- cmister, on 10/12/2007, -4/+71From Dan Lyons at Forbes "Microsoft have now announced that they are dropping Vista all together and they plan to just distribute Suse Linux from November 30. Steve Ballmer said, "Man that Vista sucked, I always said we should be a free software company but Bill just kept throwing chairs at me".
- joelito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37Someone has to say it.
It's a trap!!!!!!!! - TGMD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34you're kidding right? How is this bad?
Since Novell Suse got:
1. Compiz
2. Better package support
3. Better business support
4. People actually actively working on it with new Technologies
oh and:
5. They got the biggest software vendor and standard setter (sucks to admit that though) to acknowledge them and to actively work with them instead of against them..
How is any of that bad? - baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26very interesting, considering Microsoft's track record with business partners...
- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Let's see... pigs are flying.. hell is freezing over... pi is exactly 3...

- waterdrop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19This is a smart move for Microsoft. It may slightly improve their reputation. And will also let them license a dual boot utility to Dell and HP (and the smaller guys too). MS has to compete with Apple's Bootcamp which is the main reason for all the Mac switchers now. So MS is creating their own dual boot utility except with Linux and Vista instead of OS X and Windows. This will allow MS to basically win either way. Very smart move, as windows is apart of both competing platforms.
- Phantom784, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Is an office sweet a new type of candy?
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17In other news:
The Phantom Game Console, Duke Nukem Forever, Debian Sarge, PowerTab 2.0, and the Optimus keyboard were released today - rubberpants, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14There must be some portions of the deal we're not being told about. On the surface it doesn't look like there's any benefit to Microsoft. Remember, Microsoft doesn't do anything that won't strengthen Windows desktop dominance.
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Maybe they want to actually build Vista + 1 off a the Linux kernel. That would be quite interesting...
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Sorry I couldn't read your comment, my Linux just blue screened
- cloakeddagger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13i don't get it though... whats in this for microsoft...?
- OmegaNine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Maybe heading off an Anti Trust law suite before it starts?
- waterdrop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11What the does Novell and Microsoft have to do with Ubuntu?
- waterdrop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Don't be suprised to see MS pushing Pre-built OEM PC makers (Dell, HP, Gateway, etc.) to eventually start selling PCs with easy use pre-installed dual boot Novell SuSE and MS Vista.
Apple has OS X and Windows dual boot compatibility with Boot camp. MS will launch a easy dual boot utility to go head to head with boot camp. Except MS's version will dual boot Novell SuSE linux and Vista instead of OS X and windows. Sounds like the OS war just turned into the dual boot OS war. MS doesn't loose either way, because Windows is part of both. - Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11The flying toasters! All hail Berkeley!
- dcperspective, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11What the ......
This should indeed be interesting. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9My long-term prediction is that MS will eventually create their own version of Linux (eg RedHat) and sell it. The overall goal is to keep the masses buying MS Office, imo.
- doodlebumm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8If I'm not mistaken, there hasn't been a close software partner of Microsoft that survived for any long period of time. Don't they tend to screw their partners until their guts spill all over the floor? I know Novell is in some trouble, but *Microsoft*??? Wow!!!
- Meatshield, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Now my thing is (besides agreeing that Hell hath frozen over) does this mean that Microsoft could start making applications for SUSE and vice versa? It could be a boon for Linux in general to have some programs from Microsoft ported over. It could make 3rd parties want to put out Linux versions of their products if they knew a sizable share of the computer-using population wanted it.
- buzzedlightyear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8email we got at work (we use novell)
Dear Valued Customer,
We have some exciting new developments in our Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise story, and we'd like you to be the first to hear about it. Please join us on Thursday, 2 Nov., at 5:00 PM Eastern Standard Time, for a special CEO-Update Webcast at http://www.novell.com/webcast
Mark your calendars - you won't want to miss this!

