A lot of the 'important' open source software is written by people on the payroll of multinational corporations and multimillion pound tech companies, the idea that it is all done for free is a total myth. And as the article says, consultancy is a well paid profession. - ocean17, on 11/04/2009, -6/+49It's a fair point, but something about the phrase 'Microsoft Linux' just makes me shiver
- drsjlazar, on 11/04/2009, -4/+31he means this? http://www.mslinux.org/
- ohreilly, on 11/05/2009, -4/+30Don't worry - you're paying more for OSX when you buy the latest shiny overpriced crap from Apple.
MS, who doesn't force you to use their software on a PC that they built, have to make their money from selling just the software. - JohnnySoftware, on 11/05/2009, -10/+35I have been saying they should do this for half a decade.
They would get a nicer core to their OS. They could ditch their disproved security model and give up modding it into one that works. Go look at the number and size of the current botnets, worms, and virus infections that are spreading.
Other operating systems have a Unix or Unix-like core now. Apple and Linux have proven that Unix-like operating systems can work out fine in the home and the office - and schools & labs too.
Windows and the original Mac OS X were designed decades ago. It was a different time. They both had some goofy stuff in them. Windows still has a lot of the thinking from that era. Apple stripped the last of their 1980's and 1990's era original Mac OS code out years ago.
No commercial company or open source company has been able to wrest control of Windows PCs from malware authors and get it back firmly in the hands of users. Better to drastically change the platform than let malware crooks dramatically change its population. - eqisow, on 11/05/2009, -2/+25Sorry, you're thinking of Apple.
- christianw, on 11/05/2009, -13/+34Whats funny about this is that windows 7 had more volunteer beta testers than linux has users.

- snipe123, on 11/04/2009, -4/+22The ex employee looked a little angry by saying that if microsoft would open the source of windows nobody would use it(he probably made some of it ).
Having touble finding the idea of microsoft linux interesting, Windows is making money, why would they want to stop? - 4321234, on 11/05/2009, -1/+18What would be interesting is knowing how many windows7 beta testers were also linux users.
- zer0mass, on 11/05/2009, -0/+15I still find it impossible to know how many Linux users there are. no matter how your try to track it there is simply no way to know for sure.
- datdamonfoo, on 11/05/2009, -20/+342009 is the year of Linux!
No wait...2010!
No..definitely 2011! - inactive, on 11/05/2009, -16/+28Linux domination? If anyone with a functioning brain kept reading after that, I feel sorry for you.
The title of this is simply...Disgruntled ex-Microsoft employee loses his mind. - eqisow, on 11/05/2009, -2/+13original Mac OS*
X is a version designation (you know... 10)
Oh, and *nix is older than both Windows and Mac OS. - Jaiotu, on 11/05/2009, -3/+14No way! I have a Linux Journal article that positively says that 1997 is the year of the Linux desktop!
- inactive, on 11/05/2009, -18/+28My PC is not in the hands of malware authros. Nor are hunderds of millions of users' PCs.
Far more people use Windows without ANY problems every single day than have ever used Linux in their entire lives. (Or ever will) - legend1222, on 11/05/2009, -0/+10Whats funny about this is that all Windows users are Linux users and don't realize it. They go on claiming they don't need Linux when 50% + of their computer life revolves around it.
- fuzzynyanko, on 11/05/2009, -0/+10Microsoft did do Xenix at one point
- Dregganaut, on 11/05/2009, -4/+13Why would microsoft want to port their driver architecture and development frameworks over to linux? That's like a free gift to their competitors.
- Langford, on 11/05/2009, -6/+15They don't have to literally make a Linux distro, but there could be a bit of a potential advantage to establishing layers that could be developed as separate projects the way Linux does. Consider back when Windows lived over DOS; There were drawbacks, but DOS could be updated without altering the GUI, and that has to make the overall project smaller. Imagine if the newer Windows7 kernel could have been bolted in underneath XP's existing interface, it would have saved them money and development time, as well as pushing upgrades to otherwise reluctant consumers. They already have IE and Media Player and other things as separate projects apart from the OS, they just need to add all the little things like notepad and mspaint to the list. Another layer of separation would let all the bundles of software be interchangeable and updated form a repository, similar to what Linux does, so that they wouldn't have to simultaneously make everything before a new release. In the end they could sell the base OS, and let everything else be fluid and updated across the internet.
- dutchguilder2, on 11/05/2009, -0/+8Google is an advertising agency that earns all of its revenue by selling ads. Why would Microsoft - a company that earns its revenue from selling software - learn from them?
- AngelBunny, on 11/05/2009, -0/+8That is what apple does ffs. OSX is unix for the most part.
- enantiodromia, on 11/05/2009, -2/+10can you explain why Apple should dump BSD for Linux?
for bonus points, try to make it sounds like you actually have a clue. - dutchguilder2, on 11/05/2009, -4/+12Next year is the year of Linux on the desktop!
- waydee, on 11/05/2009, -3/+11A lot of the 'fanboys' are exactly that, they weren't using Linux until it became just usable enough for the average idiot in the form of ubuntu.
The people who have been dicking with Linux since the mid 90s tend to keep quiet, the misinformed opinions of teenage ubuntu users are those fanboys you talk about. - KibibyteBrain, on 11/05/2009, -1/+8Not me. Having well implemented and architected Win32 support on Linux would be great for Linux users and developers whether they know it or not. Also, wouldn't you like to use something like Powershell with .net objects and WMI over a purely texted based shell where you have to unreliably attempt to parse the output of things to do anything useful and emit command lines in absurd manners to attempt to control APIs?
