would be like if I started a publication and called it, say, Windows Insider, and craftily slanted everything as anti-Microsoft/Windows as possible. - sigmaman2, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Microsoft is the proverbial 800-pound gorilla.
Q: What do you give to an 800-pound gorilla?
Anything it wants? or maybe A tranquilizer dart? - Excessive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4The problem with Microsoft is, they are doing everything for their stock holders, not users. This way, everything will suck more over and over.
- Risasi, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6Software Terrorists...
- Bicep, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Awesome article. Makes this mean so much: http://digg.com/videos/people/Is_this_guy_NUTS_Or_is_he_a_fortune_teller_Hilarious_either_way
- daradib, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Agreed. Although most of these ideas are great, they will never happen. These ideas are good for the world, not including Microsoft and its shareholders.
Whether or not you like Linux, a good quote from Mahatma Gandhi:
“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”
Some may dispute the winning part, but Microsoft has certainly reached the fighting stage.
http://www.redhat.com/about/culture/
http://www.redhat.com/truthhappens/ - slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Linux makes complete sense to me.
- shableep, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3dude, i'm not just saying that they pick up Linux and slap on a Windows logo. they could pretty much remake Windows, adding in tons of their own technologies, using a more open and accessible platform. and i want that competition for Windows. look what happened to Internet Explorer when they started getting nudged by firefox.
and "you guys"? i'm not some guy with fanatic blind faith for Linux. I'm just some guy that uses Windows that realized that Microsoft has kinda hit it's limits for what it's good at. and that sucks for me because my next popularly accepted operating system could really suck. - generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It's also posted here, if you want to talkback to the author: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Gardner/?p=2463 "Microsoft: A law firm pretending to be an army pretending to be a software company"
- cantormath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Question!>?
I have a real question, I am not trying to be a smart ass here. Could Microsoft be sued for slander of ANY kind for making these claims about Open Source products without supporting evidence? I would think that these claims are hurting OSS, at least temporarily, or is an attempt to cause harm by creating fear in the public about OSS. Again, I do not know, however, I would think that they would either have to say which patents are being infringed upon or take a law suite, potential a class action suite, from the entire OSS community. - Darcy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Windows is the most successful software product in history, and showing no signs of losing its dominance. Windows server continues to grab market-share, and generate huge profit for Microsoft.
So why on earth do you think they should scrap it? And what exactly “don’t they get”? - rebopper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You mean Unix?
- Excessive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Simply put.. Microsoft is running out of drinking water. No water, no Microsoft.
[sigh.. missed Fallout very much] - baalzebub, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2if microsoft was clever they would do like Apple did and take FreeBSD and build on top of that, FreeBSD made a great base for OSX...
- baalzebub, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1rebopper, i doubt microsoft will use Linux as a base to build their OS/distro on because the GPL would require the source code of the whole OS be opened & GPLed, what would be more plausible would be for microsoft to take FreeBSD and build a OS/System on top of that as the BSD license would be lenient towards microsoft keeping the source code closed thereby allowing microsoft to keep to their closed source philosophy towards software...
- AgntOrnge, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5Who would fill in that desktop market then? I can't say I've seen anything that just crushes Windows in reliability and compatibility hands-down. Everything anymore, even MS, is just a me-too product.
- jm9206755, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@rasterbator
I think the FTC would be rather upset with anyone involved with manipulating the market as you have suggested. - macko, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They're not suing. Just to be clear.
- rebopper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@baalzebub,
I meant an OS/distro as another flavor of Windows. All the other normal releases would still be there, just add an Linux flavored OS to the arsenal. Think about it. A lot of people just want to play around with Linux and this would be an OS that could be given away like AOL disks, (you could even do it knoppix style on business card size CD's, people wouldn't know the differece). The ***** would spread like wild fire, (even if only used as drink coasters on the coffee table) but at least it's the company logo and software in more peoples hands. Good publicity stunt if you ask me. They have enough people and money that it could be built rather quickly. Just using Linux as an example really. - srg13, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"if microsoft was clever they would do like Apple did and take FreeBSD and build on top of that, FreeBSD made a great base for OSX..."
Funny, I'm sure that everyone would have been really happy if they copied Apple in that move. But they chose to copy the eye-candy instead... - daradib, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I have to say that Windows is a lot better on desktops than servers.
Windows has far better market share on desktops than server. If they were to "scrap" anything, servers would be first. - rasterbator, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2The reason MS is sh**ting their pants is because they know they are about to become another Nintendo: just a game console company. Everything else they do is under fire, and their only recourse is to sue. What a bunch of clowns...
- Excessive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3@7of7
I suppose VistaBaby left you as a guardian while he is busy with trolling other sites. - TheNameless88, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Are you a Linux fan? If so, please leave the club.
