Microsoft Missing Out on Netbook Growth as Linux Wins Sales

bloomberg.com — Still, Windows may remain a tough sell for PC makers trying to produce the cheapest machines possible. Equipping Linux on a computer costs about $5, compared with $40 to $50 for XP and about $100 for Vista, according to estimates by Jenny Lai, a Taipei-based analyst at CLSA Ltd.

Also as long as Asus is racing to the bottom of the price ranges there will be no room for paid software in the cheapest few devices. Remeber that it is likely that we will be buying $70 laptops in a few years.... where is the room for a windows license in that?