Still no webcast, allmost 15 minutes late... - Waterrat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8 Perhaps Microsoft feels keep your friends close and your enemies closer...
And I too have this urge to yell:"It's s trap! Grab Tux and RUN!" - JDoggqx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@sundancekid
We are Windows Genuine Advantage. Lower your firewall and surrender your distro. We will add your secure and stabile source code to our own. Your kernel will adapt to service ours.
Resistance is futile. - SanTe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"Wishful thinking though it is... I would LOVE to see the next incarnation of Windows after Vista be built on a Linux Kernel."
I think this is a real possibility. What better way to compete with Linux than to co-opt its strongest feature: a secure, stable, flexible, robust kernel that is developed for free by thousands of volunteer programmers? And what better way to respond to Apple, for that matter? OS X has essentially the same benefits I believe (maybe not to the extent Linux does).
I can think of no other way for Microsoft to better cut development costs for Windows. It would allow them to re-purpose their best developers for API work, which is where Microsoft's strength lies. Ditch the bloated, buggy, ancient NT kernel for something better, because Microsoft's real market power comes from APIs and compatibility at the application level with earlier versions of Windows itself and their huge ecosystem of Win32 apps. - rmccs0x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Micro$oft buys Linux."
Microsoft didn't buy Linux. They are finally opening the door to work with the Linux community. - ziegm1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6As long as we are gettting the security of Linux with the Windows Apps then fine. Otherwise, God help us all...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10HOLY CRAP.
Wishful thinking though it is... I would LOVE to see the next incarnation of Windows after Vista be built on a Linux Kernel. - George3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I just heard on CNBC that Steve Ballmer's making an "Industry Announcement" today at 5PM EST / 2 PST - this could be big!

A licensing change.
OK, here's the theories I'm going with:
1. Either Bill or Steve just had a doctor diagnose them with something final, has six months to live, now trying to earn his way to Heaven at the last minute, possibly after a dream about the Ghost of Technology Companies Past.
2. It's all pure smoke, none of it's true, just trying to generate buzz.
3. They resurrected Machiavelli himself to hatch a series of evil plots which no mere ensouled mortal could unravel.
4. They just got a look at the people saying they won't upgrade and they're desperate as an 80-year-old virgin on New Year' Eve. They're gonna follow IBM's trail. - info, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6s/Dan Lyons at Forbes/Laura DiDio of Yankee Group/

Well, let's just say we've had worse understandings about Linux! :-)
Ubuntu and SUSE are two different distributions of Linux. Here's a jillion more:
http://distrowatch.com/
THE place to get all your Linux questions answered:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/
My own site, devoted to Free and Open Source Software, namely Linux:
http://penguinpetes.com/index.php
There's my welcome-to-the-FOSS-neighborhood packet. To your concern: Suse, Ubuntu, and any other Linux distro is already licensed under the General Public License. Hence, it belongs to you, me, and Bill Gates already. They could no more "buy out" Linux than they could buy the English language. They could, as Red Hat and Xandros do, charge money for their brand of Linux plus enterprise support - but the source code for the software is already on a hundred million hard drives in the user community, as free as rain.
Deep breath, relax.... - Drizzit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is clearly aimed to finish Red Hat off.
If RedHat goes down I bet Mark Shuttleworth will have some new customers. - Darkhacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm surprised no one said anything about Mono. Now that Microsoft is joining up with Novell, I think we can see some amazing progress on the Mono Project. Also, Microsoft announced that it would not go after OSS projects that are noncommercial in terms of patents. This is very good news!
- int19h, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Here's my summary of the press-conference:
- Customers want to run both Linux and Windows
- Customers doesn't want to be sued for patent infringement, so Novell and Microsoft made a peace-agreement so that customers can buy and use a combination of Windows and Suse Linux without any fear of that
- Customers want a smoother way to mix Linux and Windows, so Novell and Microsoft will work together on improving the integration of the two. This includes includes good cross-virtualization and better interoperability between MS Office and Open Office. - rmccs0x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6during the QA:
OSS guy: Mr. Balmer, do you feel like a dumbass? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yah, 141,000 according to Linux counter:
http://counter.li.org/
and that's *just* the people who stumble upon the site and register.
Outside of that, yes, I too am comatose with shock. You mean all the Windows fanboys are going to be my friend now? Who's going to mod me down minus 50 and call me a terrorist-sympathizer communist who wants to drive all software developers to the welfare line now?
Next thing you know, I won't have to live a lie with my ISP who "doesn't support Linux". And I suppose I'll see commercial games on the aisle at CompUSA for my Linux boxes, now. If that happens, I'll try not to scrape my nose on the cieling. - martingz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Trust, but verify.
...Ronald Reagan - Hungryhaney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Buy out Linus? What would they be buying? AFAIK he owns the naming rights, but the code, my friend is GPL!
And I highly doubt Linus would just sell out that way. - ratbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sounds like they will be working on interoperability between MS Office and OpenOffice formats as well.
- goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8 What are you talking about? The windows bootloader sucks, and is basically only designed to do one thing. Boot the windows kernel. A lot. Sometimes up to twenty times a day, depending on how often you're forced to reboot. :)
Grub is a good bootloader. - Shadowman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop is very impressive. Maybe Microsoft is a little worried. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
