- AlexFerny, on 10/11/2007, -9/+48Just what we need, more MS in Linux :(
- Toshibi, on 10/11/2007, -4/+41Whatever floats your boat...
Actually, that's why I like Linux....there's a distribution for everyone. - ptFoe, on 10/11/2007, -4/+37You got to love MS pimping out these cheap crack whores from the Open Source trailer park convention.
- baalzebub, on 10/11/2007, -7/+36thats ok, it is Linux that will have the last laugh...
- BlackCow, on 10/11/2007, -2/+26Wouldn't it be crazy is MS based their next OS on unix?
hahahahahahaha.... oh man thats a good one - davidrools, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26If Microsoft is feeling threatened by Linux, maybe there's something to it that you ought to check out for yourself. You MS sheep make me laugh.
- clickwir, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22Xandros just dropped another peg on their already low position.
- BlackCow, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20We will remember you when Linux takes over the world.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19I don't understand what the point of this is? Does anyone really use Xandros?
- Tweakedenigma, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Has anyone considered that this might be an attempt by MS to get Patent protection from the members of the FSF? You know the ones like IBM and Sun?
I don't know much about patents but if GLP3 does extend those both ways wouldn't that be the case? - benanzo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Xandros has never given back any code from what they've taken. At least Novell sponsored some sorely-needed projects in GNOME. Xandros just takes the best of what we can give them then "value-adds" their own proprietary apps like the Xandros File Manager and Xandros Networks etc. to try and differentiate from the hord. That's *****. It's about time they do something (publicly) stupid and draw out the hatred they deserve. I can't wait until they fall below Linspire on Distrowatch.
Even if every commercially-sponsored GNU/Linux gets bought/crippled by MS, there will still be the big 3: Debian, Gentoo and Slackware. No one can kill them, not even MS. Oh, and gNewSense (but does anyone actually use that besides RMS?)
It is comforting to know that I will always have a Free software /home if I want it. - pcghost, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18As long as we don't see Debian signing this nonsense, who cares. Does Xandros really have that much of the Linux market share? I think not. One more group/distro that obviously doesn't get it going the way of the dodo. No offense to the couple hundred Xandros fans out there, but when it comes to newbies, Ubuntu ftw.
- cantormath, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15MS IS SCARED OF LINUX.......MS is scared linux is gonna become a serious competitor on the desktop market. Especially after the DELL/Ubuntu release of new Laptops/desktops available to the public with fully supported hardware......and they should be scared.
- raldz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14be scared... be very scared...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13true. as things develop, Debian's fanatical, no-compromise stand on "free-only" software is proving more and more valid.
the multinational corporate monopolists have concluded that they've already lost on merit or innovation, and have switched to a campaign to destroy free software by appealing to greed, by simply buying off developers -- it will take a strong resolve to resist the temptation, but if any can, it's Debian. - xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13we don't have a problem with big companies, like Sun, or IBM the problem is MS, its hard to trust someone who continually spreads FUD and then starts making deals. Seriously would you let a convicted pedophile take care of your children?? Well its the same with linux and MS.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15When MS copies some else ideas like Apple, its about adapting industry standard.
When others uses basic elements of computation, its patent violation.
Welcome to WOW. - l34NDl20, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16Please M$ stay away from the open source community because we really don't need your help with anything.
- davidrools, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12I used their desktop linux distro and it was actually really good looking and detected all my hardware correctly the first time--even my ATi video chip. But I'm using Ubuntu now.
- generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Bryan, Samba 4, the FSF projects (incl the very important GCC which the kernel depends on to compile), etc will be under GPLv3. GNU/Linux does not just include a kernel. The only companies who want to fork to GPLv2-only would be Xandros, since Novell can use GPLv3 software through the grandfather clause and Red Hat surely don't want Microsoft to keep making royalties off their code without abiding by the GPL. In the end, those ancient distros would die out, as GPLv2 code they use will be ported to GPLv3 code ("any later version").
- xst4t1kx, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13Goodbye Xandros. Perhaps MS's strategy is to sink Linux distro's by collaborating with them.
- TheNameless88, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13Only about 203 more distributions to go.
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -13/+21Don't worry. GPLv3 renders this obsolete, much to Microsoft's misfortune. Still, they try to get ammunition for the courts (FSF) and they try to divide and destroy. Miserable acts that will never work...
- archer75, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13Ok, why? If you are going to say that xandros or fedora are better then you should also say why.
- init100, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8They probably didn't use your words, but AFAIK, Red Hat already told Microsoft to take a hike when Microsoft approached them about a patent agreement.
- nullx42, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12ahh *****
- generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9BTW, that IW Linus interview is before Draft 3 was released (march 11 vs march 29 release date of draft 3). He later said he's satisfied with the later drafts.
- patchshorts, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10This is really pissing me off. I've been using Linux as a solid desktop platform for about 5 years. Within that time I've had to ween myself off of "Windows Programs" that I was used to using. This was tons of work but I was pushed by all the mystery behind Microsoft's application design. From the way some of the core applications in Windows Server 2003 work, to their registry design and hierarchy, even their mismatched flags and inconsistent commands, I cannot stand, nor understand Microsoft Software. These partner ships make me nervous. I really don't care what happens as long as GNU/Linux remains free (beer, freedom), and Microsoft doesn't develop a line of the code in GNU/Linux.
- TinnedTuna, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5If I had my own distro of Linux, and M$ approached me with their protection-racket-scheme I'd tell them to cram it up their arse. I want to see some distros with the spine to do this. I hope that Ubuntu does!
- TheNameless88, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11@digitallysick
It affects all 5 users of Xandros. Don't degrade their feelings!