Everyone isn't "switching to Linux/Mac OS." No matter how much you want to fantasize about it. It will take a good amount more time if Linux is going to dominate the market, or even Mac OS. Dell might help a little bit, but people are still under the impression that Linux is impossible to use. If you can double-click, you can use most Linux distributions. - Fduch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!
IT'S DEAD I'M TELLING YOU THE TREUTH!!!!!!!! IT'S NOT MOVING AND TALKING!! IT'S JUST YOUR HALLUCINATIONS!
Why or why don't you see the world my way even though I CRY FOR MANY YEARS??? - rasterbator, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3I would like to see an effort to hit M$ where it really hurts: in the pocketbook.
We need a DUMP M$FT DAY.
A web site should be started to spread the word on the internet to dump MSFT stock. The date could be set on the web site and all MSFT stockholders could set their M$ stock to sell immediately at the same time. Whether it is set automatically online, or people call their brokers and tell them to dump MSFT at the specific time, MSFT stock would be crippled, and their wealth dramatically reduced. Once the stock begins to drop, those who didn't know about the DUMP MSFT DAY would see their stock dropping quickly, and sell as well.
The investments could be set to reinvest in something else — Cisco, Apple, Pharmaceuticals, etc. — so that the stock market is not affected overall.
Anyone want to start the domain ball rolling? dumpmsftday.com and dumpmsftstock.com are both available right now... - HairyPoter, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3I'm saying this all these last years and I will repeat it again.
M$ IS DEAD and is desperate to sell, as they are in free fall spinning to the ground since 2003.
M$ is failing in every product lauched by the simple reason they are dead.
People are giving ***** to what they launch. Industry are giving *****. Companies are giving *****.
Apple and Steve Jobs are the head of industry. Almost all companies are copying Apple.
Everybody is buying a Mac or changing to Linux. Hasta la Vista is getting dust (The name is perfect!)
As they have large amounts of money, they will probably don't break cause money will give them inertia.
I suggest you this article
MICROSOFT IS DEAD
http://www.paulgraham.com/microsoft.html - ThePict, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2@pathy:
I hold the belief that Microsoft is a money-grubbing, market-share-grabbing convicted monopolist, and their hamperings are that they have competition from other companies that are actually trying to provide value for dollar, oh, and those hippy lunix weirdos. I'd be interested to see what they'd come up with if anyone on their board of directors actually had a soul, or at least a conscience, and they actually cared about their customers' experience after the sale. - strangewill, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2@rebopper
***** Genius idea. - KevinC442, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Doesn't Mr. Gates have enough money already? "Damn, I'm only going to make $20 billion this year, how can I afford that cyborg operation now?!"
Perhaps if he would spend more time fixing all the problems with the actual operating system, and less time making it look nice and creating hundreds of equally flawed programs (so he can make even MORE money), he wouldn't be having this problem. - Darcy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3 "i see that comment about using a Linux based distribution of Windows and it makes complete sense, logically. tho, unfortunately for Microsoft, that means they'd actually have competition. healthy for the market, good for consumers, but not good for Microsoft's dominance. and that's what Microsoft is deathly afraid of."
WTF, you guys live in a dream world. How would turning Windows into yet another Linux distro be good for anyone? I think what you are really saying is, you want them to make Windows suck just has much as Linux does so that Linux can finally compete. - pathy, on 10/11/2007, -10/+7I'd actually be interested in that.
I hold the belief that Microsoft is an extremely talented company, and their hamperings are that they pretty much need to ensure as much of Windows works with as much of everything else as possible, which makes sense when you consider what Windows is. I'd be interested to see what they'd come up with if they started off from a pretty much blank slate, and didn't give a damn about anything. - venuspcs, on 10/11/2007, -8/+4Microsoft should completely bow out of the Desktop OS and Workstation OS markets. They have never gotten it and never will. Windows 2003 Server is a rock solid behemoth (not a compliment) but is the best operating system they have ever released (not saying much here). At most the only future operating systems Microsoft should release would be Server OS'. They need to get out completely of Desktop/Workstation/Mobile/PDA/Embedded/CATV/SAT Operating System markets. They are far better at hardware and productivity software than anything else. If they were to ditch OS' and then split the remaining resources into two companies (One for Hardware/Gaming and one for Productivity Software) they would be much more successful than they are now.
- 7of7, on 10/11/2007, -28/+12The FOSS movement has been on a real FUD tear lately. They must be scared that their entire base of software is going to be revealed as patented by other companies. One look at even simple things like Beryl and you can see that the FOSS movement isn't interested in innovating and is instead stealing ideas from companies like Apple. Now instead of producing real software they instead lob unsubstantiated allegations at Microsoft. It's pathetic that they are so insecure and unsure of their own abilities that they have to attack the competition instead of producing legitimate software.
