Had the mainstream audience adopted open-source software years ago, the situation could have been different. However, because of the geeky nature of the word itself, "open-source" programs (and movement ofcourse) just aren't that popular YET. I see a change but based on the people closest to me (family, friends, ...) the change isn't fast enough. Open-source can and WILL be much bigger in the future, Microsoft just has to embrace that and I hope Steve Balmer as the new CEO is aware of this ... developers, developers, developers ... open-source developers?