-end sardonic comment- - TheNameless88, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10Xandros obviously doesn't have much faith in their security- it comes with an antivirus. Unless this is for samba reasons, in which case, what the hell are you doing on Xandros.
http://www.fsf.org/news/gpl3dd4-released
"Distributors who make discriminatory patent deals after March 28 may not convey software under GPLv3. Novell is not prohibited from distributing this software because the patent protection they arranged with Microsoft last November can be turned against Microsoft to the community's benefit."
Apparently Novell hasn't thrown in their hat, yet. They're still doing good for the free community; however, there's no way in hell I'm going back to OpenSUSE, I just got all my boxes on Fedora, and actually have had a much better experience since. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7@blackcow
They don't feel shame at all to do that.
They are making deals with linux distros, while running their ill fated get the facts campaign. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Big Companies ?,
We don't need MS support. Where MS has been all these years ?, When thousands of individual users&other companies contributed to Linux to make it a success, just some "Big Company" walks in and takes advantage of Linux ?,
Their get the facts campaign shows their dedication to Linux. And we don't need support of axxholes like you and MS. - init100, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"Just to make their costumer think that Linux may become a *legal ability*."
I think you mean a *legal liability*. - init100, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@TheNameless88
"I just got all my boxes on Fedora, and actually have had a much better experience since."
Especially if you are using Fedora 7, I'm not surprised. I just tried the live version on my laptop, and both the wireless network and 3D support (including desktop effects, a.k.a. Compiz) worked out of the box. I was actually quite surprised that Compiz worked out of the box, as the laptop uses an ATI card, and the proprietary ATI driver does not work with Compiz and AIGLX. It apparently used the open source "radeon" driver, which seem to have 3D support built in even for moderately new boards (Radeon Mobility X600). - AlexFerny, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Microsoft is doing Linux a favour, by teaming up with some of the fringe distributions (and effectively killing them due to community perception) they are simply driving users to the more mainstream flavours (Debian/Ubuntu, RedHat/Fedora, etc) - thus actually making Linux as a whole stronger, ok we may have less choice but it is in a far better position with users spread over only a few distros (from a company wanting to develop drivers or software or even take notice) than users spread far more widely.
- kyrre, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Are you kidding 203 distros? Oh, You are talking about them number of distros based of Ubuntu.
- sworoc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Okay, sure, Novell didn't know for sure how the community would respond to their deal, but surely Xandros knew that the moment they signed this agreement, they would lose support from all the users, right? I mean, come on, what's the point of signing a deal like this if you're going to lose all your users (in this case, probably not too many of them). It's not like they can realistically move forward from this point because we've already seen people turn against Novell with what they've done, and they have much more mainstream products and significant contributions to the Linux community.
- sk545, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Heh, so what will happen when Ubuntu "teams up" with MS. Will digg.com melt?
- TheNameless88, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@sworoc
Isn't exactly identical to Novell's: http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20070604183519938
A funny update on that page, which answers questions about Xandros' marketshare:
"The Linux server software segment is dominated by Red Hat Inc. and Novell Inc.; Xandros' share of that worldwide market is so small that research group IDC doesn't track it. Xandros captured less than 1 percent of the desktop Linux operating system market in 2006, according to IDC, far behind big players like Red Flag Software Co., based in China, and Turbolinux Inc. in Japan." - javaroast, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@Freedomnight and generalalloy Read the article and not just the headline. Linus hasn't committed either way to GPL 3 yet and has said that he's moved to "I'm skeptical" from "Hell no." and:
"The current draft makes me think it's at least a possibility in theory, but whether it's practical and worth it is a totally different thing," he said. "Practically speaking, it would involve a lot of work to make sure everything relevant is GPLv3-compatible even if we decided that the GPL 3 is OK."
He didn't say he was satisfied, he didn't say he would use it... all he said is that it's better than the horror the original drafts were. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6@bryan

read it, its been on front page a few months back. - dukeinlondon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Bah, MS is trying to name the winners in commercial linux land. They can't kill it so they might as well control it and give to a few cooperative and compliant players their 'seal of approval'.
Don't know that corporate Linux adopters care about MS approval but then again, that might just increase their influence..... - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4This is Marketing Stunt.
Every time Microsoft will be reminded about Linuxes strength by their costumers, they point to these deals.
Just to make their costumer think that Linux may become a legal ability.
/obvious.
Linux needs to have a reply to the "Windows helps to have lower TCO in comparison to Linux." advertisement. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1 I do wonder what is going on behind closed doors that we will never be privy to that is encouraging this trend....I'm in agreement that the powers that be @ Xandros have to know their user base is not going to appreciate this.
And the reality is that if Ubuntu does do the deed, than all the distros based on Ubuntu will be caught like fish in a net.
This will include Mint,Freespire/Linspire,MEPIS,etc.
This does not paint a happy picture, unless we Linux folk are being too paranoid..
And I doubt that.
- neutrinodust, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1There goes the neighborhood.
- cantormath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Here is some more FUD
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,132662-c,companynews/article.html
LG is scared.......... - Philluminati, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3If I was working on an open source project, I sure as hell wouldn't except any help from Microsoft. Not even an ex-employee who is contributing for free in his spare time. Patent contamination could get us both sued by the big MS.
I'd rather just stay clear of the whole company. - racerpup, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I have used Xandros for a while now and still have it on my secondary computer. I have PCLinuxOS on my main computer right now. Xandros may be behind with software updates but it is so stable. I will actually miss it. This MS deal sucks and now I find myself trying to figure out where to go from here. I hate ubuntu, Suse and freespire are now MS lackies too. Maybe I should give up linux all together and go with BSD. PC-BSD and desktop BSD are starting to look pretty good right now.
