http://digg.com/linux_unix/Microsoft_denies_paying ... - bxblox, on 11/14/2008, -2/+6In other news, Microsoft also denies goat rape and sun worship.
- Kingoftherings, on 11/14/2008, -1/+4It's been proven that most Linux Kernel developers are paid. Mostly by companies like Red Hat, Novell and Google.
- mrlunix, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3This article was submitted first before that one. Unfortunately, that one just hit the front page first.
- Garofoli, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3Thank god! I can only imagine what that could have done to Linux. Bill Gates a man who's net worth is over 100 billion dollars versus, for the most part, unpaid software developers/coders. Who'd win?
- inactive, on 11/14/2008, -1/+3Pics or it didn't happen?
- twmulloy, on 11/14/2008, -1/+3here we go again.

- geekdw, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1which distro is your favorite mrlunix?
- LongShlong, on 11/14/2008, -1/+2Goat rape and Sun Worship are great at the same time.
- smotpoker, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1Proven, eh? I would like to see this proof. I saw a pretty recent google talk that stated, IIRC, the largest % of kernel contributions are from anonymous donors and individuals in their spare time.
Google only contributes like 1% of code to the kernel. Redhat, Novell and IBM are the biggest names who contribute the most, but they are still not quite a majority and are fairly new contributors.
Also for the record, he mentioned software developers too, and there are way developers who contribute a lot to Linux that are no way related to kernel development. By and large they are unpaid by any company for their work, though many do receive donations and a fair amount manage to create their own start ups or receive corporate sponsorship to some degree as a direct result of their volunteer efforts. - MarzipanBabies, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1Did you really just censor yourself, or were you just trying to curse in wingdings?
- Tenetri, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1i dugg you up, cause that was HILARIOUS
- frazw, on 11/14/2008, -1/+2Microsoft can no longer lay claim to familiarity. Vista was as different from XP as XP is to e.g. KDE.
When my Dad got Vista I had to re-learn my way around. There was little familiarity. Many simple things went from 2 clicks away to 3, 4 or more. - smotpoker, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1Here we go... http://www.linuxfoundation.org/publications/images ... and http://www.linuxfoundation.org/publications/linuxk ...
Note that the table is based on number of *changes* to the kernel tree, which is not necessarily the same as real contributions. For instance often hardware support can be implemented for a specific device simply by adding a line or two to an existing driver and some are just minor/superficial modifications (formatting, etc). In the aforementioned google talk, he jokes about how one contributor had only made spelling corrections to the code for a year or more. If you are interested in the presentation:

Too many people are OS-partisan to the point they refuse to consider reason. It is like the U.S. two-party system but with only one party. Everyone assumes the "winning" party must be the best one and blindly support it, mostly out of spite I suspect, regardless of how it deteriorates matters or impacts others.
Partisanship...brand loyalty... whatever it is, it seems to be one of the worst traits humanity possesses. Far too often "loyalty" mandates forgoing principle and objectivity until everything around deteriorates to the point of collapse and everyone suffers needlessly. - chungos, on 11/14/2008, -0/+0duh. The sales dude that got a million in commission that year paid it.
- defaultaccount, on 12/03/2008, -0/+0my apologies, I was trying to make a joke; sorry to all of you who found this comment offensive.
- frazw, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1Bill Gates? Have you been in a coma?
- inactive, on 11/14/2008, -3/+3...just logged in to bury this. Its already been on FP today.
- Garofoli, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1I just realized that I wrote that. Forgive me.
- DuMbGuM, on 11/14/2008, -2/+1Bribes.. mmm
- defaultaccount, on 12/03/2008, -2/+1Who here gives a &^*% about Nigeria?
- dr3minem, on 11/14/2008, -2/+1Wow, this caught me staring at it for like 10 seconds cuz i thought i stopped time for 4 hours.
Wasn't this posted already? - mrlunix, on 11/13/2008, -3/+2LOL!
- kingatrock, on 11/14/2008, -5/+1Microsoft denies ALLEGED $400,000 anti-Linux bribe. When people read these opinionated biased headlines we don't bother reading the article or getting you your precious ad click since its already as polarized as possible, theres no room for any actual news.
I wonder if mrlunix would have any problems with the digg submission: "mrlunix denies eating babies and shoving giant black dildos up his ass, but we all know it's true."
hmm.. not bad I should post stories on digg! - KeithA45, on 11/14/2008, -10/+5the monopoly begins to unfold...