Microsoft has some great technology in areas typical Linux users would be interested in, its just there is so much stigma between the two crowds at this point that it seems neither side will give the other a fair evaluation. - iskin, on 11/05/2009, -1/+8I guess the people digging you down don't realize most of the internet runs on Linux. They also don't realize that many cellphones, digital video recorders, ATMs, cable boxes, bar video games, and many other electronic devices use Linux.
- waydee, on 11/05/2009, -0/+6Resurrect Xenix by buying out SCO.
- PainToad, on 11/05/2009, -2/+8OS X wasn't created "decades" ago, the first beta only came out in 2000, and was a completely new OS to 9/8/7/etc.
- spiralspirit, on 11/05/2009, -5/+11I tried ubuntu more than once. sadly the things I needed to get paid (CS4, Autocad, Cinema4d) just didn't run on it without playing around. heck, even researching and getting my nvidia video card drivers working properly took more time than installing windows, installing all of my programs, restoring my firefox backup, making a sandwich, and then taking a shower.
- spiralspirit, on 11/05/2009, -7/+13that would be true if in fact it had worked, but for some reason it didnt, and the driver did not install properly, and I had to edit other files, and do many mysterious things which I am not really qualified to do.
so ya, I tried it. and I went back to windows (xp at the time).
nyah - mrBitch, on 11/05/2009, -1/+6@ TrancePhreak, RE: " .. FailFox doesn't even run its plugins in a sandbox."
The only reason you need to have a web browser using a "sandbox" system is if that web browser is running on an OS that is inherently insecure.
Oops, you're right, all web browsers running under Windows NEED to have that sandbox feature, and need it bad... - JustinNoland, on 11/05/2009, -13/+18I've been using PC's for years and have not had a single virus infection to date. As an IT professional, I recognize that the most important deterrent to malware infections is safe browsing habits and discretion. Stupid people that click every pop-up on their casino game sites or porno sites, or who still download music off of Limewire, or who open attachments from email addresses they do not recognize often fall victim to infections. This is not the fault of Microsoft, its the fault of people who lack the knowledge and common sense required to operate a computer competently.
- fuzzynyanko, on 11/05/2009, -4/+9They can certainly do it, and Apple's model is a good one. They don't have to do it 100% *nix, but run on top of it.
The only problem is that their OS is incredibly dominant and they really do have some of the lead in areas of development. Do they really want to give that up? - Headinawheel, on 11/05/2009, -6/+11Really? You still feeling edgy and non-douchy by using $ instead of S?
- simbait, on 11/05/2009, -1/+6I would be very happy if Windows had a real Unix subsystem and not the pseudo-posix crap from NT. Yes .Net solves many problems with the Windows API but underlying it is still the WIN?? API. I found UNIX low level programming is much more natural (for me at least) than WIN32. I use Mac OSX as a desktop operating system is IMHO much better than Linux. However I don't want to be strangled by Apple Tax and a Windows X with a unix subsystem would be an great alternative.
- spiralspirit, on 11/05/2009, -18/+23windows 7 is pretty nice. I'm keeping it. No need to learn linux here.
- miaow, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4everyones using Netscape
- PinkyTheWinky, on 11/05/2009, -3/+7What's worng with KDE and gnome? KDE at least has always been ahead of Windows GUI. What makes the windows GUI so good and KDE and gnome so bad? Seriously....
- Dregganaut, on 11/05/2009, -2/+6who let this genius in here?
- seltaeb4, on 11/05/2009, -1/+5It was the "NextStep" OS, developed by Steve Jobs' Next Computer. I think it dates back to 1986-7.
- WernerCD, on 11/05/2009, -1/+5because obviously NO one stuck with, or went back to, XP after Vista was released in 2007... I mean... Vista was such a hit success when it came out. It *HAD* to be before 2007.
/s - Suricou, on 11/05/2009, -2/+5The windows 2k and later security model isn't too bad, really. The reason it fails is the need to maintain backwards compatability with old applications that like to do things like storing their documents under program files, or writing configuration to HKLM. This is why, on a standalone installation, the normal practice is to use the PC while an administrator. It would be easy for MS to make windows far, far more secure - but not without breaking an unacceptable amount of software.
- FordSVT1, on 11/05/2009, -5/+8Go learn Chinese! No? Keep on being ignorant!
Dumb-*****, why bother learning to deal with an OS that 99% of the population will never see let alone have to use? Linux is a choice and something IT professionals might have to learn, and that's _it_. - cantormath, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3DUH! we have been saying that for years!
- TnTBass, on 11/05/2009, -1/+4@newchap and JustinNolan
So what you guys are arguing is that people are too stupid, and as soon as they smarten up, the Windows world will have few, if any, viruses.
Do you know any idiots where you work? Have you been successful making them smarter?
I agree, everyone who knows what they are doing can avoid viruses and spyware. Not everyone knows what they are doing, nor will most of the people actually care. They want something that just works. - MikeEx, on 11/05/2009, -3/+6I wish I could right click an image and have an option to set as wallpaper.
But that is just to damn advanced for kde. - moliver21, on 11/05/2009, -1/+4Microsoft Linux would be to Canonical's Ubuntu, what Bing is to Google. There's no point for them even to try.
- eanbowman, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3LOL neckbeards.
I love how stereotypes rarely match the image of anyone I know from their supposed target group. - idontknowpizza, on 11/05/2009, -1/+4It's a good thing he's talking about Linux and not BSD or UNIX then.
